This movie was TERRIBLE! Scarlett Johansson ruined it

Oh wow, where do I begin. (SPOILERS)

As an Oscar blogger, I am shocked at all the awards attention this shallow, empty, annoying and boring film is getting. It's the most pretentious crap I've seen in years. The only saving grace is Laura Dern, who at least has funny charm without trying too hard.

The problem with Marriage Story is that there is NO conflict. The main characters, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, are going through a divorce. But because we don't know what led up to their divorce, all the yelling and tears and monologues thrown at us become repetitive headaches.

The film opens promisingly. We hear voice overs from both stars about why they fell in love with the other person. Johansson's character is presented as a warm, selfless being who doesn't get upset a lot, who is kind to strangers, and who has lot's of patience. NOT SO. We find out this is just an act to get the couple into marriage counseling. Scarlett is none of the things Driver describes. She is a spoiled, self-absorbed bitch. I didn't find one ounce of likability in her, or how she decided to portray the character. The fake tears that fall from her cheeks make her look annoying and boorish. Johansson's voice has a husky, flat tone which makes her come off mannish and dull. And she's only 5'3- so she's dumpy looking and short. She gives the worst female performance of the year and yet Oscar's shortlist is looking good for her, as she got the Globe and SAG nomination. Don't buy the hype. She's dreadful.

Adam Driver is miles better, and a more likable character. But sadly he's also a wuss. He speaks in monotone passages most of the time, and his relationship with his son doesn't have a hint of chemistry. The boy is a prop. Again, because there's no real conflict (he cheated on her once, but why he did is never explained) we don't care. Both of them are rich enough to live in New York and LA at the same time. Both are rich enough to hire high end attorneys to fight out their custody battle. Most of the dialogue revolves around money and Scarlett's new movie deals she's making, and Driver's Broadway ambitions. Show business parents don't make for interesting characters unless they're portraying real actors.

Enter Laura Dern. If there's one thing I will say about this movie, it's that even with all it's horrible qualities (the script sucks, the direction sucks) - Dern steals the show. She's able to elevate the material to a more mature, layered level. She's meant for a more sophisticated screenplay like the one she gets in Big Little Lies. Here she nails every line, and every mannerism of a cynical attorney who also can also belittle you with a hand gesture. I loved her. Unfortunately she's not in this drivel enough.

The worst scenes in the movie -

1. Scarlett Johansson gives a MASSIVELY long, boring monologue about marriage and love to Laura Dern in her office. It drags and drags and drags. Like a bad one act play, where the actor can't convey their feelings further than simple screaming and whining. I never even heard the dialogue after a while, because it all didn't make sense. It was just babbling.

2. Adam Driver's embarrassingly funny song at the end. His random karaoke moment in the bar with his friends was just dumb. It came off forced and dare I say- campy?

Driver is endearing with the final moments reading to his son after the papers have been filed and the two get joint custody. After both Dern and Ray Liotta bleed them of their cash for a pointless settlement.

See this film for Laura. See how one actor can actually make you stick around even when every other aspect of the film is disgraceful (including the manipulative score).

FINAL GRADE: D+ (Dern being the plus)

reply

Totally disagree. I think it was an excellent film. Johansson and Driver are both excellent.

reply

I like both Johansson and Driver. The OP's review strikes me as overly harsh. I find it difficult to believe it's a D+.

Edit: Just noticed it has an IMDb rating of 8.1 with over 100k votes! Definitely too harsh a review.

reply

New movies always score over an 8.0 their first year in release. Give it another year.

reply

Even so, if it truly were as bad as you say it is, it wouldn't be at 8.1.

reply

Not so. Many people just click 10s and won't have seen the film. I've seen the patterns change. See the movie and then come back to me. I'm entitled to mine.

reply

That's true with movies with lots of fanatical fans, not with something like this. It's got a critic rating on RT of 95%, and 84% from audiences.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion. No one said otherwise. My point is only that I can't give your review weight because just reading it it sounded over the top negative, and now that I've looked into what others have to say about it, I stand by that.

I have no idea what I, personally, will think about it. Maybe it'll be my thing, maybe it won't. No matter what, I doubt very much I'll agree it deserves a D+.

I still think Francis Ha is Baumbach's best film to date, just something joyous about that film and Greta Gerwig is fantastic in it and black and white cinematography is glorious, I always stand by that film is more Gerwig's then Baumbach. I've always been hit and miss with Baumbach work, he's a little too Woody Allen lite for me. Some of his films are great (Francis Ha, The Squid and The Whale and Marriage Story) but he's got a lot of films that are just very meh for me (While We're Young, Mistress America, Greenberg). But give him his credit, Marriage Story is definitely one of his better films to date.

I think it's one of Scarlett Johansson's best performances to date and shows she should be doing more films like this rather then superhero ones. Adam Driver is always great, and he's every bit Baumbach's muse as Gerwig is. Lauren Dern is the show stealer anytime she's on screen. The film is a little too long in places and could have done with 20 minutes or so cut out, but overall I think a 8/10 is fair. Definitely better then a D plus but I can see why some might not like it.

reply

My opinion might not be quite as harsh but I definitely feel where the OP is coming from. To be fair I didn't finish it yet but so far it feels like we're supposed to empathize with Johanson's character but she comes across exactly like the OP describes. Just a very spoiled and self absorbed woman, moping about how her relatively charmed life that isn't as perfect she'd like it be as she longs for the world to revolve around her a bit more.

Scarlett’s best performance will always be Lost In Translation. I feel like this is marketed to be the performance of her career, and it does seem like she was trying to achieve that with her monologue, but she gave it her everything and it still wasn’t enough, so as far as her acting chops, I’m seeing her limit. Adam Driver was monotone with the narration, but I ended up really liking his performance because he was very natural to me. Laura Dern looked good (she annoyed me in every movie I’ve seen her in except this one). If she wins the Oscar for this I don’t know how I would feel because while it was good...like, really...that’s the best Hollywood has for us this year? I see that type of acting in tv shows. I agree with the OP the film started with promise. It didn’t go downhill for me. It felt like it peaked a bit then plateaued the rest of the way. It’s reminiscent of Lalaland without the singing and dancing.

P.S. I agree Johansson’s character was selfish and seemed to be looking for any excuse to end the marriage.

reply

I would say it's average, bordering on below average. That said, I thought the acting, by everyone, was the only redeeming factor. I gave it a 5/10.

reply

You made some valid points.
But just because you do not like a character does not mean the movie is bad. In fact it might mean the movie is good because it touched a nerve - and the conflict is within you.
I liked the movie and thought it was very good. Weird because I don't care for Adam Driver that much and he is in so much right now, Scarlett's character was just coming out of trauma, so she is not going to be lovable. I thought the movie captures that everything going to hell in divorce very well. I gave it a 5/5.

reply

Good point. It also doesn't mean that the acting is bad. If it touched a nerve, it's probably really good acting.

First off, nobody cares that you’re an Oscar blogger. Starting off a post like that just makes the vast majority of us roll our eyes. What does it even mean? You write stuff on your Tumblr about the Academy Awards? Thrilling.

Second, I agree with you. I’ve never understood Johannson’s appeal, and all of the things that I find off-putting about her are on full display here. Also, as far as story goes, the movie starts out promising by making her seem like a charming, selfless, loving human being. Within minutes, though, the rug is pulled out from under us, and instead we’re left with a character who strikes the audience as little more than a bitter, spoiled bitch.

Agreed, Dern was the best actor and was justly rewarded for it. The fraudulent, plastic acting of the main roles was distractingly bad, at all times it felt as if one was watching a Hollywood movie. It was in no way natural and reminded me of those kids in High School drama who tried way too hard.

reply

You are right in that its pretentious crap and the movie can be boring in parts. I disagree about the lead actors though. I thought they were both good. It also seems like you have something personal against ScarJo, she´s always had a husky voice and always been short. How is this worth talking about twenty-something years into her career? Are you just going to criticize her for that in every movie review she is in? lol. Dern was good at playing the bitch lawyer but I don´t see it as a great performance, certainly not Oscar worthy.
