I think both Gaston and the Beast were on the same level of arrogance, ill tempered and selfishness. The only difference between the two was that Beast was educated and wealthy. Both Beast and Gaston were capable of being hospitable and kind. Gaston asks Belle about her book. Gaston tries to reason with Belle about marriage. Gaston even goes with Maurice to find Belle even though nobody in their right mind would have believed Maurice's story about a Beast living in a castle inhabited by talking furniture and dishes. Belle chose the one with more money. The scene where Gaston tries to kill Maurice didn't need to be there. It was like overkill. We get that Gaston was the antagonist for Beast because Gaston is the rival for the woman who could break the spell on the Beast. It was apparent from early on. And nobody told Belle that Gaston tried to murder Maurice. Belle makes her decision in not liking Gaston from the moment Gaston declares war on the Beast and that's only because she had fallen in love with Beast. Gaston had a typical reaction. Anyone would be afraid of the Beast. If Gaston had declared war on Beast before Belle fell in love with Beast, Belle would have fallen in love with Gaston.
What I'm saying is that the message in this film is completely different from the animated film and the plot is modified just enough to justify this reboot.
I felt nothing for these characters. I didn't care for the protagonists Belle, Beast or Maurice.
But the animated film is wonderful. Perfect writing/plot, characterization, acting, vocals for the musical numbers, the musical sequences were original, the movie had wholesome humor that the whole family could enjoy, thrills, mystery, and just about every theme mentionable. It lacked anything except for maybe the songs were too long (my son complained about all the songs) but it is a musical after all so lots of musical sequences are expected.
I could go on and on but I've run out of space.
