Good Movie, But Not Good Enough To Get Phoenix the Oscar (no spoilers)

I loved the score/soundtrack, the art direction, cinematography, and the acting. And the script/directing were solid, but not a complete home run

I highly doubt that Phoenix will win the Oscar this year. With a movie this controversial he would have needed to be absolutely incredible. And in many ways he was, but ultimately your performance has to be backed by a very good script. I don't think the material was fully there for Phoenix to give the Academy voters no choice but to vote for him

Villains/bad guys do GREAT in the Best Supporting Actor category, but not nearly as well in Best Actor. The Academy will see this as an easy opportunity to make a political statement, and they'll do the usual thing and probably give it to someone doing an autobiographical role. I hope I'm wrong. Phoenix is as good as any actor today and deserves the recognition, but I don't see it

That said, I don't AGREE with the controversy. In fact, I think a film like this is much more socially-conscious than fluff like Avengers or Justice League. Those treat violence as something that is totally cool as long as we all agree that it's fantasy. But you still have people killing other people. Obadiah Stane, Ivan Vanko, Aldrich Killian, etc. were all humans who were killed by other humans. If you want to talk about normalizing violence, I think you do that more when you gloss over the actual carnage. This movie does not gloss over that carnage. It's the comic book movie we needed in 2019. It's time that the genre show what the violence that it has been hinting at for all these years REALLY looks like. Ugly, messy, bloody, and tragic. You don't just do a quip or one-liner after you blow somebody up

reply

I would content with just them giving him a nomination.

reply

Really?

reply

Really.

reply

You're easily pleased then.

reply

I just don't expect much from them.

reply

Well, this would be like his fourth Oscar nom. I think at this point he deserves an Oscar.

reply

Respect your opinion, but I don't think there's any way he doesn't win every award.

Usually, Best Actor goes to the best of the good (Hollywood politics not withstanding).
This was the best performance Ive seen in a long long time.

Theron in 'Monster' is the most recent I can think of, as far as drastically transforming yourself physically.
Of course Ledger, who deserved it, but also got some sympathy since he died before the awards.
Hanks in Philidelphia maybe? Abraham in Amadeus (impressive he didn't split to many votes with Hulce).

Its rare that you get an overwhelming favorite before the year has ended.

reply

I would argue that this movies "controversy" was a completely manufactured narrative perpetuated for reasons I can't understand. I didn't find anything about the film controversial. There have been far more violent films released this year that received no attention at all. Likely because they arnt good and wouldn't merit a reponse.

That said I think Joaquin will certainly be nominated. Will he/should he win is yet to be seen. Most award contenders are still to be released. I think he was better than both Brad and Leo in One upon a time.

reply

Oh, I completely agree. And I'm even a fairly liberal person most of the time. But the media has gotten completely out of control with their fearmongering of "angry white dudes"

reply

Not a chance with the movie made just for a white audience. It won't even get a nomination.

reply

God I hope you're trolling. Movies aren't made for a specific (fill in the blank) audience. They're made for anyone that takes the time to watch them.

It's a wonder the Godfather ever won anything considering it was "made just for a white, Italian, audience." Not to mention Boyz N the Hood getting two nods since it was "made just for a black audience." And the coup de gras, Avatar, a movie "made just for a blue audience."

reply

Godfather is a 50 year old movie. It made a profit of white audience because they was a majority back then.

reply

Statistically the white audience is still the majority in 2019 in the US. And you seem to have missed my point.

reply

Made for a white audience? Bro, don't be paranoid. And NO, #oscarsowhite will not block Joaquin getting the gold statuette that is surely/most likely coming his way.

reply

My prediction:

■ Phoenix: nominated, but he won't get the Oscar.
■ Brian Cranston: nominated and winner for the Upside. He never got any Oscar, and this woke movie is the perfect chance to award him while making some political statement.
■ Winston Duke: nominated for Us. Two reasons: it fills black quota, and he was in a movie from the new Hollywood's daddy's boy, Jordan Peele.
■ William Jackson Harper: nominated for Midsommar. This is the official 'intellectual' movie this year. And given the choice, they'll nominate the black actor in the movie.
■ Himesh Patel: nominated for Yesterday. Filling the Indian quota is much more difficult than filling the black or the hispanic quota. I don't think Hollywood will miss this chance.

reply

How do you do the black squares?

Good Movie, But Not Good Enough To Get Phoenix the Oscar (no spoilers)

^^^

While, there is no right answer here..

I personally feel Phoenix's performance is absolutely strong enough to warant an Oscar win, now that obviously doesnt mean he Will win, its entirely possible when they announce the Nominations, there may be another Actor just as deserving, but all I'm saying is, When I watch the film, to me, i think Thats its a performance good enough to warrant a Oscar.

also worth noting, after watching Joker, It put me in a mood to watch another Phoenix film, that happens a lot with me, I'll watch a movie, and it will put me in a mood to something else similar.

I watched "Walk The Line" last Night for the first time in about 8 years....and I must say, I was completely Blown away, I remember watching it a few time a long time ago and liking it.

but this time I watched the movie with the sole purpose of wanting to see and focus on Phoenix's Performance.

and I'm kinda in a state of shock right now....Phoenix was astonishing and I absolutely feel he should have won an Oscar for his Performance.

I do think Phoenix will get nominated for Joker this year, but I dont think He'll Win, Not though because there Will be a better performance, I just dont think Joker is the type of film voters will vote for.

Whoever does win, Will probably absolutely deserve it, But Phoenix would deserve it just as much

reply

Yeah, Walk The Line is one of my favorite movies. The combination of James Mangold and Joaquin Phoenix is gold

I've been on his Phoenix's bandwagon ever since then. I just think the political climate is too cautious right now. The Academy, in particular, know that the media is watching and waiting to shit on them after these last few years. Maybe they'll do it just to boost their pathetic ratings, though. Hope he gets the nom and even the win

"And the coup de gras, Avatar, a movie "made just for a blue audience.""

Hey man.... Smurf Lives Matter!!!

Oscar Academy has shown for many years they love (in addition to great acting) body transformation... actors who physically suffer to play their role.

Phoenix has this in the bag.

reply

Why do you say he has this in the bag? Have you seen Adam Driver in Marriage Story?
The "fight" is between Driver and Phoenix, at the moment, and Driver is in the lead.
