What If Superman Legacy Takes Place in An Ambiguous Time Period?

Like Tim Burton's Batman, TAS Superman and Batman, Superman Returns and Arkhamverse.

Having Art Deco like Metropolis and Golden Age clothing with modern tech like TV screens etc, be like having Golden Age Lois with a voice recorder or Christopher Reeve like Superman in a Fleischer type backdrop.

I like the idea of a timeless setting, but I think it could look tacky.

reply

Yeah Superman Returns had that timeless art deco Metropolis look to it, and it just didn't work. Looked cartoony and CWish.

reply

I actually didn't mind it that much. The movie was just dull.

reply

Can work if done right, some Batman films do it well.

reply

Even through some Batman films and Gotham the TV show do it well. There are hints that the film maybe inspired by All Star Superman which has timeless aspects.

reply

It would probably not be appealing to modern audiences but I would enjoy a Superman film that took place around 1938.

reply

That's a great idea, but you're right--modern audiences wouldn't get it. Most of them don't even know 1938 existed.

reply

How can you have a Superman movie in 1938 without having him fight against evil Nazis? And if he does...how can WWII still happen? Nah, bad idea...

reply

Not necessarily set in 1938 but the look and feel of it, have it be timeless.

reply

There's the problem of having a period Superman movie in 1938 is stuff like WWII and other social issues or you do something like Tim Burton's Batman where 1939 went on forever.

reply

Burton's Batman takes care of local problems only, meanwhile Superman acts international. At least since Superman II...

reply

Not specifically 1938 but have a timeless feel.

reply

Legacy will probably take place present day to keep costs down.

reply

That's pretty much what they did with the show Gotham. I thought it was terrific how they handled it.

It's important not to define technology too much no matter what. It boxes you in, creatively, for what kind of story you can tell. Keep everything ambiguous until you no longer can. If you establish that there's mind reading drones flying all over the planet, all the sudden it gets pretty difficult to present a convincing mystery.

Prolly a side note, 'It Follows' (2014) has an ambiguous time period setting. I believe it was supposed to be set in the 80s, maybe 90s, but due to a limited budget, the production wasn't able to uphold their vision [at least in regards to the time period].

As it is an example of a 'live action', ambiguous time period -- it portrayed this aspect very well.

After looking at the cast, it appears that this is another MoS film with a different JL-roster.
