The women looked older than their years too! I think it might have been the clothes. There were no clothes for 'young people' really back then. Boys went straight from short trousers to a suit and shirt! Women just dressed like their mums. I think jeans were maybe starting to come in in the US but took a while to cross the Atlantic.
According to IMDB it WAS Vanda Hudson. Well spotted.
I agree, I think he did a good job with that Ulster accent.
It's the girl band that fascinates me. The guitar playing and singing don't match with the sound track. In fact, they don't seem to sing at all!
My guess is Hitchcock used stock footage and it was some anonymous lake somewhere in the US! They weren't so particular about detail back then.
My husband thinks it might be a Lancia but I've looked in Google Images and can't see anything resembling, not yet anyway.
Found this in Internet Movie Car Database: 1963 Maserati Quattroporte I [Tipo 107]
This site might help:

(We don't call it 'Somerset County', it's just Somerset!)
And every war movie ever made.
Thanks. I thought moviechat was meant to email when I received a reply. But obviously not. Which is why this is late!
But aren't most marriages of that length?
She may have paid her TV licence and electricity bill by direct debit (you must have those in the US) so they just keep on being paid. They broke in due to rent arrears so something must have gone wrong with the DD for the rent. Maybe her social security was reduced or stopped. It's such a sad story, to end up like that.
It's the same voice she had in The Odessa File so I think it's her own!
I have to watch some of this through my fingers! In reality, those burglars would have serious injuries - third degree burns, concussion, broken ribs, legs and arms and a pierced foot!
9 months later but just to say, I AGREE!
I don't like it when the poor cat is trying to cross the road and all the cars are rushing past. It looks genuinely scared.
NO!
Bit late after the event I know but I just watched this film having recorded it. I do sometimes wonder if cigarette companies quietly sponsored a film on the understanding that a lot of the characters are shown smoking, and not just the baddies. You rarely if ever see smoking on TV these days so that outlet is closed to them, at least in the UK. Perhaps films are the last place left they can fund subliminal and overt advertising.
Agreed. Why do these moaners fill up the internet with their pointless complaints?
Didn't realise the ferry captain was the real one. Everyone in the US is an actor!
He was always better as a baddie. If you've not seen Brighton Rock you ought to!
So embarrassing that Robert de N. called it' Hearford'. I wish someone had thought to correct him.
