Agreed. There was a lack of energy in this film that was only alleviated (at times) by the nostalgia of seeing David Arquette, Courtney Cox and Neve Campbell in action. Without them, this felt like more of a direct-to-DVD sequel (or today's streaming equivalent).
?
Yes, there were brief moments where Raimi's style (and humour) would peek through, then the movie would snap back to the standard "MCU" aesthetic.
It felt like one of those films where a director is fired and replaced with another director to shoot extra scenes in post-production.
I saw that one last year, I never read the original book or saw the entire Disney classic. Therefore, I was shocked by the dark themes.
I can imagine!
I agree, I also disliked Part 2.
DC Animation had some success with it's adaptation of Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight' by splitting it into two films, but no luck here.
I agree that the film's dialogue should have been in Comanche and subtitled in English. Unfortunately, American audiences don't like reading subtitles, so having the dialogue spoken in English was most likely a business decision.
The dub isn't too bad, though.
I made it a few episodes into Season 2 before deciding not to continue - I couldn't get past the changes to the characters and story, plus the lack of budget for the special effects.
It's open to interpretation as to whether the creature immediately has to void all the inorganic matter once it finishes digesting the people (the hikers at the beginning of the film and later the people at Jupiter's ranch) it has eaten, or if it was marking its territory by defecating the lethal debris onto the creatures and houses in the valley.

My critique of 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness':
"I didn't enjoy this one, unfortunately. The VFX were ugly and overabundant, and the actors were clearly standing in front of green screens and emoting at tennis balls. Also, there was far too much expository dialogue and clumsily placed quips. I did enjoy some of the Sam Raimi-isms but they clashed with the Marvel formula for film-making that comprised most of this movie."
The critical assessments of 'Prey' on this board:
"Bet Predators turn homo on Earth. With the constant brainwashing WE have - in your face every 2mins."
"Looks woke as fuck... Skilled Female warrior my ass."
"A 120lb little girl up against a Predator! Yeah right. And she's a woman commanche warrior! FUCK OFF, she would have been bearing children and keeping the fucking teepee clean and tidy. More woke feminism shite. And another franchise that's been fucked over so many times since Predator II by those woke wankers in Hollywoke."
What about all the threads with defenders of the movie insulting anyone who dislikes it?
Where are these threads?
In regards to "censorship of free speech", the moderator(s?) of this board already police repeated profanity and spamming of topics. Yet they allow a film's designated discussion area to be clogged with "Bet Predators turn homo on Earth", "Lead actress is a half-blood" and endless variations of "More woke feminism shite", to the extent that the OP created this thread to vent about how overwhelming it was to slog through all the negativity (the majority of which has nothing to do with the technical aspects of the film).
Wikipedia: "By the consequence of his various battles, stated the Gentleman's Magazine, aided by great irregularity of living, he had reduced himself to a most pitiable situation for the last eighteen months, and came to suffer the effects of his lifestyle."
Wear-and-tear from fighting and alcohol abuse, in 19th century lingo.

He didn't have a cannon. He had a gun that shot large darts which would home-in on whatever his laser-targeting mask was pointed at.
Naru stole the Predator's mask and fled into the woods. When the Predator fell in the mud-filled bog pit, it moved into the path of it's own mask's laser sights, which Naru had set up as a trap. So when the Predator fired those darts at her, the darts missed, swung back around and hit it.
I think the praise of 'Prey' is over-the-top, but I agree that the discourse on Moviechat is dreadful (unless you are prepared to put dozens of people on ignore). To quote another person who replied here, "attention seeking posters work extra hard to drown out any nuanced discussion of movies, films, actors, etc".
Just from this thread alone:
"those that embrace woke, Leftist ideology feel they need to stand up for the film and support it because of its "girl power" feminist and anti-white male message."
"Well why come here then? You can always run into your the comfort of your echo chamber with censorship where admins will ban all non-woke stuff and you will live in happiness believing that everyone agrees with your woke nonsense."
"The more I see you whiny cunts bigging this movie up the less interesting it seems to me. Think I have decided to never watch it and tell everyone it's the worst in the franchise because female led action moves are tosh, just to piss you guys off."
I'm not sure whether the moderation team is understaffed or if they just let these types of posts dominate the message board because it means, on a base level, people are still engaging with the site. Some of these users should immediately be warned and then banned, not allowed to rack up hundreds and thousands of posts.
It is weird that the film would have brought back the cast from previous DCEU films (J.K. Simmons, Jurnee Smollett, etc.), but swapped Ben Affleck for Michael Keaton to play a much older Batman. Also, the plot sounds like a pilot episode for a series on The CW - Carmine Falcone is quickly approaching Joker territory as the most overused Batman villain.
If they didn't want to set it in the DCEU, I think this film - with a retired Batman, played by Michael Keaton, mentoring Barbara Gordon - may have worked better if it had been a sequel to 'Batman Returns' and existed in the continuity of those Tim Burton movies. I think it would have been fun to revisit Burton's aesthetic.
It's not dissimilar from the seven Academy Award nominations 'Black Panther' received and the people hailing Ryan Coogler as the next Steven Spielberg.
'Get Out' and 'Black Panther' were both groundbreaking in terms of representation, but somehow this became conflated with artistry by lazy film critics chasing clicks and Hollywood studios fishing for award kudos.
FYI, I also can't understand the praise for 'The Departed', particularly when you place that film next to 'Infernal Affairs'. Then again, some people like 'Gangs of New York'...
IMO, the majority of Disney+ series have been better as fan-edits ('Obi-Wan Kenobi', 'WandaVision', 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier', etc.) because they were originally based on film scripts and later retooled into a streaming series format.
Obi-Wan blames himself for Anakin turning into Vader and just can't bring himself to kill him, no matter how much damage Anakin does. Also, Anakin was the child of a prophecy, the one destined to destroy the Sith and bring Balance to the Force.
So you can either read it as weakness on Obi-Wan's part - he will beat the crap out of Vader but draw the line at executing him - or his devotion to believing in the Jedi prophecy - which Vader ultimately fulfills when he turns on Palpantine in 'Return of the Jedi'.
Apparently, Stuart Beattie (the writer whose film screenplay was used as the core of this streaming series) says his proposed film series would have explored Obi-Wan's rationale for sacrificing himself during his final battle with Vader.
what is the MCU even working towards??
Setting up a new generation of heroes, similar to the way Phase 1 had heroes being recruited into the Avengers Program by Nick Fury. Phase 4 has seen a team of anti-heroes being recruited by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and has also been introducing the Young Avengers.
Phase 4 has also expanded the universe by introducing the Eternals, Celestials, various gods and parallel dimensions.
Bear in mind that Phase 1 wasn't cohesive ... Odin has Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet in his trophy room in the first 'Thor' film, for example.
