Maybe so...I suppose I was just surprised to see Bogart playing one though. In almost every movie I've seen him in he played the cynical man who still had a heart deep down. Here, he was just straight up evil. I came away cheering for the father who eventually got the upper hand and his acting really outshines Bogart's in this movie. And I've nothing against movies with truly evil villains, Richard Widmrk in Kiss of Death is one of my favorites but I guess I was just expecting more nuanced characters.
When the mother and father and kid were alone in the upstairs bedroom, couldn't they have tied a few sheets together and escaped out the window? They'd be able to run to a neighboring house and call the police in time before the daughter got home. Two of the men were downstairs, the third was in a separate upstairs bedroom.
Creep(2014) Surprised no ones mentioned this. It's dark but so funny, everyone I've gotten to watch this movie loved it.
I was just watching the episode "Ethels Birthday" from season 4 and Fred mentions he's been buying Ethel birthday presents for 26 years. So assuming she was 18 when they married that would make her 44. She could've been a year older or younger when she married but I have a feeling she married young and it just kinda makes sense because later in "Ethels Hometown" we discover she was quite popular with the boys, so if she had waited any longer she wouldve likely married one of her hometown sweethearts instead of Fred. My theory on how they met was he was a kind of war hero passing through Albuquerque and she was smitten with his veteran status, mature age, uniform, and the promise of whisking her away from her little town and into the Big City. She probably had aspirations like Lucy of making it big in show business and saw the potential for Fred to provide her the means to do just that.
I would love to find the time to read his autobiography some day, do you recommend it for those of us curious about all the goings on behind the scenes of ILL? Is it any good?
I was just about to ask this same question, happy I'm not the only one wondering. I can't help but notice the obvious age gap between Ethel and Fred whenever I watch ILL. I don't mind it really, but it makes you wonder in the back of your mind how that partnership happened(in the story). And it makes it so very hard to figure her age out, whether she's closer to Fred or Lucy or right smack in between.
I always figured Ethel was in her early 40s and Fred was in his early 50s, although he looks much older than that really and she looks younger than that but some people just age faster. Does it ever go into how Ethel and Fred met and married?
I remember in one of the documentaries I watched about Desi and Lucy that the studio execs were very against casting Desi as Lucy's husband because he wasn't white. But Lucy stuck to her guns and wouldn't accept anyone else. So as far as the studio it must've been pretty controversial but I'm not sure about the audience on the whole. Seems the show was an immediate hit though, so Lucy and Desi showed that it really couldn't have ever been anyone else but Desi. I truly can't imagine enjoying the show so much with a different casting choice.
Yes I'm really curious if their relationship was the first of its kind on TV, what with the husband and wife being from different ethnicities. It's hard for me to see them as interracial, though technically maybe they are? I just see Ricky as someone who speaks Spanish from a different country, but I have to admit I dont know much about Cuba's history or genetic makeup. One thing for sure though is it offers a lot of material for the show. It just wouldnt be the same without the slight language barrier. I always Crack up when Ricky gets so exasperated he starts ranting in Spanish, and Lucy jabs at his pronunciation of words like "experience" "expensive" and "dont".
I've been searching for a good documentary on Lucy and Desi online for a deep dive but haven't found much. Maybe I'll eventually find a good book that will give me better insight into their life and times.
Haha yes, my kids are definite fans now! At first I didn't remember the show that much and didn't know if my kids would get this kind of humor, especially since it's black and white and there's a lot of dated references but took a chance buying the first season and they were pretty soon begging me to show them more and laughing hysterically throughout. So I just ordered season 3!
Last winter we went through the whole Little House on the Prairie series and they loved that too. I'm so exhausted with the new stuff these days and honestly I pine for the "good ol' days" where things were more wholesome and less cynical.
Great to hear it only gets better after season 1! I'm used to series' going downhill after so many seasons or just getting milked to death when it should've ended a season or two before. Season 1 and 2 have a few episodes that i noticed were a little lackluster but we've still enjoyed every one of them. I just ordered the third season of ILL and looking forward to spending the rest of the cold, grey, Midwest winter with a new series to get us through.
