What would have been the realistic reaction to a black kid dating a white kid in the 80s’?
Considering how Max’s step father is, I’m surprised she’s still allowed to be with Lucas.

shareI'm not sure. I went to high school a small town outside of a metro area, small white population and there were a handful of black kids but I don't remember any of then dating anyone white. They were popular, one was a cheerleader, one in football and basketball, one in track field events and wrestling, one was a scholar. I think the football player did take the cheerleader to a dance once and I don't think she liked him much. There was no snubbing with any of them and they weren't shy or acted like they were out of place but I would imagine they would have felt a minority just because. Honestly, I don't know what the reaction would have been if any since they were all well liked, maybe some raised eyebrows, I don't know but it's a guess. None were in my class, though.
Now, back then it was more break dancing and hip hop and ghetto rap didn't rise until late eighties and early nineties that was very influential to the black populace so basically back then we all dressed the same in regular or trendy clothing except for the "hoods".
But I don't know about other schools or those in the city.
It was generally accepted in the High Schools I attended during the late 80s. I lived in a fairly large and diverse city. Whites, Blacks, Latinos, Asians…interracial dating was fairly common amongst young people.
But that’s New York, I couldn’t say what went on in rural towns or in other regions of the country.
Confusion would be the natural reaction. Max is a pretty and skinny white girl.
shareIt happened.
Did it happen a lot? No.
I think a few people might have been bothered by it, particularly from the Baby-Boomer generation, a few people might have looked at them funny, but otherwise, nobody would have gotten nasty towards them over it.
shareIn a modern American city, nobody would have said shit. Racists had learned to keep their mouths shut by then. You'd think a little rural town in Indiana would be more backward, but hard to say unless you lived in one at the time. Growing up in SoCal in the 1970s, my best friend's parents were from Iowa and had hick accents, or at least his dad did. One day he overheard us saying the N word... we were little kids and didn't really understand what we were saying... but he lit us up so hard, we understood it after that and knew not to say it anymore. He might have been a redneck from Iowa, but he was one of the most anti racist people I ever knew.
shareNo one gave a shit. People are much more uptight about it now.
sharePeople are much more emboldened and comfortable being openly racist now i.e. for the last six years.
shareOnly the leftists.
shareThe KKK was founded by the Democrat party. But I'll give you $1000 cash for every current member of the KKK you can find who isn't a registered Republican.
shareYeah, I would've been a Republican way back in the day. They were way more progressive than the shitty ass conservative Democrats were. Both parties still suck shit today, but I definitely would've been more comfortable identifying with the Republican party back then.
shareYou'd likely pay nothing if you offered a $1000 for each present-day KKK member of any race, gender, or political persuasion that anybody outside the FBI could name. They're an ineffectual nothing of an organization, no matter how hard Democrats try to resurrect them for crass political purposes.
shareYou got me, my money's safe and I damn well know it.
Let's not mince words, ALL racist hate groups in the US today are pathetic embarrassing jokes. But the point is, however small and retarded these groups are, they're populated by hardcore right wing conservatives, some disguised as libertarians. Not leftists.
When you see a youtube video from 2017 of some Karen on a subway yelling in a black guy's face to "GO BACK TO AFRICA NIGGER" it's not very likely she's a liberal Democrat.
I mean... look at how many mixed-race half-black people are in USA. Among celebrities, athletes, normals. They all had to be born when their white and black parents married and dated before that. So it had to be pretty common.
People who are now 38 years - had to be born in 1984.
Hollywood and lefties are so lied up that its hard to even know now what happened back there. Because people make their assumptions on movies. But those can lie. And basically only people who lived there in that time can tell actual truth.
And when you think of it - its kinda even shocking that ST didnt address Lucas race that much. They just treated him as regular human being without making him victim of racists as it it now basically every show does. With black characters around white woke lefties would made those characters to be harassed by evil whites for no reason.
