Underperforming at the box office
Another example of an over crowded summer. Everyone is seeing Sound of Freedom or waiting next weekend for Barbie and Oppenheimer

shareSaw it the other day for a late showing. There were no more than 10 other people there. Was surprised by how empty it was.
sharePeople are calling it a bomb when it really isn't. It's only "underperforming" because the most cost $300 million fucking to make. Had it cost $150 as usual, it would be blazing through the box office. I still think it'll end up doing just fine. It's already made $250 worldwide in its first 5 days. I'd be surprised if it made any less than $900 million, which should be a good enough amount of money for it to at the very least break even.
shareMy theater was packed. It was great to see. This movie has all summer to crush it globally.
share$900 million seems like a big stretch for this film. It has earned less domestically after 12 days than Dial of Destiny earned in its first 12 days, and shows no signs of picking up steam. Worse, from the studio's standpoint, is the fact that it's earning the bulk of its money overseas, where theaters keep a greater percent of the profit.
If we are generous, and assume the studio keeps half of what it makes in U.S. theaters, 40% from overseas, and 25% in China, and figure they spent $300 million to make it and another $150 million to promote it, then the film is currently $295 million in the hole. If it miraculously earns another $300 million in the US, and another $400 million overseas, it will break even, but I see no way that that happens.
It should still make money. Mission Impossible films are like Avatar or Fast and Furious-- they have a huge overseas audience, so even as Americans are eschewing cinema-going, this one should still earn enough foreign dollars to turn a profit.
shareIt's doing fine. I'm still unsure why a 60 year old guy is jumping a motorcycle off a mountain to catch a train. Perhaps the writer's really enjoyed James bond bungee jumping off the dam and they decided to up the ante and age.
shareBecause that 60 year old just happens to be in better shape than most of the 60 years olds that will be in the theater..
shareYou're certainlycorrect. I'm just wondering why he didn't get on at the station. There's certainly less parachute packing involved. He could even ride a motorcycle to the station.
Haven't seen it yet. But as fun and good as the MI films are. Like any action film they do stuff like that for the plot and for our enjoyment... π....if they did everything logically the film would be over in 10 minutes... π
shareI can see it now:
AI is learning too fast.
Technician unplugs the internet modem.
AI starts coding, Janitor turns power off.
Then comes the office space beatdown.
I'm guessing we are gonna see a ton of AI based action films soon. Ethan Hunt goes after the AI version of himself or some such thing.
shareDomestically it's very close to what Fallout was at this point - going to depend on if it has similar legs, and the international take.
