Denzel seemed like he was sleepwalking in this

Seems like the theme with his past slew of movies but most prominent here. While the other characters did their best to fit the theme of the time period, Denzel on the other hand was just playing "Denzel" with a slight accent...mannerisms and all.

Imagine if he wasn’t in it? He’s the one your eyes are drawn to. His wardrobe and jewelry are a big part of his character. He’s the man among not very masculine men. And yet his sexuality is ambivalent. It’s not his greatest performance, but it’s the one that stands out in this most terrible of films. The other cast members you mention were not as effective - slammed with poor writing, most of the performances were lukewarm at best. It doesn’t even feel like Rome.

It was a real opportunity for him to do something unique and profound and he just took the paycheck. Truly coulda bumped himself up into new Morgan Freeman territory.

You mean he should have passed on this role? Because as I see it he had flair. The script was horrible. The casting was horrible. The plot was lousy. The animals were fake. The interiors lacked color. Who knew it was going to be this bad that Denzel would get dragged down with it - I guess in your opinion.

I mean it was an opportunity to play a very divergent historical figure in a way he'd never done before. It could have elevated the entire production. Maybe when Ridley saw his performance it was the Island of Dr. Moreau with Brando and he just checked out.

There was a 30-minute sequence where he sure seemed to enjoy hot-breathed lip smacking kisses to every male character that came within arm’s reach. Completely over the top

The best performance at all in the movie.

reply

That's not sayin much.

reply

That is right, but at least he did a good job.

I thought the reviews of him being hilarious in this movie were lies or exaggerated after all. I didn't find him that funny in this movie. He made a few crude jokes... is that what the critics were referring to as "hilarious?"

I agree. Everyone else had an accent to sound more like a person from ancient history except him. He talked and acted like a 2024 person for some reason. He just phoned it in
