BS story
The film is very, very loosely based on a true story. A lost opportunity, I'd say, given that Jem Belcher's life was indeed quite interesting, especially with it being very short. Even as a fairy tale, this film is not great - probably in the 5-6 out of 10 due to fast tracked story with poor editing. They should have given the film 2 hours and 30 minutes - with a better lead, story closer to life and better director.
Onto the film inaccuracies. In the film, Jim Belcher keeps his eye after an accident (BS) - and it doesn't get disclosed how he ends up dying at the age of 30 - on the contrary, this is a rather odd wishful tale with a happy ending. What could have been a forewarning for the youngsters - it ends up being an oddity full of BS and half-truths.
Speaking of which, even wikipedia omits the cause of his death, which is curious.
Revision of history via omission?
So, here is the true story, as opposed to the hollywood BS, for those interested.
