not_a_virus.exe.----Well I see conservatives do downright CRAZY things, such as your last post! LOL I mean, trying to argue with a leftwinger?
I'd just like to go on record for apologizing since the OP said conservatives never apologize. Well I AM sorry. Sorry that political disagreements have gotten so personal and ugly. And SORRY to say the lefties carry a fair share of the blame!
I had NO idea that Nicolas Cage was only 23 years old at the time! He's always been a handsome man, just not "boyishly" handsome. I figured him for late twenties in the movie and Cher seemed maybe 35. Not a vast difference in ages considering some movie pairings! Jimmy Stewart was old enough to be Grace Kelly's father in Rear Window.
Some people look older than their age and some look younger. I was so surprised when I found out that Ralph Macchio was 31 when he played a college kid in My Cousin Vinnie. If they had paired him with his boyish looks with Cher, it would have looked like Loretta was taking her son to the opera!
TV and film have always played fast and loose with the way they cast people without regarding their real ages. In North by Northwest Jessie Royce Landis was only eight years older than Cary Grant and she played his mother.
More unbelievable was the character actress Eleanor Audley playing Oliver Douglas's mother on Green Acres. Eddie Albert , her TV son, was only one year younger than she was.
Wonder if he's taken in as many stray cats and dogs as I have over the years!! ha ha
That is a definite plus in my book. Nice to know that someone cares about animals. That gets my respect when I know someone does charity work.
I could ask you the same question, where ARE you posting these days??? lol
Just happened to take a look at this Vacation question, and to my surprise and delight, there you were!!
I thought you gave up on this place. I am mostly posting on Bewitched, I Love Lucy, The Dick van Dyke Show and a few of the current sitcoms like blackish and The Big Bang Theory. Those were the shows I always liked to post on at IMDB before I got mired in politics. The View board does seem dead. Wonder who the "pee-ster" is torturing these days? ha ha Bet he "misses me terribly".
You can find out where I am by just clicking on my name and seeing my posting history. That's what I just did with your name. Seems like we haven't crossed paths because we've been discussing different topics. I also post on different movies or shows when they come up in the trending bar. Sometimes I notice an old show or favorite movie and get the urge to join in the discussion.
Nice to see you still here!
You really stick up for Phyllis Stephens! I guess I am looking at her in a whole new light these days. But I still maintain that Sam was kind to her in their early encounters B.T. (before Tabitha, ha ha ).
However, even as a child I saw a strained formality in Sam's relationship with Phyllis but not as much with Frank. In 'A Nice Little Dinner Party', Sam tries to get them back together after a misunderstanding. She calls her father-in-law "Pop." Frank always seemed to have a lot of affection for Samantha. But then again he wasn't being replaced as "the new woman" in his son's life. Women are so often portrayed as disliking their sons' wives.
Sam's relationship with Phyllis was rather cool. That was a trend in sixties sitcoms. Laura Petrie's mother-in-law never seemed to like her either. In fact in one episode Rob tells Laura, "She didn't like you."
I wonder if Sam picked up on Phyllis's attitude and acted on it subconsciously by keeping Tabitha from her. I mean, wouldn't the witches have developed the ability to keep young children from using their powers and "outing" themselves?
Several times in the series, they mention Salem and the witch trials. Surely they would've tried to keep a low profile and not be discovered as witches. But how to keep a magical child from using her powers? They must've had some way to do that!
In 'Sam and the Beanstalk' (I think that's the episode), Tabitha won't undo her spell. Sam says, "You're a little witch, but I'M a BIG witch and..." Tabitha immediately says, "I'm doing it, I'm doing it."
And it was shown that Sam's powers were not as strong as HER parents. When Endora crashes her honeymoon, Sam tries an incantation to make her disappear.
Endora responds with, "You ARE joking."
Possibly if Sam wanted to, she could've put a temporary binding spell on Tabitha's powers so she could safely spend a few days with her other grandmother. Maybe it WAS passive aggressive on Sam's part!
Rollercoasters!! Yikes! If I had to ride 'The Beast' or any other coaster fro hours, I would develop "medical reasons" that would keep me home. LOL
For now, financial reasons (and a bunch of pets) keep me at home. My idea of a great vacation is someplace warm and sunny with lots of museums in walking distance from my hotel (which has great room service and an indoor pool). Maybe some day...
I haven't seen any reruns in years so I can't recall specific episodes. But I do remember liking it.
The Beav and his friends got in all kinds of silly trouble. They were funny but they weren't the smart mouth brats you see on many shows today who are somehow "wiser" than their parents.
Well, Eddie Haskell was a smart aleck, but he knew enough to present a respectful (if totally phony) face to June Cleaver. "My, you are looking lovely today, Mrs. Cleaver."
I like the way he always called Beaver "squirt".
The ice cream container always looked like an empty carton to me too.
Yes, WHY did Ethel stop by if she was in a hurry? Never thought of that. Lucy's pantomime is funny though.
There's a scene I always shook my head over in the Madame X episode when both women think the other one is the neighborhood cat burglar.
Lucy tries to get Ethel's fingerprints on Ricky's cigarette case and vice versa. Well, Lucy's fingerprints would have been on EVERYthing. It was her apartment! Ethel could've waited for Lucy to go out and then taken a lipstick or hairbrush to get her prints.
Lucy could've done the same thing. But they made it seem as though the ONLY thing with their prints would be that case.
Lol, very logical! I think if we were old enough, WE could have been writing the dialogue! And we would've made more sense out of it!
I did think that Mrs. Benson just happened to see Ricky rush by. But that ice cream container DID look so small to serve five people! ha ha
Oh yeah, forgot that one. When I watch that scene I always wonder why Mrs. Benson was standing outside her apartment giving away ice cream! lol
Actually that carton looked so small, I never thought there was enough ice cream for five people. Just another ruse for Ricky to return in the middle of their "audition." I think it would've made more sense for Ricky just to say, "I forgot my wallet and had to come back."
This is a late response, but I like the first Louise better.
Actually the show came on when I was so little that I forgot about her. Years later when I bought some episodes from the first two seasons I thought, "Hey, there was a DIFFERENT actress playing Louise back then."
After watching the "first" Louise, I came to like her better. Somehow she seemed more like someone who would be married to Larry. I thought that she was a better actress too. Don't know why. Just one of those personal preferences I guess.
I don't blame you! I remember him from several episodes of Star Trek: Voyager. Good actor. I enjoyed the character that he played. Don't know why some actors are ignored!
The Christmas show is a nice one. But I still have trouble seeing it in color. It is "shocking" to me. lol I guess I prefer the black and white.
Never thought of that, but it would have been a good idea! Arthur and Peggy as newlyweds, cute!
But I don't think that TV series back then cared about "nostalgia" or continuity for that matter. Like the Bensons, the Ricardos switched apartments with them and we never saw them again!
However I DO think they were mentioned in 'The Business Manager'. Lucy had grocery lists for every apartment in the building and I think she said "Benson."
On a related topic, all this talk of "how do you watch the show" has me watching those first season episodes again! I bought that dvd about five years ago. I've hardly watched any of those episodes for a long time. Now I am going through them again. Some are classics, some are "groaners." I'll have to make a list!
Oh I forgot about Captain Kirk, how could I? I'm a lifelong trekker. Years ago I belonged to a sci fi writing club and one of the members and I exchanged a few letters. She belonged to a William Shatner fan club. She attended some events and sent me some pictures of him.
One time their club was invited to the studio to watch them film a scene of T.J. Hooker. She said that James Darren was very friendly to their group. He talked to them and answered questions. But she said that Heather Locklear kept her distance and "looked at us suspiciously".
As for Mr. Shatner, their club was invited to a luncheon. She said that he seemed to want to keep his distance. But the Mrs. Shatner at the time, the actress Marcy Lafferty, was very sweet. She said that she "took Bill by the arm" and made him go to every table to at least say hello to his fans.
Me neither. But I have heard stories. Last year I met a woman who was walking her dogs the same place I walk mine. We ran into each other several times and got to talking. She used to have a limousine business. Her drivers often picked up people at airports and had to take them to hotels or meetings, etc.
Naturally they picked up some celebs and they had stories. She said that Michael Keaton was a very nice person, very pleasant to the drivers. I was disappointed to hear that Jerry Seinfeld was a bit of a prima donna, DON'T ask for his autograph. And Bill Cosby was totally obnoxious and rude. I hate to hear things like that.
My cousin is a flight attendant. One time many years ago she wrote me a letter and said that she had Zsa Zsa Gabor on a flight. "A bigger pain in the a@@ I have never met!"
She also had Joyce Bulifant on a flight. Remember her from Mary Tyler Moore? She was Murray's wife. My cousin said that she was very sweet, nice lady. She smuggled her little dog onboard in her carry on bag and hid him under the seat.lol
Nice that you were willing to watch an episode you dislike to give it a chance. "Hand the banana to wise guy", funny line. But the one part I dislike is the chocolate food fight. I really dislike any food fight scenes. Several sitcoms have done them and they always strike me as SO juvenile and silly (and a waste of good food!).
I disliked the fact that Darrin was missing from a lot of shows. But what could the production staff do?
Getting back to Phyllis, she had the right to see her granddaughter. But Samantha's behavior was motivated by a desire to keep a secret, not to be disrespectful.
Phyllis wanted Tabitha to have exposure to other children. But how do we know that she DIDN'T? I am using a (very good) argument that you had on I Love Lucy. An episode had Lucy and Ethel trying to fix the boys' wardrobes. Some posters argued that Ricky and Fred never dressed so messy in other episodes. You pointed out that we only see the characters once a week. How do we know how they dressed all the other times?
Tabitha was usually "playing in her room" on the show, like little Ricky and Ritchie Petrie. But how do we know that they had no friends?
The Stephens lived in the suburbs. The 'burbs were mostly populated by families. Hard to believe that there weren't other children Tabitha's age in the neighborhood. I doubt Sam would allow Tabitha to go to other homes, but I think she'd allow Tabitha to have playmates out on the patio. So, if they witnessed some of Tabitha's witchcraft?
Can you imagine that conversation? "Mommy, Tabitha can make her dolls and stuffed animals fly!"
"That's nice honey."
Young children have vivid imaginations. Michael was turned into a dog and his mom didn't believe his story. Amy was turned into a butterfly and no one believed her either.
Phyllis wanted Tabitha to have friends. She meant well, but always struck me as rather pushy.
Oh yeah, I liked him in the Paris episode when he sells Lucy that "original" painting!
He's funny as the eye doctor who puts the drops in Lucy's eyes. I could never understand Lucy slapping the back of her head to get the drops out though. I've had those drops put in to dilate my pupils and they DON'T come out, hah ha.
Yes, Richard Crenna is a "sexy nerd". Sounds like "someone" has a crush on him! ha ha. Don't blame you. I think I've developed a crush on him watching a lot of his dramatic roles. Found a bunch of them on youtube. He is truly the "thinking person's" sex symbol.
This thread got me in the mood to watch some of those other "dated and fossilized" first season episodes. Last night I watched "The Adagio". Lucy took dance lessons from a handsome Frenchman so she could be in Ricky's show. He flirted with her. Later he and Ricky came to blows over it and had a pretend "duel" in the bedroom. They emptied their pistols into the air. Now what sane person would do that? Who would put all those holes in their ceiling? Not sure, but if there was an apartment above the Ricardos, Ricky would've been in big trouble!
So. it was no big deal that this Frenchman walked around New York with not one but TWO loaded guns in his pocket! Fred and Ethel heard the shots and came running. Ricky came out of the bedroom and they learned it was all a joke. I think Fred would've been angry that the two men damaged one of his apartments by putting a bunch of bullet holes in it! You think at least one neighbor would've called the cops when they heard a dozen gun shots!
Lucy's antics sure were far out and exaggerated. But some of the early episodes have some weird and dangerous stuff which would get people in trouble!
Ha ha! Glad you said it, not I!
Yeah, the "creakiness" comes from the absurd premise that the "young fans" would think Lucy and Ricky were so decrepit. The day before they were so young, vital and beautiful. Peggy just saw Ricky singing and dancing at the club. Would she really believe he needed a wheelchair the next day?
TV sitcoms were in their infancy back then, so perhaps audiences were willing to buy any absurd premise.
Janet Waldo was older than Richard Crenna. She was almost thirty and expecting a baby at the time. I could never figure out why she wore that huge coat when she visited the Ricardo apartment. It's in one of my many Lucy books. She said that she was worried that she couldn't fit in her costume or that she would look pregnant on screen.
Peggy did act like a "developmentally disabled teen." Many teen girls develop a crush on an older man, often a teacher. But to confront the man's wife and announce that you are planning to steal him away is a bit much. When Peggy thought that Ricky was "hers", really, what was she planning to do with him? Have Ricky move in with her and her parents? lol Or was she going to date a married man? Did she think Ricky would take her to high school dances and the malt shop?
Richard Crenna was indeed, the best part of that episode. He had a schoolboy crush on Lucy. He was just so innocent and sweet.
As for no Fred and Ethel, I missed them too. Wonder what the writers were thinking at that point? Would the Mertzes only show up occasionally? Did they think that Lucy and Ricky would carry the show by themselves? Of course in a story like this one, Lucy wouldn't need Ethel in her scheme.
The one thing I saw was a genuine affection the Arnazes had in this episode. They looked so happy and in love. It was so sweet to see. Lucy gave Ricky (Desi) such affectionate looks. Such a contrast to the last season. At times they seemed to barely tolerate each other.
