Oh yeah, I agree that a paper book would make sense for a "primitive culture". I just wondered why a starship crew would be carrying around paper books?? They'd have no need for them! It IS a big issue that the Enterprise officers kept getting captured. They should have been smarter than that. True! Of course there were so many episodes where Kirk beamed down with his First Officer, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Engineer which by military standards was REALLY stupid! Someone in Starfleet should have been thinking about "Away Teams". No way would the Captain of a ship put himself in danger repeatedly like Kirk did. But as Gene Roddenberry admitted, it was inaccurate, but Shatner and Nimoy were the stars of the show so they had to be front and center in all those episodes. Even if it meant putting them in danger all the time. Another thing when I am overthinking this episode (which I often do with Star Trek, lol) How exactly did the Iotians read the book? We've been led to believe that the Universal Translator allows the crew to communicate with all those alien races. But a book printed in English? How would the Iotians understand it without some device to help them decipher an alien alphabet and language? Like I said, a fun comedy episode, but if I analyze it, my head explodes! 40. If you live alone in the woods like Sydney, instead of having a couple of pits bulls or Mastiffs as guard dogs, you get yourself a sweet tempered Golden Retriever. It's a purely comedy episode that I can't think about too deeply or my head will explode. It's funny but SO illogical Some of the dialogue is fairly hilarious like Spock being "alarmed" at Kirk's driving. But really, shouldn't Kirk have said, "Being alarmed is an emotional response Mr. Spock!" lol And there's Mr Scott referring to cement overshoes as "concrete galoshes". It's interesting that the book about 1930's gangsters also included detailed descriptions about the type of clothing they wore, the hairstyles, and the automobiles. The whole premise of the episode is totally ridiculous. Just WHY in the world would a starship crew leave a book about 20th century gangsters on a planet that they visited? And considering that today many people are using a kindle or nook to read books or downloading them on their computers, it's a given that people won't be toting around books made of paper by the twenty third century! Unfortunately the writers in the 1960's didn't imagine those inventions. Oh I just watched The Victim on youtube recently. It was one of my favorite post-Bewitched films that Elizabeth Montgomery did. It was just scary enough for me back then. I was so glad to find it on youtube. I couldn't find a copy of it anywhere else. Also enjoyed her role as Lizzie Borden. She also did a TV movie called Mrs. Sundance in the role of Etta Place, the Sundance Kid's girlfriend. I think that was when she met her last husband, Robert Foxworth, who was her co-star. I remember reading that he said, "I saw her and I was bewitched." Did you ever see one of her early roles (1955) in The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell? She didn't have a big role in it, but it's a good film. Guess I just like Elizabeth Montgomery in anything! sorry Vicki, it took me so long to answer your question. I had to think about it! I didn't want to do a disservice to either the tv series or the films. They were just different. The series was perfect for its day and place, namely, 1960's television. It couldn't go too far with the Gomez/Morticia passion or some of the more extreme elements of the movies like, "Wake the Dead", when they went out to the family burial ground with shovels. That would have been too intense for television. The series was perfect for me as a child. It was just kooky and eccentric enough. But if I had seen the movies as a child, they would've scared me! But as an adult, the films are more my style. If that makes any sense... Some of your favorite old shows like Star Trek and Bewitched, well I am a huge fan of those shows too. I've been a long time "Trekker". I have the first four seasons of Bewitched on DVD. It's a show I have always loved. The Bewitched board at IMDB was usually pretty active. Here, not so much. (sad) I keep going there to look for new posts. But I feel so lonely. You should come over to the Bewitched board. I love talking about that show too! David and Nigel just struck me as musicians who would play whatever was popular at the moment! They seemed like very dedicated musicians but they would go with the flow. And they weren't exactly deep thinkers. As Nigel said, "David and I are not exactly University material." But they had musical talent and they went wherever it took them. As far as the other posts, it is true that a lot of bands and singers change over the years. The Beatles early stuff was a lot of Chuck Berry and other American rock'n roll. Their own songs were different. They sounded like a pop group and evolved into something different. I Wanna Hold Your Hand is far different from Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Kenny Rogers started out as a mainstream pop singer and then switched to country. Some country singers did the opposite. Does anyone have the DVD that includes the entire versions of 'Gimme Some Money' and 'The Flower People'? I bought a DVD a few years ago and the songs were included in the extras. In the old VHS copy that I had, only 'Hellhole' was included as a separate video. The scene where they force Wednesday, Pugsley and Joel to watch cheery Disney movies was so funny! It was such torture for the children. It reminded me of a similar incident at Disney World where I felt "tortured". Years ago I went there with a boyfriend. We were on the "It's a Small World" ride and after what seemed like a hundred choruses of that sickly sweet song I wanted to run screaming from the place! LOL You can only stand so much cheeriness. Vicky- you make me feel old! You never saw The Addams Family TV show or Gilligan's Island? lol Yeah, my sister and I always watched the TV show when we were kids. Even though they were the same characters, the TV show was a lot less "racy". I mean, the passion between Gomez and Morticia was toned WAY down for TV in the 1960's. Whenever Morticia would say something in French, Gomez would say, "Tish! Tha's French." He'd kiss her hand and work his way up her arm. But that was about as passionate as they got. Wednesday was just as somber on the TV show but she wasn't homicidal like the movie version. And I don't think we were ever treated to a stroll through the family cemetery with its assortment of criminals and "mad dog killers". lol I read somewhere that Pugsley was originally going to be called Pubert (like the baby in the second film), but they thought the name was too "racy" for television. When you mentioned the growth of Thing's hair, did you mean Cousin Itt? Funny if you did because when I was a kid, my family would ask me to do my Cousin Itt impression. I always had long hair. It was down to my waist. So I would brush it over my face . My little sister used to get a kick out of it. Strange kid! I'd love to read it if there is one! This was one of the first episodes I watched that made me a fan of the show. I love time travel stories. But after repeated viewings, something made me think that in no way could Edith Keeler's "Peace Movement" have delayed the US entry into World War 2. Her movement for peace would have had no effect on Japan and once Pearl Harbor was bombed, the USA was going to war, Peace Movement or not! In last week's episode he had to find another place to live. I really, really don't get it. His father paid his rent and his car payments, so how can Raj be so broke? What was he doing with his salary for the last ten years? He hardly dated because he couldn't talk to women, so it's not like he spent a lot of money on girlfriends. He seemed to live pretty much the same way as the other guys and they aren't broke. I mean, their expenses were comic books, take-out food, movies, etc. They were hardly living large. And the other night Raj had on a sweater vest he's been wearing since the first season. He certainly didn't go overboard on clothes! And now with finding out his father was supporting him, there's something he said in one of the early episodes that makes him look like a real jerk. I think it was the episode when Penny was short of cash because she gave her ex-boyfriend money to pay a fine. Leonard paid for her share of the take-out food. Raj whispered to Howard. Howard relayed it as something like, "Raj was wondering if he dressed in tight clothes would he get a free dinner?" Geez! He had a lot of nerve considering that HIS father was paying his way. At least Penny was supporting herself. That is an interesting story! I loved the book. It was so engrossing. Lefty Rosenthal had such a fine mind that he would have done great in any legitimate business. But for some reason he loved gambling and he became great at picking the winners. Lefty's story in the book is very interesting. It talks about how he could never really be in the Mob because he wasn't Italian. But I always pictured him as a Mob type guy from The Sopranos.lol I saw a documentary on TV and they showed the real guys from the film in their courtroom appearances. It was stunning to see that the real Tony Spilotro looked a lot like Joe Pesci. But the real Frank Rosenthal looked nothing like Robert de Niro. I kept thinking , "This guy looks like an accountant (well he was in a sense) or a college professor. It was hard to believe this soft spoken, benign looking guy was so involved with organized crime. Just an observation that I had. I haven't seen many foreign films but I do love Diabolique. I read about it in one of my many books on Alfred Hitchcock. It was a film he wanted to do but Clouzot beat him to it (I think). The way the movie was described made me want to see it. I couldn't find it anywhere so I rented if from Netflix. I don't know why but I didn't realize that it would be in French with subtitles. By the end of the film I was thinking that I understood French. lol It was scary in an understated way. So many of today's movies hit you over the head with violence and shock. Another favorite of mine, a totally different genre, is the 1990 comedy "Nuns on the Run" starring Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane. It was so silly but funny. Kind of reminded me of "Some Like It Hot" except that the two lead characters disguised themselves as nuns to escape the mob. This is interesting. Years ago my sister and some friends went to New York City. They had tickets for a few daytime talk shows. She said that they were instructed to clap really hard and cheer (every time , after each commercial break). The audience was supposed to show a lot of enthusiasm for the guest whether they felt it or not! It seems hard to believe, but the audience is orchestrated to behave a certain way. So I am not surprised that they decide on how the audience should "look". Well I always thought Ellen was a very attractive woman. But she's never dressed very feminine at all. She's always been one of those "butch" girls, gay or not, some women are not girly girls. My sister has been happily married for years(to a man) and she sports the shortest butch haircut you've ever seen. For her, it's just a matter of comfort and convenience. I don't know about being 'trans". A lot of it is style. Hve you ever seen pictures of men in the French Court in the 1700's? They wore wigs, high heels and lace. I don't think you can judge a gender by fashion. LOL Just my take on it. LOL No, you're not alone. It's just a very small group on this site so far. I am hoping our numbers will grow. I've been trying to get feedback by posting on every show that I like and even starting a "first post" on other old favorites like The Honeymooners. The Addams Family and its sequel are two of my favorite movies. I recently bought a DVD with both films so I can watch them whenever the mood strikes. They are great films to discuss. Like....WHERE did they acquire Thing?? Was he "part" of an old friend? lol Probably true. I haven't seen the early episodes of this show in years. So I just don't remember their backstory. Was she living with Dorothy at the time of her stroke? If so, that makes sense. Sophia probably sold or gave away most of her furniture, dishes, etc. back then. The best creature as far as getting its way and vanquishing any opposition! The one that comes close (that I can think of) is the Great White shark in Jaws. It sure was able to satisfy its appetite with impunity. It should have avoided Quint and his boat for the time being. Swim away. Have them think it was gone and then boom(!), swim back for another meal. lol They WERE a beautiful couple! Their love and passion for each other just jumped off the screen. "Don't torture yourself Gomez. That's my job." Funny and hot. "Well she died in 1989, so probably not so good." Boy that's gruesome, but I had to laugh. LOL!!!!! Your sense of humor is sicker than mine. LOL!!! HA! I hate myself when I fall for it and scroll through all the pictures only to find out once again...I've been had! I just hate when they do that, showing a picture of a celebrity and implying some terrible stuff. Actually one time I wished it HAD been false was when I saw a headline, "Celebs You Probably Didn't Know who Died." There was a picture of the beautiful Michelle Thomas who played Myra and she had indeed passed away in 1998. I was so shocked. She was barely thirty. She had a rare form of cancer.
