They needed to do a non-offensive generic storyline to maximize profits as much as possible. A bland subject like that will not elicit strong negative reactions from anyone - and that is why it was the right choice.
It is a weak show. I am watching for the first time right now and with the hindight of it being cancelled, I can see the signs why. It is too flighty. The random screaming from the guy they froze is just annoying and stupid and they do it too much. And the male lead is not attractive enough.

Regé Jean Page comes to mind.
This is a pretty good analysis if you think about it, because Jonathan Bailey is also on Bridgerton but he stayed and used the hype from that streaming series and now he is appearing in more and more things. He had lonely travelers, and Wicked is also coming.
