When he first came out, his material was completely original.
I should add too, one was a bit insensitive. Even though Kaufman died completely insignificant in terms of comedic importance, it is very sad for someone to pass so young.
Well, yeah, maybe it's sad - but it's the truth.
One really doesn't know why some in history have tried to classify him as a genius.
By the time he passed he was totally irrelevant.
Well, speaking from being there during his career.
He started off with a bang because his stuff was entirely original. This hooked him up with a successful TV show called "Taxi". He appeared now and then as a character he created. Kaufman called him "Foreign Man". The character's name on "Taxi" was Latka.
Ok, all well and good. The problem for Kaufman is his act grew tiresome, very quickly. Instead of going up and up and getting bigger and bigger, he became more and more insignificant. To the point one didn't even know of the wrestling business he did. When Eddie Murphy showed up on the scene, Andy Kaufman was 100% entirely forgotten.
When he passed, my thought was "oh yeah, I remember him". It wasn't a big deal , no one really cared. One didn't even know he had cancer.
So, there you go, this is Kaufman's career in a nutshell. Does this make him a genius?
I doubt it.
Without watching the video - a personal observation....
Seems Hollywood is running out of ideas. I suppose it's only natural. At some point you run out of interesting things to explore cinematically.
I'm a fan of the Equalizer series. 3 was enough. I found out yesterday 4 and 5 are on the way. I'm a fan of the movie "Orphan". Part 2 was stretching it a bit. FOund out a week or so ago, part 3 is on the way.
And the comic book business, OMG - talk about enough is enough. I find out in the upcoming SUperman reboot, a bunch of characters will be introduced. No doubt all having their own series of films, no doubt sequels will be included. Enough already.
A lack of original ideas seems to be the current Hollywood problem.
Well, this may qualify - plus it's all one could think of (aside from Synchronicity 1 and 2 by The Police).
The Beatles did two versions of the same song. This version is known as Revolution #1......

This next version, much preferred BTW, is simply called "Revolution".....

Well, I've seen quite a few of his films - not all of them though.
Based on what one has seen - he only did 3 I really liked. Nothing else stands out.
I'll take "Misery" at #1.
#2 and #3 are a toss-up
"The American President"
"A Few Good Men"
Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything else he did one is a fan of.
Yeah, agreed on the first sentence.
Dakota? I don't know, she's falling into the had her time in the sun and is now fading away category.
Hasn't had a hit in years. She even went the comic book route (Madam Web) -which turned out to be another loser.
Yes, ok, we are on the same page.
Not everyone (in fact very few) become big stars.
Where we may disagree is one believes you think several of the performers mentioned in the OP will become long lasting Hollywood stars.
I think only one of them (ROnan) has the goods.
But one could be wrong - we'll have to wait ten years to see......
Agreed except....
"That's true of any decade in film."
Actually it's not. Everyone has to start somewhere, and some do become big, long lasting Hollywood stars.
To do that, you have to have something going for you. It could be....
Great acting - Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Philip Seymour Hoffman, etc
It could be charisma - Burt Reynolds
Star power - Brad Pitt
People like this last in Hollywood. Even PSH, yes unfortunately he died of an overdose, but he was a steady working actor for 22 years.
Are you being facetious???
Or do you really believe the actual Noah's Ark, the one mentioned in The Bible, does in fact sit atop Mt. Ararat???
No. I'm not.
I don't think any of the people on your list is a good enough actor, has enough star power, or enough charisma, to still be relevant 10 years from now.
Ronan may because she is a talented actress.
Chalamet is hanging around, probably more so because young teenage girls go crazy for him. Ten years from now, they won't be - hence I don't think he'll be around either.
Not since Johnny Carson retired.
One almost had the unfortunateness of growing up with him.
By the time one was actually staying up late enough to watch "The Tonight Show" , which was around the mid 80s, he was it. It was him and whomever was out there trying to beat him. No one did.
The unfortunateness is something I believe to this day, he is much better than the rest. I did give Leno and Letterman a shot, brief ones at that. They're not as good.
As far as the current crop- Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert - I've checked them, once again, they can't compete with Johnny Carson. Not even close.
This is going to sound pretty cynical.
I don't think anyone from your list will be a lasting Hollywood star.
I believe they'll all have a brief time in the sun, and then fade away. Some of them will fade away quickly. Others may have a bit longer in the limelight (Chalamet seems to be hanging around).
IOW what one thinks is, ten years from now, at least 90% of the people on this list will be completely forgotten.
I see one name, one name that represents a talented actress - Saoirse Ronan. That's about it. One would predict she'll still be around in ten years, maybe at some point winning a Best Actress Academy.
Right exactly - you look at the timing of it and it's obvious. Mia couldn't take it when he went off with Soon - Yi.
And even if you take the timing out of it - I kind of remember the program that came out about 3 years ago. Allen vs Farrow, something like that. Anyway, everyone and their brother was up Woody's a&^%$#$s. Going out of their way to try to get him (for the simple sake of making a name for themselves).
He walked away scott free so I have to believe he didn't do a thing wrong.
Yeah, agreed on that.
Did he do this after Trump won?
If so, one thinks maybe De Niro has lost his mind.
I can't remember the specifics of it. I thought it was just one child, the baby - don't remember her name.
The entire event, to me, reeked of woman scorned acting out.
The fact that Woody Allen was thoroughly investigated, and absolutely nothing came of it - tells me he didn't do anything wrong.
Well as I said previously...
WHo knows?
Who cares?
De Niro's opinion on Trump (or anything else for that matter) is completely irrelevant to me.
Who knows?
Better yet, who cares? If De Niro hates Donald Trump - fine - it's his business.
His view shouldn't have any impact on how others feel about Trump.
Agreed, I saw it exactly the same way.
Although, he did make himself look bad with the Soon Yi business. Meaning I think she was only 18 and she was Mia's adopted daughter. Anyway, if he was what Mia claimed, he wouldn't be with Soon-Yi anymore, plus others would have stepped forward. He was thoroughly investigated as you said, nothing came of it.
It was a scorned woman acting out. Very unfortunate she dragged the poor child into it. Anyway it is what it is - however, even if this never happened - Woody Allen's prime is long over with. For me, he went from being absolutely hysterical ("Bananas", "Love and Death", "Sleeper") to being this kind of whiny, nasally old guy that isn't the least bit funny. Point I'm making is I think his popularity would have declined even without the Mia problem.
"Gimme Shelter"
Well, since one has a few here - and the Stones are on my mind - some personal faves.....
