You're asking a flawed question, because Rey didn't *need* to be a girl. She didn't need to be a boy, either, or even human. It sounds as if you are actually mean to ask why did the writer decide to make Rey female, which is an entirely different discussion, and one only her creator(s) can really answer.

Asking why Rey needs to be a girl is no different than asking why Yoda needed to be green. He didn't need to be, he just was.

Hypothetical narrative reason/s:

The Force is strongest on desolate planets dominated by natural environments. Living for many years on such a planet enhances latent Force sensitivity. Also, minds uncluttered by trivial distractions or superficiality are more Force receptive - modest birth/lifestyle like farming or scavenging for junk technology provide such environments for mental clarity. Marital training enhances Force ability - even regular street brawling counts as it provides experiences requiring focus, reflexes, determination, etc. In the SW universe it is the norm for males to become Jedi and/or to be recognised for their Force gifts whereas women are seen as nurturers and supporters in society - Rey does not occupy a "normal lifestyle" compared to other women and force of circumstance has put her onto a path to Jedi mastership.

Real world reason:

Kathleen Kennedy since her earliest days of producing films has been interested it seems in presenting "strong woman" archetypes as well as a range of other films. Examples of such films might include "The Colour Purple", "Congo", "Twister", "A Map of the World", "The Force Awakens", "Rebel One", and "The Last Jedi".

I'd go far to say that in some way the Disney sequels/anthologies are modelled on Kennedy's thematic interests stemming perhaps from her films "War of the Worlds", "The Colour Purple", "Empire of the Sun", "Jurassic Park" ie. ordinary people dealing with extraordinary risks, personal loss, social alienation, unusual exotic scenarios.

She didn't need to be a girl. They just decided to write her as one.

Well I'm not in their head so you'd have to ask them. I really like the Rey character so I think it's worked out quite well.

There's no law in Hollywood or in the Star Wars universe that dictates her gender, unless you know otherwise.

reply

Because it's a reasoned answer, as per your request.

You've done a U-turn on your own requirements. My work here is complete.

She didn't need to be a girl any more than Luke needed to be a boy. She just is.

Lol! Your saltiness is almost as hilarious as the fact that you know so little about Star Wars. http://www.cracked.com/blog/4-pop-culture-icons-who-were-originally-meant-to-be-women/

"She didn't need to be a girl any more than Luke needed to be a boy. She just is."

Many of us would have been fine if Rey "just so happened" to be a (white)female but that argument that keeps being regurgitated is simply faulty considering KK doesn't even pretend to take that stance & in fact quite openly admits the conscious gender political approach to Rey and other prospective female characters in Di$ney's Star Wars.

GL's original plan for the ST had Luke training a new young female Jedi. The idea actually originated with him. The ST has a lot of things wrong with it, but the protagonist's gender isn't one of them.

You keep repeating "there's no reason she needed to be a girl." My answer is the same: there's no reason she needed to be a boy either. Rey is a poorly written character as she is portrayed in these movies, but that's the result of bad writing, not because she's a girl.

reply

[deleted]

Wow, you're a special kind of stupid aren't you? How would it serve the story better to make the protagonist a boy?

reply

[deleted]

Yep, you're a special kind of stupid alright. You haven't given one single good reason why a male protagonist would make for a better story.

reply

[deleted]

Holy shit, you're almost too stupid to insult. The burden of proof is on you because you haven't given me any good reason why the protagonist needs to be a boy.

reply

[deleted]

The question is why should the character be a boy rather than a girl. This time they chose to make the main hero a gal so deal with it. I like how they have made her overall the same as they would do a male Jedi.

reply

[deleted]

Because Han and Leia had a son and they hinted in The Force Awakens that Rey might have been Luke's daughter.

reply

[deleted]

Anakin's light sabre flew past Ren's hand to Rey. Strongly suggesting a link to the Skywalker family.

reply

[deleted]

[deleted]

Well they had a male Skywalker descendant in Ren, it made sense to have the other a female and that the two would have a showdown at some time in the future.

reply

[deleted]

Luke and Leia male and female - Ren and Rey male and female, This is my last attempt to explain this to you so fingers-crossed you get it this time.

reply

[deleted]

Get over it there is no reason why rey has to be male either

reply

[deleted]

Like I said there is nothing that dictates that rey should have or needed to be a guy either.

reply

And before that, it "called to her" at Maz's place.
