Was there really a twist?

Some contrived connection to an obscure movie from almost 20 years ago is hardly a twist. How many people who see "Split" will even know that Willis was in "Unbreakable," let alone what that movie was about? Some kind of connection between "The Beast" and the fact that Kevin worked and lived at a zoo would have been better. Do we really need another movie (presumably Shyamalan's next) about a superhero fighting a supervillain? (Answer: No!)

reply

There was no ''twist''. And there was a connection between Kevin living in the zoo and The Beast. His doctor told him something along the lines of him being in that place for so long that this ''beast'' came to light.

Everything after the end title SPLIT came up is just a treat for the fans, the film completely stands on it's own. And even if there's a third film that shares this world, Shyamalan has stated that he's only gonna make it if the story stands on it's own. People really don't need to see Unbreakable to enjoy this film but they should see Unbreakable anyway cause that was a damn good movie.

@pjpoconnell Yeah, it was just a glorified cameo, yet some people are losing their minds over this "twist."

The only twist is that M. Night Shyamalan's still making terrible movies.

reply

The Twist was That There Was No Twist.

Based on what the movie set up, with the doctor talking about D.I.D. and how people can actually manifest traits if they believe it, The Beast was the logical "path" of the story.

And I was relieved that it wasn't over the top. I was really expecting to see a CGI beast-like character from The X-Men. I have to give it to M. Night for NOT doing that.

The twist is the genre swap.

The audience goes in thinking it is a psychological thriller, like Silence of the Lambs.

Then it is revealed that it is actually a superhero film.

The villain isn't a typical Law&Order: SVU guy...he manifested a supernatural personality who absorbed the zoo's animal strengths and can't be killed from gunshots.

So, it didn't necessarily need Willis/Dunn to appear to make it twisty - it just reinforced the point that the Horde is something beyond someone suffering DID, because he lives in a universe where superheros exist.

BelleStar: Congratulations! Your post is the first I have seen that actually establishes there really is a twist in the film and that it involves a shift of genres. I would, however, characterize the shift as from psychological horror to science-fiction. That said, I feel annoyed by that twist rather than thrilled by it as I was by the ones in "Sixth Sense" and "The Visit." There is no preparation for the fact that the 24th alter picked up superhuman strength and other abilities from proximity to the animals in the zoo. Dr. Fletcher's researches focus on possible physiological changes from the condition of dissociation itself, not from an environmental situation such as proximity.

no twist that I can discern.

reply

It's not a twist. And it's not an obscure movie they're referencing unless you're under 20, then maybe I can see that term used. Unbreakable made over 200 mill worldwide and is generally considered shyamalans best movie too which I fully agree.

i blame the idiot nostalgia critic. this guy in his revivew said it was the greatest twist of all time. that no one could predict it. i went to see it because of him. and yes i did liked the movie i think its a good movie but i expected a twist the all time. i thought that maybe the doctor was the one with the split personality and it was all her imagination. i thought that the girl is hallucinating all of it. i thought that maybe kevin is a kid who hallucinating all of it. but no. turns out there was no twist. nobody in the theater said a word about the ending. everyone kept quiet. this is nothing but fan service to shaymalan fans

reply

I agree. I expected a twist but didn't see one, because for me that wasn't a 'twist'.

Haven't seen Unbreakable and aren't planning on doing so either.

reply

Why not? It's an excellent film.

reply

I don't know why, just doesn't sound interesting to me. But if you say it's excellent, I might give it a try.

I had the same thing happen with "Don't Breathe"

First I love, LOVE Movies with Twist ending or Massive Plot Twists...

and I remember watching The TV Spots for "Dont Breathe" and In The Spot they specifically Said "Sometimes A Movie comes along with An Ending that Its all people can talk about Monday Morning"

another TV Spot Specifically said "You'll Never See The Twist Coming"

Yet another TV Spot said "One Of The Greatest Twist Endings of all time"

Now I did not go to theaters and see the movie, But I did go to extremes lengths not to read any reviews or any spoilers at all about the movie and Bought it on Day 1 on Blu Ray.

Jesus, was I disappointed....

*****SPOILERS*****

There was no Twist Ending...Literally nothing.

at best There was A "Plot Twist" that happened with at Least 30 Mins still left in the film.

I was so pissed and Disappointed, I liked the movie, But They Literally Marketed the movie as having An All Time Great Twist Ending.

The Plot Twist that did happen in the movie wasn't even great, It was a decent Twist, But In no way qualifies as Good let alone All Time Great.

and again The Most Absurd Part was, They specifically said "Twist ENDING"...Not "Plot Twist", Specifically ENDING.....lol and There was no Twist Ending...It had a completely normal ending.

Now to your comment above, I agree saying "Split has one of the greatest twist endings of all time" is Just Wrong

First its not really a Twist, Its A Reveal

Second, I could see how for a very small minority, The Reveal at the end Could be to them "Truly Great"...But It would only be for A small minority who are Huge Shyamalan fans and Fans who loved Unbreakable and have always wanted a sequel.

I could easily see how If A Huge Shyamalan Fan went To see Split and who had not been spoiled, Would truly be blown away by the ending.

But thats its, For the overwhelming Majority, The reveal at the end it either going to be met with "Oh Cool, Spilt Is set in the Unbreakable Universe, Cool, Wonder if there going to make a 3rd one" Or Met With just Confusion if they haven't seen Unbreakable.

what The Critic Should have said was "For Fans of Shyamalan, This may be your favorite Twist of all time"

just making the statement that it was "the greatest twist of all time" is pretty absurd and the reviewer should have known better

reply

I think when critics say to expect a plot twist, they are ruining it. What surprised me was that I went on the wikipedia page before I went to see this and even that said it would be a thematic sequel to Unbreakable- basically ruining the whole thing.

I'm trying to go for an engaging, funny youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance. A review of the movie here-https://youtu.be/_2I1rJ2vSZM

reply

Thank you! I completely agree -- telling someone in advance that there is a twist or reveal or whatever you want to call some unexpected, out-of-left-field element at the end of a movie IS spoiling it.

reply

The twist is probably more for Unbreakable fans and they're the only ones to get it.

Another poster below mentioned that the twist is the change in genre from a psychological thriller to a superhero film. I agree.

But there is also a second meaning to the twist, in that this is a covert or stealth sequel to Shyamalan's greatest film - Unbreakable. For many of us Unbreakable fans, we have been clamoring for a sequel especially ever since we heard that Shyamalan intended it to be a trilogy. Going into this film, we never expected it so imagine our excitement when we found out that this is an origin story for a supervillain in his Unbreakable universe. Just let that sink in.

1. No one has ever ever made a silent surprise sequel, Shyamalan has done it first and I can see many people imitating this hence forth.

2. No one has ever made an origin story for a Super Villain either and Shyamalan again has broken new ground in making it first and doing it well.

Remember, Shyamalan made Unbreakable before the plethora of Marvel films today and made an origin superhero film grounded in reality way before Batman Begins. I think he deserves accolades for all of this and I am very excited for the third installment.

reply

It seems like with the Venom origin film, origina supervillains are going to be the thing and started by Shyamalan himself.
