I had 0 expectations, and was still disappointed haha. I don't think the filmmakers took full advantage of the premise. It's a fun set up, but not much pay off imo. There could've been great fish out of water moments, more time travel shenanigans. I mean, you're taking a modern teen, and putting her in the 80's, just out of the now mostly obsolete technology, because everything is in our phones, you could've gotten a couple of jokes in. Give the kid a phonebook and a rotary phone, make her do old-timey research, flip over a cassette tape... (I'm not a movie writter, but I could work on the Elle show). I think the main impression of our heroine from being in the 80's was that people weren't as socially sensitive back then. Which is true, but heighten it a little, make it ridiculous, make jokes in your horror comedy. Idk, maybe 2023 kids will enjoy it, but I didn't 🤷‍♀️. I did like the fight scene with Julie Bowen in the beginning though. Oh yeah, I got my own rhyme! 😎
You’re back eh!?
TBD Thanks for the kind words, SK! ❤️ Glad you're still around, holding down the fort! You know I always loved your weekly thread, and long ago you made the very short list of my favourite people here haha. I took a look at that watch party you all are doing now (glad you were able to finaly make a "movie club" work), maybe I'll join one day (if I ever figure out the time zone problem). ... Roubaix, une lumière/ Oh Mercy! (wtf English?)(2019) Follows the police men and occasional woman of Roubaix, France, while they investigate arson, and later the murder of an elderly woman. I caught it on TV and didn’t catch the very beginning, but it was engaging enough for me not to click away. This too jumps a lot, but it feels more well integrated into the fabric of the film, and almost slice-of-life-ish. Realistic setting, realistic performances, yelling, a who-dun-it. There is some re-enacting of the crime, which I wonder if it is a real thing that happens in these sorts of investigations. Sara Forestier is the stand out performance for me in this film. Overall good. I have one thing to say to you SK - You can't punch ectoplasm! And Heeeey!❤️ I love Housebound, 'tis most excellent. I didn't really like Cocaine bear all that much, and I could swear they dubbed nom-nom-nom sounds for the damn thing haha. Men and Knock at the cabin are to be finished at some point in the future. My turn! Mothering Sunday (2021) Jane is a servant to some rich people in post WW1 England, having a secret affair with the rich son of some other rich people, and the rich son is due to marry his rich fiancé. On Mothering Sunday she is granted the day off, and has a secret rendezvous with Rich Son while all the other rich people are at lunch. Jump to years later to a slightly older Jane, trying to write a book (I presumed a memoir of sorts) in timeline 2. Jump to even older Jane, trying to write a book (I presumed a memoir of sorts) in timeline 3. Tragedy, tragedy, sex, tragedy, tragedy, award. I clicked on it, and I watched all of it, but I didn’t particularly enjoy it. The majority of the story takes place in the post WW1 storyline, but it just randomly jumps to the different times in her life, and I didn’t think this was structured well. Some pretty cinematography, the performances were good overall, and if you enjoy naked ladies, there’s plenty of Odessa Young on display. I would rate it 2/6 ginger bushes. The Belko Experiment (2016) re-watch Belko Industries offers an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment in Bogota, Columbia. If you are a self-starter; proactive and approach every task with a Go get em attitude, you’ll soon be top employee. Skills we look for: Ability to follow through on tasks in a timely manner and meet tight dealines; Ability to accurately follow direction; Knowing how to use an axe, man. It’s James Gunn, it’s gonna be weird, and a little fucked up, and fun. Greatly enjoyed watching people killing other people for the second time around. Rating – Yes. ... You guys watch horror for the realism? Lol Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire – Which is ghouls, ghosts, spirits, demons, monsters, sinister influences, doubt, confusion, ominous music, slow pans to dimly lit corners revealing The Spooky Thing. I do enjoy a bit of carnage, but I just don’t find slashers in general all that interesting or scary. Though I do like a slasher themed horror comedy/parody type deal when I come across one. I guess my tastes skew more towards the fantastical. Also, you can’t 👏 punch 👏 ectoplasm 👏, so how are you gonna fight a ghost? I sure don’t know any Latin incantations!
Yeah I know what you mean about Jon Hamm, he was kind of the Elephant/American in the room 😬
I find that with a lot of American actors that pop up randomly in UK shows, they always stick out, and not in a good way haha. I don't know if I could make that puzzle now!
Who are we going to play with? That's a good question 😒
I might dip my toes in GD again, but I'm not overly optimistic 🤷. We did have a good group of people going in the "good ol days". Is MissMargo still over at Filmboards? BTW, we've derailed yet another thread 😁 ❤️ I'm doing okay, as you said it's been a strange few years, but you gotta keep going. I don't think I was that impressed with Good Omens 1 to begin with haha, 2 was a bit meh... I still very much enjoyed David Tennant and Michael Sheen's performances and dynamic. Jon Hamm though... not a huge fan.
We should do the emoji game again, that was epic 🤣
It really was! Listening to Africa has never been the same since haha. Who are we gonna play with though? Dazed!!! I saw the League of Gentlemen "reunion" and though of you. And I just knew if you have come back to this place, it'd find you here! I could feel it in me waters! Very happy I was correct and I hope all is well with you. Erm... You think this was a serious film? If all the jokes, and the tone, and all that happened in the movie don't give it away, on IMDB the film is listed as "Action Adventure Comedy Sci-Fi". Nolan's Dark Knight this ain't. It's a true testament of a filmmaker's ability if the thing they made still scares you years after, just by thinking about it. It's amazing how much Carpenter acheived in a single episode. I agree, more people should check it out. I was reminded of Cigarette Burns while watching the episode too. Though they had a different angle in AHS, it almost felt like a zombie thing, and not a cursed movie thing. And imo it could've done with a little more carnage and chaos, if where going with a shit-hits-the-fan scenario. It's been a while since I've seen Cigarette Burns, but I still think of it every once in a while, and how creeped out and unsettled I felt. I'm not sure if I'll remember this AHS episode in a month... Though I don't think you can compare Carpenter (even late period Carpanter) with whoever made this epi. I think this was her 5 minutes of guest starring done, to be honest. This is the last season, and not only do they waste 3 whole episodes on Jack's quest in the past, but now we get a clip show so close to the end? Really? I much prefer they didn't even bring back Vanessa at all, and let the little Van Helsings finish the Dark One. BTW, they could make a CGI Vanessa to help Jack escape from the Dark Realm, but they couldn't throw a wig on her for her actual appearance. I guess being stuck there gives you plenty of free time for a make-over. They are going on a mission in a zombie infested city, of course the women are going to be tough! You do know women are also a part of the military and police forces all over the world, not to mention they also get caught in tough, life threatening situations and sometimes, somehow they survive. That being said, this film was not "woke". The big, muscly man had to sacrifice himself to save the "stupid woman" that didn't listen to what she was told and went off to do something that almost got her killed. And all to save another weak woman that had about 4 lines in the entire movie. The only motivation for Maria to be there was because she was in love with Bautista. This is not progressive. Zombie Queen lady... hot even when undead, and subservient to the main Zombie guy. They even put that one in heels. And the "masculine lesbians", standard male wish fullfilment tough chick fare (since we are generalizing what men and women enjoy in entertainment). "She can kick ass and shoot a gun, but she's also super hot, and wears a crop top and a full face of make up" type of thing. This is your typical action movie filled with stock characters, both male and female. I do agree that Dawn of the Dead was a better movie. But in that the main character was a woman, and the main assholes were white guys, so I don't see your point in relation to wokeness. The only agenda here is Hollywood trying to push Snyder as a good director. Which he isn't. That's pretty much how I feel. When I think about it, it is a bit Shining-esque, except in the Shining the influence of the ghosts, and the evil of the place, had actual importance and weight to the story. This could've been a pretty decent domestic drama if they'd gone another route, or even an interesting character study. As a metaphor, ghosts are as good as any, but I felt it did nothing for the story here. It was so badly integrated and developed that there might as well not have been any ghosts, and it would've made little difference to the events. It's gonna take a bit more than a couple of scenes of George hearing whispers to convince me that "the ghosts pushed him to it". Especially when there is an established pattern of deceit and an insinuation that he has already murdered someone. Ghosts aside, the movie also has no tension and build up, so it was just boring and uninteresting. When they were questioning him in the beginning he said he was arming something for the launch. He mentioned that he though he was clipped in. I guess he hit his head and passed out. I don't remember much explanation beyond that. I still don't get how he would end up screwed in the thing like that though, without anyone seeing a huge man in a critical component... I didn't see much room for a crawlspace for another way for maintenance to get in the ceiling. I kept expecting for them to reveal that he stowed away on purpose, and I still kinda feel that he might have. If that is the case maybe someone helped him get in there and screwed him in. Hey, SK! I'm doing surprisingly well for what the world has turned into the past year. I'm not as active as I used to be (barely really). I haven't got much time for posting, and to be honest I got a bit fed up with GD, so I decided to stay away. I miss you too and I hope you and your family are safe and well! He did kind off take food inventory in the beggining. Remember when he layed all that food on the table and said his mom was right, that he should've gone grocery shopping? The water thing though... you are right. Even in real life when I see the water is being stopped for maintenance or something I fill up a bunch of pots and bottles, and I always have a big 10l bottle of mineral water, because you never know. I'm beginning to enjoy the show more and more, though its structure is a bit weird and wonky IMO. That being said the social commentary is a bit much. And by a bit much I mean it's both the text and the subtext in a very obvious way. As you said, it's simplistic. I feel like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too. A sign of good horror is that the monster stands for the real thing your story is about. Here you have monsters and magic and all that, and then you have the reality which is also filled with human monsters (which admittedly must have been the reality of black people in the US at that time). It's a tricky thing keeping a balance between those two things and I don't think they're doing a great job on that front. As an example of someone that balances those things well I'll give Guillermo del Toro. His movies are filled with monters and over the top evil people in a fairy tail sort of logic and it somehow works and it's not as in-your-face as Lovecraft Country is. I see there are a lot of threads about the racial content of the show. I don't think it's bad that the show is so focused on that, and it's obviously a conversation that needs to happen, and it probably is very cathartic for the people involved with the show. It's just that the execution is a bit lacking. I'm all over the place here haha. The worrior women, I though too that the men would've just shot at them. That's the main reason *some* European nations were able to colonise Africa. They had guns and the Africans didn't. BTW, the humungous afro... I very much enjoyed it. It was great. It's not necessarily a bad show, it's just a bit "extra", as the kids would say. Once a show establishes that the casting is not going to be period accurate I have no problem with watching people of whatever ethnicity they deside to hire. This show has many problems, I don't see this being one of them. I think you'd find that Ryan Murphy isn't going for realism here. In general I get the feeling shows just can't satisfy some people these days. Whatever they do they're considered "too woke". If they acknowledge the racism of the times, like Lovecraft Country, they're criticised for being woke shite. If they ignore the racism and just tell the story, like this show, they're being criticised again for being some sort of PC crap. There's just no pleasing you people.
