worldwide gross 173 Million - Very disappointing

By comparison No Time to Die grossed 800 million.

reply

Disappointing for whom??

It will make money in the end, plus the dvd and blu-ray sales.

And apparently a sequel is planned so I guess was not that disappointing for Sony ...

reply

It cost 75 million to make while 2016 cost 144 million, but with marketing and other costs 2016 needed 300 million to break even and half a billion to be considered a success.

Afterlife will probably make even more money on streaming etc.

Yeah, I think releasing things in theaters around holidays doesn't make sense with covid going around. People are already paranoid about family get togethers. I think this is going crush it streaming.

Fans excitement over the movie and its small commercial success shows the franchise still has interest, but as mentioned in another thread the film felt like a third movie had to have been made years to create a sufficiently large franchise, there's a reason why it's just 184 million worldwide during the pandemic with just going to theaters, if it came out just before the pandemic maybe, Spiderman No Way Home is already breaking box office records during the pandemic because Spiderman is a more established franchise in worldwide terms.

Spider-man and Ghostbusters aren't even in the same league, agreed. Don't overlook SM attachment to the MCU has a huge boost too, but yeah, he's iconic in so many ways. Ghostbusters is a pretty isolated IP, but this was actually a pretty good movie, so I think the streaming will reflect positive word of mouth. I also think the 2016 Ghostbusters put a bad taste in everyone's mouth, and people were reluctant to give money to a perceived dying franchise.

They've been movies that have done better on streaming than in cinemas during the pandemic, streaming is becoming the new China where most movies did better there, Mortal Kombat has done better on HBO Max than it did in theatres.

reply

So it made 173 million from a source thats less than a third of the income. The other two thirds (streaming and syndication) made unknown amount of money because thats secret nowadays. Lets give the box office a very optimistic view and say that the other two will gross only as much - thats 173 *3 = 519 mil. Success.

reply

Now it's 190 plus worldwide, heard it's doing well on VOD.

Other films like Mortal Kombat did better on HBO Max than it did in theatres.

reply

Nowadays its weird for a movie to do better on box office than on VOD.

reply

Unless it's Spiderman No Way Home.

VOD is sort of becoming the new China for Hollywood, where China Box Office used to be critical to many of the big Hollywood movies.

reply

Well big spectacle movies will hold out on the big screen longer, sure.

I bet they will string along the idea of a sequel for 6 months and then quietly drop it. The film made its money back, but a sequel would make much less than this one did. It would not have the reboot/remake gimmick "even this one was the second reboot", the original cast won't be in it and if they were no one would really care for a 2 minute cameo, and the kid ghostbusters didn't really work/draw a crowd.

They were expecting franchise making numbers with this film and it did not happen. They will wait a few years and then do another reboot with an older group of guys from whatever is trending at the time.

reply

It's been received well by the fans and will do well with streaming and physical media sales. I'd call that a success.

reply

There's another reason other than the pandemic it's not going as far as 200 million, the franchise isn't as big as other movie franchises due to thirty years of inactivity and I think there had to have been more than two films with the original guys in the first place to create a massive franchise, if it came out ten years ago maybe it would go over 200 million.

reply

Ghostbusters isn't as big as other movie franchises like Spiderman or Bond due to thirty years of inactivity, 184 million against a 75 million budget is not bad.

reply

I mean... No Time to Die came out at a bit better time, COVID wise... Cases are exploding again, due to the holiday celebrations kicking the case numbers into high gear. Had that not happened, people would have been less iffy about attending the movie in person, and this movie would have pulled in a much better opening. But... COVID's gotta COVID I guess... :-s

The all female version really tarnished the brand.

reply

Yeh its like that also happened with Terminator - Genisys pretty much killed interest for Dark Fate (even though DF wasnt much better). also Prometheus - Covenant. and Matrix the 2003 sequels must have killed alot of interest for Resurrections.

reply

This movie had to overcome the female Ghostbuster turd that put some serious stink on any Ghostbuster movie that was going to come out. I knew people that refused to even give this one a chance simply because they were so pissed at the female turd movie. I suspect if they had managed to drag themselves in to see this one that they would have been pleasantly surprised. I didn't expect much after the female turd version, but found this one to be fairly decent as a sequel to the original Ghostbuster movies.

Box office numbers aren’t the be all, end all that they once were before the pandemic. Many companies are making a ton through streaming. With the high numbers this has from streaming, i’d think the film has likely made something like 300+ million overall.

reply

Had it been released last year as planned with no pandemic it would’ve grossed more than 173 million

reply

its 195m now , still meh
