Just watched this recently for the first time, just one of greatest expression's of someone putting themselves out there warts and all. Bob Fosse didn't pull any punches and he delivered a fantastic piece of art. It has the same feeling of Fellini's 8 1/2. Must have been awkward for his wife Gwen Verdon and his daughter Nicole to see their husband and father just put all his flaws on the screen. To be fair he put's his wife (who he was split from for a long time they just didn't get divorce) into a good light, Gideon clealry trust's his ex's judgement and cares for her deeply as he does his daughter. What's funny is the Actress playing his alter ego's girlfriend Ann Reinking was actually one of Fosse's girlfriend's in real life, and he also later supposedly had a relationship with Jessica Lange too. As Reinking character says in the film "You can't help thanking them with you're dick" great line. Even the film he's editing in the film is obviously Lenny. It's got to be the bleakest musical ever, that's for sure. Love The scene with Nilsson's "Perfect day" playing as he goes to be bed with one of the dancers of the show. Also the ending with Everly Brother's "Bye Bye Love" is one of the greatest endings to a film ever, as Gideon says goodbye before he dies. I can't blame Stanley Kubrick saying he loved it. It's stunning stuff. Roy Schneider delivers his greatest performance he ever gave, how Hoffman beat him for it I never know. How in the hell did Robert Benton beat out Bob Fosse for best director. Oscars do get you annoyed with their decisions. It did win the Palm D'or though. No it was written for Transformer's cartoon film back in the 80's lol. I thought the same for years until I check up on YouTube and there it was. I don't know if you know this but the guy producing them in that scene was Sean Penn's brother who also wrote the music for the film, who was married Aimee Mann who wrote those wonderful songs for Magnolia. What a load of gibberish. He's still the best director in cinema today, so don't speak for everyone. There Will Be Blood is one of the greatest works of film you are likely to see. Crazy thing he's still got a lot more films that would be any other director masterwork. Punch Drunk Love one of the most original love stories, The Master and Inherent Vice fantastic pieces of work, Phantom Thread, a old school but still fresh film. Boogie Nights and Magnolia two of the best films of the 90's. Yeah he's sure losing that fanbase of his. no one wants to work for him and his critical stock has hit a such a low that Yealis must be right lol. That's the thing about Anderson films, you need to rewatch them and a lot of his work you don't get on the first go. The only ones I think you get on first go, well i did first time out were Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood. It took me a few watches to get The Master, and i love it now. Punch Drunk Love and Inherent Vice took me another watch and I loved them. Phantom Thread was the same. It's definitely there, do I get a pass lol. still think There Will be Blood is his greatest film and one of the greatest films ever made. But Boogie Night's is just amazing that Anderson was only 26 when he did that. Amazing. Still funniest thing I've seen in cinema is still after the botched robbery attempted. Both Wahlberg and C.Reilly run out of the house, then C. Reilly just jumps over a Bush. I don't know why but I laugh out loud at that scene. Doesn't the tape stop halfway during the song. Great song that. What about "The Touch" from Stan Bush. That studio stuff of Wahlberg and C.Reilly rocking out to that is fantastic. It's Thomas Anderson's first "Film", i mean in a sense you can't tell were his influences are coming from and it feel's new. I love Hard Eight, Boogie Nights and Magnolia a lot especially Boogie Nights. But you can tell it's influences are all over those films like Robert Altman and Martin Scorsese. The film's are stunning, especially the last two. Amazing he was still yet in his 30's when he made those three films. But with Punch-Drunk Love, he cemented his status for me as one of the greatest voices in cinema working today. It's such a unique romantic film, that you never seen it's like before. It feels like a film out of time. Adam Sandler delivers his best performance ever. Emily Watson hasn't been as lovely, this is the closet you see her to been Amelie type (which was wanted for first). Even Philip Seymour Hoffman in a small role, delivers one of his best performances. Must also be Anderson's shortest film at 1hr 35mins. That opening scene alone is so original. Also love the bit in supermarket when Barry is buying up all the jelly, in the distanc you a person in red following from other side of the aisle. It's obviously Lena, but you don't see it until after a few rewatches, just love those little touches. Definitely underrated film. A lot of great performances get ignored by the Oscars really. But this is definitely Baker Hall's best performance in a Thomas Anderson film. He's the heart and soul of the film.A man burdened by guilt trying to do something good but it just getting him into trouble. John C. Reilly is also excellent. There Will Be Blood, is still his masterpiece for me. Best film of the last 29 years imo. But Boogie Nights would be in my top 3 of his films along with Phantom Thread. The Soundtrack is fantastic. Can't listen to Rick Springfield's Jessie's Girl without thinking of Alfred Molina coked out of his mind dancing around a room lol. You should, no better American director in the 70's then Ashby. I'd avoid them Bill if i was you, I can't recommend any of them to be fair. They sadly show a true artist in decline. There is a reason why they are difficult to find cause they are terrible. This film is anything but too long and Boring. It's Anderson most Un-Anderson film in a way. It's obviously in thrall to Robert Altman and Martin Scorsese and nothing in the least wrong with that. It's definitely the best thing Burt Reynolds, Heather Graham and Mark Wahlberg have done acting wise imo, amazing to think Reynolds is so down on this film. Julianne Moore is probably the best thing in it. Great to see John C Reilly in a more serious role. Also the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman leaves his mark for later Anderson films. William H Macey, Don Cheadle, Philip Baker Hall, Thomas Jane and Luis Guzman round out the cast. It's a amazingly Confident film for a Director who was only 26 at the time. Tough one for Caine, he's been in a lot of great films with great performances but also been in a ton of dross. You have to fight through the dross to find the gems but they are there. This is my top 10 1. Get Carter (1971) 2. Alfie (1966) 3. Educating Rita (1983) 4. The Man Who would Be King (1975) 5. Hannah And Her Sisters (1986) 6. The Quiet American (2002) 7. Sleuth (1972) 8. Little Voice (1998) 9. The Cider House Rules (1999) 10. Zulu (1964) Honorable mentions: The Ipcress File (1965),The Italian Job (1969),The Last Valley (1971),Dressed To Kill (1980),Deathtrap (1982),Mona Lisa (1986),Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988),Noises Off.. (1992),The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992),Last Orders(2001),Children of Men (2006),Harry Brown (2009),Youth (2015) and Batman Trilogy. 1. The Dark Knight 10/10 2. Interstellar 10/10 3. Memento 10/10 4. The Prestige 10/10 5. Batman Begins 9/10 6. Dunkirk 9/10 7. Inception 9/10 8. The Dark Knight Rises 8/10 9. Insomnia 7/10 10. Following 6/10 He feels like a modern day David Lean, his film's feel like events and must be seen in the cinema. I don't think he's made a bad film, maybe his debut film Following is his weakest work and even that is a good solid film. He's a bit like Stanley Kubrick in the sense, people knock or are lukewarm on it's release then a few years later end up been hailed as classics. It's definitely aging well like a fine wine. It's flawed but it's got far more positives then negatives. Jonathan Rhys Meyers does make for a great Bowie Clone, i can see why Bowie declined for his songs to be used (not having them is a massive blow to the film, as he was the best thing in Glam) it clearly based on his life and it doesn't show him in the greatest light, been a user, abuser, flaky and worse of all a sell out. Ewan Mcgregor does a good Iggy, and steals the film. Toni Collette does a good Angie Bowie and she always delivers in her roles. Christian Bale isn't quite at his intense best but especially in Arthur's flashback scenes he really gives the role a ton of heart. The soundtrack is fantastic even without Bowie songs. I like the nods to Citizen Kane. I think it's one of Todd Haynes underrated films. Does have the feel of the whole SJW vibe to it been considered in this years awards show. It's not even close to been Marvel's best film and It wouldn't even crack my top 5. I thought Michael B Jordan was one of the better Villains in Marvel's canon. But I'm not really shocked they went for the film. I like DR No, but it's not a patch on Casino Royale for me. That for me is the best Bond film by a country distance. To say the characters, story and pacing is a lot better is a bit silly. Bond started to get some character with Craig films. He started to feel more human, and you started to feel for him more. I love Connery but you never felt his Bond was ever in any danger. You feel Craig pain in that Torture scene in CR. I rate some of the old Bond films but thank god for Craig and his films. The franchise needed a kick up the ass. 1. Skyfall 2. Casino Royale 3. QOS 4. Spectre The first two are Bond Classic's for me, tough one to chose between both. Both are My two top Bond films of all time too. Craig is excellent in the films. QOS is massively underrated imo, I like how brutal it is and downbeat. I like that the Bond Girl is a deeply troubled woman and doesn't jump into bed with Bond. She's able to handle herself as well. Spectre, I liked it but just something was missing for me. Craig was great, Lea Seydoux just feels weak compared to Craig's other Bond girls. Batista was a great villain. Christoph Waltz not so much. The Last battle was pretty weak imo as well. Two classics. One underrated misunderstood Bond film. And a meh one. Craig deserves to go out with a classic Bond film. He put much saved Bond and made him cool again. Thanks to him bigger directors and named actors are coming aboard the films. She's got the cute girl next door bring her home to meet mom look. She won't be troubling any most beautiful women lists. I think she's a attractive, but in the long run she be the type that grows old gracefully and probably as she get's older will look more beautiful.
