You have to remember they were underplaying her beauty as her character wasn't supposed to be blow away beautiful. She was supposed to be more girl next door. But I though Adams was beautiful in this and it's probably one of her more underrated performances.
I think Hill isn't as strong a film as Four Weddings, I don't think the side characters are as memorable as the ones from Four Weddings, besides Rhys Ifan's Spike. But what it has over Weddings is that central romance is far stronger, I totally buy Robert's character is in love with Grant's character. I just never got it with Carrie (MacDowell) that she truly loved Charles at all throughout the film, she was rather dismissive and a bit of a user.
I would have love Weddings more if by the third act we find out that Fiona is in love with Charles and that Charles didn't dismiss it and that he got with Fiona in the end. It's successful comedy and drama but it fails at it's rom com which was it's most important part. One of the reason's About Time is my favorite Curtis film, I buy the rom com and but also it succeeds with the father and son relationship as well.
Weddings wins for me as the side characters are all likable and fleshed out, it's comedy is all hit for me and it also isn't afraid to break the heart of it's audience either. It's a film that flows a lot better. You can see why it became such a worldwide hit. But Carrie didn't work as "Mysterious", I still to do this day don't cheer on Charles getting with her. She just gets totally overshadowed by Fiona. I wonder today if Curtis would have done things differently with Carrie as a character.
She's not a great actress, but she's not a awful one either. She did amazingly well to drag out her career as a name actress as long as she did. She has good performances in her career, like Interview with A Vampire, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, The Virgin Suicides, Mona Lisa Smiles, Drop Dead Gorgeous and Melancholia. She was excellent in season 2 of Fargo for me. She was a decent Mary Jane in the Spiderman franchise. In recent years she's slipped from main actress to supporting actress which I think suits her a lot better imo.
Banks is still a good looking woman. I think they got Stewart about 5 years too late, she's going through this tomboy Lesbian period and just doesn't do it for me. She was once a beauty. Agree that Naomi Scott is a beauty, Ellie Balinska is a attractive woman. Smart casting, Scott is coming off Aladdin, Stewart still has a fanbase and can still make headlines and Balinska is a newcomer without any hype around her.
I
Purple Noon is well worth a watch but it does hold by from the gay undertone of the 1999 version.
I love Anthony Minghella version, Jude Law has never been better, he plays a right slimy user in this. Always great to see early Cate Blanchett, in a small role but she's excellent in it. The late Philip Seymour Hoffman almost steals the film as Dickie's posh scummy friend Freddie. Even Gwyneth Paltrow is solid in this. But for me Matt Damon is fantastic in this, sure he's no beauty like a young Alain Delon but he's still males you feel for Ripley even though he's a cold blooded murder and user.
Some fantastic Cinematography and some fantastic locations, and just a more downbeat feel to it. It's better then it's 7.4 on Imdb for me. Also I think this a better film then The English Patient.
Is she the "It" girl right now. I'm not a fan of her as a person, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. She's definitely splits opinion and I hear that it's the same on set with fellow actors. But she's got some great stuff on her C.V. She was great in Room. Also very good in Short Term 12, and has had a major hit with Captain Marvel. Her directing debut Unicorn Store doesn't seem to have gone over well with most and I'm sure that's people wanting to take her a step down from her arrogant behavior during Captain Marvel press tour. I liked her in stuff like 21 Jump Street, Don Jon, Scott Pilgrim and Free Fire (I don't think she would have done that film if Room had come out beforehand).
I think she's on shaky ground but cause of Captain Marvel and Avengers success, she get away with this time.
Just a simple case of someone who chose having a family over her career, and that shouldn't be looked down upon. Probably more career focused actresses would have held off having kids and getting married and just focus on at least getting themselves into a top position in the acting industry that taking a year or two out to have children wouldn't have effect them.
She's been out for years even before her break through with Once Upon a Time. I remember her in Mona Lisa Smile, A Single Man and as Johnny Cash's 1st wife in Walk The Line. She did a few romance films that didn't do much. She voiced the lead character in Zootopia. She seems to have got back into TV (Big love is another good show she did) and probably at this point is her best place to make a mark. Her time of wanting to be a major film actress is long gone sadly.
Even before she went away, she was slowly slipping into supporting roles as the likes of Emma Stone were taking the lead roles that Amanda would have probably gotten the year or two before. Stuff like Easy A and The musical version of Hairspray.
I think even if she did not have addiction and health problems, I think she probably be a supporting actress to this day.
Good luck to her, even though no sign of any work on her IMDB so far.
I would go 50/50 on it to be fair Thalia, She was probably never out and out attractive but I think for a while around Mean Girls era, she was a good looking woman. More girl next door which suited her, before she went all crazy with the make up and dying her hair and trying to act like she was hotter then she really was. There I agree she was fugly
For me 2004 was her at her hottest, and probably the clip that shows that best would be her hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. She did a skit parodying Harry Potter, and she played Hermione. The Joke was she had a big spurt happen over the summer on her chest, and they had a ton of sexual innuedos. But that clip has over 53 million views on YouTube, and I'm sure it's not just down to Harry Potter fans. Lindsay was smoking hot in that clip, and I think that was peak of her been somewhat good looking.
2006 was the last time she really left a mark with her films, she would have been only 20 at the time. The only films since she's done that are remembered for something would be I know who Killed Me just for how bad it is and The Canyons, cause she gets naked in it. Besides that her career is not totally finished but her career as a top actress and star are long gone, she got a part in a TV show for Netflix called Sick Note and has done some cheap ass horror. I think it be a ton of b-movies where most will be horrors, she probably get naked if the price is right in them.
I definitely do think it's pretty much down to someone who wasn't able to handle the spot she was in, she was probably was spoiled by the early fame and wasn't told No a lot as a kid. Throw in drink and drugs, sleeping about with a ton of men , taken her fame and what talent she had for granted and just been a pain in the ass.
As you know already he wasn't in Lost, but I agree his performances in Lion, Slumdog Millionare and The Man who Knew Infinity and Hotel Mumbai show a very good talent. I just think he forever be one of those actors we be saying needs to be used more when he's in his 40's, I just don't think he ever be a leading man in Hollywood. But I do see him probably getting a main role in a top TV show and maybe becoming a in demand character actor.
I think Leo Di Capiro and Joel Edgerton were cast perfectly for their roles. I always thought Elizabeth Debicki never looked as stunning as she did in this. Isla Fisher was perfectly cast in a small role.
I'm a big fan of her's but I'm still on the fence if I think Carey Mulligan was miscast, It's a shame someone like Margot Robbie wasn't a star name by this time (she and Leo had great chemistry in Wolf of Wall Street), I think she would have been excellent. I like Toby as Nick Carraway but someone like a Jake Gyllenhaal would have probably done a better Job.
If I was doing a remake today I'd probably cast
Robert Pattinson as Gatsby
Andrew Garfield or Paul Dano as Carraway
Adam Driver as Tom Buchanan
Margot Robbie as Daisy
I thought Nick was the only person from the group they mingled with that actually cared about Gatsby and not his fame or fortune. You could look at it been some attraction there, but i just think Nick just wanted to be a good friend to Gatsby as Gatsby was a sad lonely young man.
I won't knock you for not liking the film. It's not for everyone really, it wasn't a film made to please the masses to be fair. Just going by it's rating on IMDB would tell you that. But I think it's a film that should be somewhere in the 8's on IMDB.
Doesn't she only show her breasts in the film, I haven't seen the film in ages. I always thought Scarlett was a tad overrated in the looks apartment. But as I said I admire her for getting naked for the first time on film in such a non commercial film she's ever done.
No problem thanks for reading it :).
What happened to Rourke. I just don't think acting was the be all and end all for him, a bit like Marlon Brando in a way.
If he had the drive of a De Niro or Pacino, or was probably a bit more picky like a Day Lewis. He could have been a contender.. But for a while he was the best thing in American acting scene, Heavens Gate, Body Heat, Diner, Eureka, Rumble Fish, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Year of the Dragon, 9 1/2 Weeks, Angel Heart, Barfly and Johnny Handsome.
He Lost his way in the 90's, with his boxing career and plastic surgery. He did a lot of films below his talent but had moments when he shone Buffalo 66, Animal Factory, The Pledge, Spun, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Man on Fire, Sin City and The Wrestler.
I Always thought he was a troubled soul (he had a pretty tough and abusive upbringing) and he was born with a gift that he just didn't really was fully in love with. Shame really.
I'm a big fan of the director Jonathan Glazer, he's made three great films in Sexy Beast, Birth and Under The Skin. A Special talent.
This film blew my mind when I first saw it, just so eerie and disturbing (the child on the beach screaming for it's father, stays with you and the black room is still a freaky image), the soundtrack is one of the best of the last few years, and the thing with Scarlett been naked, she could have done that for a film that would have offered her more money to get her tits out but she decides to do it for a film that won't garner a massive audience and will slip by without much notice. And it did, I think many besides yourself have forgotten she got naked in this. I'm more surprised not no one noticed her while she chatted up guys and walked around Scottish Mall without much fuss.
She's done stuff that I haven't personal enjoyed, The Vow, Aloha, The Hot Chick, Everything Will Be Fine or have wasted her in sub par roles, Southpaw, Doctor Stranger and Sherlock Holmes films.
But overall I think when she's on form and has a meaty role to bite into, she's a pretty damn good actress. I like that she doesn't always chose the easy roles that will bring her box office success things like Disobedience, A Most Wanted Man, Passion, To The Wonder, The Lucky Ones, Everything Will Be Fine. She does do the odd romantic film and commercial films that aren't my cup of tea, like The Vow, Morning Glory, Mean Girls, Wedding Crashers, The Time Traveller's Wife and The Notebook but I'm sure those film's are what most on here are fan's of her through.
My favorite roles and films, I think her best performance is in Spotlight, it's not a showy performance but delivers one with a lot of heart.
I think About Time, even though she takes a backseat for a lot of the time. I think it's the best film out of her romantic roles and she's at her most lovable in this, and you understand why Domhnall Gleeson's character turns down Margot Robbie's character and goes to all the trouble he does to be with Mcadam's character. It's a wonderful underplayed role and at that time she was a big name and to take a backseat like that shows she's all about what makes the film better rather then her own ego.
I loved her in Game Night, she can do comedy pretty damn well. I thought she was the best thing in Disobedience. Red Eye was a guilty pleasure of mine. Midnight to Paris, great to see her play a bit of a bitch. I loved A Most Wanted Man, her performance is a bit of a dry run for the one in Spotlight and it's a underrated film.
I disagree that the rest of the cast of Stranger things are experiencing massive success, Hell Boy was a massive critical and commerical flop for Harbour. Millie Bobby Brown with Godzilla film did bad business then expected at the box office. I give you Wolfhard as IT was a massive hit and he was great in it.
I think Ryder has done great, her turn in Stranger Things has put her back on the map. She's at that age for a actress it's tough to make a serious comeback. I don't think it's all down to what she did in 2001 that screwed her career up, she made chose some not so great movie roles and was simply passed by for younger actresses. She's done solid work during that time like A Scanner Darkly, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, Black Swan and The Iceman. Also a great TV turn in Show Me a Hero.
I don't think it's any Hollywood ruined Ryder cause she stole clothes back in 2001. I just think her golden touch that got her through the 80's and 90's and made her a big star just left her like it does many actresses.
There was always a lifespan on her non porn acting career, she wasn't never a great actress and did well to drag it out as long as she did. The last thing she did was in 2018, for a Hulu horror show called Into The Dark, in a small part. Her last lead role in a film was Open Windows with Elijah Wood back in 2014. The best thing The Girlfriend Experience did for her was get her out of the porn Industry and give her a decent b-movie career for a while, now she's a DJ travelling around America probably making decent money to keep her out of returning to porn.
