why make it a comedy?

enough

As opposed to what? Make it a tragedy?

reply

just drama/thriller/sci-fi. it has been done before.

reply

An alien with the mission to destroy Earth and all of its inhabitants?

Nah, I prefer it as a comedy.

reply

enjoy

reply

I like it as a comedy, and am sad to see so little of it in the past few episodes. The first three or four episodes had several laugh-out-loud scenes in each. Bring back the comedy!

reply

I thought all the eps were about equally funny. [shrug]

reply

The fact that it is a comedy is what appeals to me. I would not be interested if it was not. Not everyone likes the same thing, right?

reply

It's good though and that's justification enough in my book. I can't say I've seen a lot of recent sci-fi comedies, but the few I have seen haven't been good. This one is very good.

reply

So far I really like the show. There were several really funny moments in episode 2. I like how the boy isn't afraid of him anymore and the scene where he got stitches was a hoot.

reply

Same. I think there have been good moments in all 3 episodes I've seen. I think the boy's growing lack of fear gets funnier in episode 3. But I like the humour overall - the way he tries to diffuse every inappropriate comment with his weird laugh cracks me up.

The Orville was great in my opinion, yet sadly cancelled.

as all things are unless they're a teen drama or a reality show.

reply

Can't argue with you there.

reply

The Orville has been cancelled? Is that official? I was under the impression that it was coming back.

reply

Last I read it had been cancelled.

And now when I check there is a google blurb at the top of the search list saying;

"Yes! The Orville has been given the thumbs-up for a third run, but it will no longer air on Fox, instead jumping over to Hulu. Both are owned by Disney, though, so very little is changing at the top"

This, if true, is awesome news. But it appears from some sources, Seth has moved on. So... I mean, he's the essence of it. I will await further news and cross all my fingers and other extremities.

Glad you commented, or I'd have missed that!

reply

That has been the word on the Orville for at least three or four months, possibly six.

reply

I've kept it in my faves on my streaming service, but so far, nothing... it will be a present when it does arrive!!

reply

I can live with it being a comedy, but I just wish some of the humour was not so dumb. I mean over the top idiotic.

I did laugh when the sheriff asked the kid if he has HBO at home, and to go home and watch the first season of Oz, then see if he still wants to go to prison.

I guess this series is a grow-er, not a show-er... have to let it warm up... oO

reply

hah

reply

;) Indeed.

Oh my God me too.
I was just coming to post about that.

Just curious, what's an example of dumb humor.

reply

Lmao !! ;)

Dumb humour to me is not being able to eat, and making it overtly obvious it's something strange. The alien has teeth and a mouth.

But it's just me.. ;)

reply

It wasn't until the show premiered that I learned it was a based on a comic book and sampled it, so I understand where you're coming from. On the other hand I miss fun shows like Warehouse 13 and Eureka, so there's that.

reply

I like the comic book but the TV series is better as it is a comedy. Since this is not hard science fiction, it works better as a comedy. The comic is a straight forward "fish out of water" story. It would be better if in the TV series he was merely stranded on Earth while trying to retrieve a probe rather than working to kill every human on the planet.

reply

I felt the same at first, but they toned down the quite dumb humor and I find it now to be quite entertaining. One of those damn insipid shows that grows on you. I thought ep10 was great. Loads of things left to fill, so I'm glad there is a S2, but all in all, a good show.

I don't think I'd have enjoyed it as much as I have had it been a progressive drama. Shows like that become a bit boring.

reply

Honestly? I agree. I am REALLY enjoying this show. But I was misled to think it is based on the comic books. Apparently, they are mostly nothing alike. I was wanting to read the comics especially for the humor, but now I'm really not interested since I know it won't be my genre.

I'm really enjoying this sci-fi comedy genre, the characters, and the plot.

So sad that they twisted the novel into a comedy. All because of Alan Tudyk.

reply

I mentioned Tudyk before I saw your comment, but yes, he being in this type of comedy seems like a very natural fit. I hope it does well for him.
Before I go to his IMDb page to check, I'll bet he gets a decent amount of voice-over work to keep his career going.
