I keep seeing conflicting reports. Hit, or not?

I've seen it lumped in with The Flash and Dial of Destiny. Is it doing that badly?

Edit: Thanks to all who replied πŸ‘

It would have been a hit if Covid didn't inflate the budget. Now it's a flop when excluding rentals and streaming.

No it's not close to The Flash or Indy 5. Those are both 200+ million dollar flops that will result in several firings.

reply

its a flop because of 300m budget

reply

Net loss will be about $200 million!
This will result in Dead2 not having a massive press tour to save on costs.

I hardly see Dead 2 being a super hit. I will wait for the streaming on this.

reply

TBH they dropped the ball with the quality in this one. It's a three hour snooze fest.

reply

No it's not. The movie flew by for me. Felt like it was 20-30 minutes shorter. Plus the movie is already like 30 minutes in when the opening credits start (long intro and one of the longest intros I've seen to a movie). And it's not 3 hours. Without end credits it's about 2 hours 30-35 minutes.

"Net loss will be about $200 million"

It's a snooze fest in comparison to the previous installments and took me right out of the sense of continuity.
The death of Ilsa was so unnecessary and Esai Morales is not doing it for me in his role (loved him in Ozark) but he could not play himself enough (the actor is a conspiracy nut-job in real life).

It's a pretty good movie that deserves to be making money. WAY better than something like The Flash and Indiana Jones 5. From what I hear, it sounds like what Indiana Jones 5 should've been. Lots of similarities between the two. Also, MI7 is one of my favorite movies of the year. It sucks that everyone skipped it. They are missing out. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years everyone will be hitting themselves for skipping it. But at the same time, no movie is going to be 100% liked or disliked. So there will be some that won't like it. Also, I don't think the box office will hurt MI8. I think 8 is happening no mater what. Same with Fast & Furious 11. No matter what Fast & Furious 10 did at the box office, Fast & Furious 11 is happening. So I'm pretty sure MI8 will be happening no matter what the box office is for 7.

reply

It's not good. Simple as that. Box office is the proof.

reply

box offices proving jack shit. the bible is the best sold book in the world, doesn't make it the best book. same goes for movies. high box offices are telling much more about the marketing then the quality of a movie.

that being said, i thought this movie was just meh. its just more of what you have already have seen a million of times over and over.
i'm happy that lately all these milked dried out copies are starting to bunk badly. as long people go watch them and make money these studio's will keep on feeding them. time they realize people appreciate original stories and sometimes you have to take a bit of risk in stead of overly safe with these dead franchises.
i thought i was going to see something different or renewing with all this praise, but its just exactly like the very few last movies but painted with different brushes.

reply

When you believe box office means jack shit then there is no point discussing this.

reply

absolutely,
if i take a look at the top 50 box offices ever,
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/ww_top_lifetime_gross/?area=XWW&ref_=bo_cso_ac

i can easily name 40 better to even much better movies then what's on this list...easily.
again, marketing draws people to the theatres in modern days, not quality.

if you believe these top 10 movies are the best movies you have ever seen, well good for you, but i pity your taste

reply

You make a good point. However, I don't believe for one minute that MI7 would have not made double had it been as good as Fallout.

reply

So Super Mario Bros is a great movie then?

reply

Its as weak as MI3
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One & MI3 is the weakest in the series.

reply

the 3rd is to my likings head and shoulder the best ones, the more dark and gritty appeals to me, most of the MI's they made to fluff where nothing really feels at stake to my opinion, keeping things light, cruise being nothing less then a superhero ( a one dimensional one.the previous one i also though ok. but this new one along with all the others are just generic very forgettable movies with sure nice stunts but mediocre stories, copy pasted over and over.

reply

M:I 3 is one of the best installments. Come on, those two are far from the weakest.

reply

Come on, MI:3 was great.

reply

MI:III is the best one. JJ hate might have unfairly dented its reputation but it’s enormously tense, brilliantly edited and has easily the best villain of the series, and mindblowing action.

MI:VI has fantastic moments but could have learned from III’s tight pacing, Hitchcockian suspense techniques and focus.

reply

The Covid inflated budget, and the now chilly relationship with China hurts the most (it was released on only a fraction of the screens of past MI movies there). Also, probably should've been released a couple of weeks earlier, but it would've been hard to predict Barbenheimer at the time that decision was made.

reply

At the end of the day it will still be a flop... just not a bomb.

It's showing decent legs, should be at 500M worldwide this upcoming week.

Will definitely fall shorter than previous installments gross and since the upcoming one is considered a continuation of this one I doubt that Part Two will gross more than Part One... so Dead Reckoning Part Two will likely be the end of the franchise with Cruise as lead.

Something similar happened when Part 3 bombed... but they took some time off between M:I3 and Ghost Protocol to reinvent the series... I doubt a Cruise in his late 60s will be able to revive the franchise and also how can they make these movies bigger than they currently are?

I will still support them since it's my favorite spy series, but I'm concerned about anything after Dead Reckoning 2.

=(

reply

Yeah I could see DR Pt 2 will probably do similar boxoffice maybe bit less? or bit more? (maybe Paramount will go all out with 'the final Mission' thing to drum up more ticket sales). which will just about break even for Parts 1/2 combined. After that the series put on ice for few years while Paramount reconfigure, then reboot it with new cast/central star (less of a stunt show bc what major actor is going to want to or be allowed to do all the crazy stunts??) more group based russian doll/espionage stuff more like the tv series (and MI1)

THREE THINGS...

BAD TIMING...BARBENHEIMER IS KILLING IT.

PART 1 & 2...SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE FOR THE DOUBLE DIP FINALE.

FRANCHISE FATIGUE...I HAVE HEARD FROM FRIENDS WHO ARE MI FANS THAT DEAD RECKONING PART ONE IS UNEVEN AND A LITTLE BORING.
