There was no artistic purpose to making him a wookiee. It was clearly just PC inspired casting to pander to furries. The SJW social agenda wants to force these kinds of characters into kids' movies of all things. Just another example of how liberals are destroying our culture.
You keep repeating "there's no reason she needed to be a girl." My answer is the same: there's no reason she needed to be a boy either. Rey is a poorly written character as she is portrayed in these movies, but that's the result of bad writing, not because she's a girl.
GL's original plan for the ST had Luke training a new young female Jedi. The idea actually originated with him. The ST has a lot of things wrong with it, but the protagonist's gender isn't one of them.
