So basically he failed his mission. He did not arrive before dawn and he failed to stop the first wave. He stopped off and spent some time with a lady and her baby even though he should have been about his mission. He never used a compass or a map to guide him so I have no idea how he was magically able to find the troops in the middle of the woods. Then when he does find them he takes a knee and listens to a song. Where is the urgency? The more I think about this film the less I like it.

I saw it the other day.

Some amazing cinematography, and a technical achievement, but as a movie it felt a bit 'meh' to me

It was not a war movie, it was more like Indiana Jones, a larger than life adventure that did not ring true at all

That's a good summary, a Young Indiana Jones adventure...but with great cinematography!

Not much happened and didn't go anywhere. The same can be said for The Grudge.

I will respectfully disagree. He still saved a good part of that force. The manner in which he pursued his objective did not bother me. He went through a lot.

Thats cool. To each his own. I certainly did not think it was among one of the best war movies I had ever seen. Certainly no comparison to SPR. Just not a top tier war film for me.

It doesn't help that his mission was partly foiled by closed-minded IDIOTS like that general played by Cumberbatch WHO DIDN'T EVEN FUCKING LISTEN to him when he had the letter in his HAND, not to mention the soldiers who were ORDERED not to let him in in the first place!

And after he does deliver the message he just gets under peoples feet looking for his dead mate's brother, rather than doing something useful like helping the dozens of injured and urgently-in-need-of-help people all around him.

He didn’t totally fail. He still stopped the second wave and saved many lives.

For the baby and the lady, he was worn out, dealing with a injury. And he was probably mentally shook. So it’s not so bad that he took a little time with her. She also gave him directions.

I do agree with the way he found those soldiers in the woods. Far too coincidental that the river would take him exactly to those people

it was a "more realist" presentation of a soldier

-all our "good guys" didn't live
-He didn't just go in with a machine gun and kill 100 germans and save the day
-he didn't arrive "just on time" and save everyone..

that was the point. wars aren't about action heroes getting everything right and "winning". its messy, dark, horrible gritty and you dont always win...
