Given that the media constantly works to link incels to nazis and everything bad with the world, I can't imagine them feeling too great over a story that shines a light on an incel's descent into a psychopath. Thoughts?
Joker is about to become the next American Psycho in terms of meme/chan culture. This seems like a film which appeals to people who aren't allowed to enjoy life, which means the media will go ape.
It's a breath of fresh air to see a film akin to Nolan's Batmanverse with no silly gags and a serious tone. I'll take 10 tickets please.
Whether this movie is made for incels or not isn't the point - the point is that mainstream journalists are running with that as the narrative, regardless of the facts behind the director's intention.
Because while this movie sounds like exactly the sort of thing the DC fanboys have been dreaming about, the mainstream is where the money is, and the mainstream like stupid fun stuff like "Aquaman". So I'd bet money on "Joker" making less than hoped, but a small bet.
Neither the studio nor the creatives behind the film expect it make as much as an all demo ticking tentpole movie. It's a gritty, R-rated, early Oct release -- but it also had a production cost one-third of Aquaman's.
"... it also had a production cost one-third of Aquaman's."
I did not know that, and it makes sense! Dumb, enjoyable, comic-book fluff with really hot actors is an easy sell, while grim, depressing, no-fun comic-book movies are less so.
I suspect this will be a bit of a disappointment, largely as a matter of sheer bad luck. There has been a horrible string of mass murders/mass shootings this summer, which are still fresh in people's minds at this moment. There's social media chatter and mass media chatter associating this film with real-life horrors, which isn't the fault of the filmmakers but which has made the release bad timing. But this film cost enough that they won't want to put the release date back.

I only have 1 problem with your assessment. Jason Mamoa is not hot, and whoever was responsible for thrusting him into the spotlight as such will have a special place in hell right next to the person who made Nickelback a thing.

But most of the public in general would not even know what an incel is...you seriously think millions of people would not go and see this movie because of this ridiculous assertion?
Truth is this is not going to make big box office, it's not a traditional comic book movie and that's clear. But it will get largely positive reviews and will do OK and probably turn a profit.
Bottom line is...99% of the cinema going public are not interested in nor aware of agendas, metoo, incels, virtue signalling and other such stuff. They just don't care about that stuff when choosing to watch a movie.
And the small but prolific number that are and post on sites like this are very small in number.
This is interesting because insults and derogatory terms are usually based in exaggerations. Derogatory term 'SJW' is a parody of a person that pretends to care about social justice (his idea of social justice, at least). But 'incel' is based in a complete delusion, since it goes against facts, which are that leftists are more likely to be single. What I meant with 'interesting' is that while the term being an exaggerations is normal, what's odd is that the exaggeration is not rooted in real facts but in a delusional view. It shows how disconnected from reality those people have become.
I don't think that's the cause the media trashed it. My theory is that the movie is basically a journey into madness, it's about the mind of the main character, probably without any political message or even subtext. My guess is that the media expected the character to be portrayed as some Trump supporter... and it has been trashed because the movie didn't went political.
I hope I'm right, because a non-political movie would be a breath of fresh air.
