Garrett's Racist Jokes (Serious Discussion)

Yesterday while I was watching the show when Garrett was explaining the rules of his apartment to Jonah, he said that when his black friends come over Jonah would not be allowed to be there. I found myself questioning the "funniness" or necessity of the comment. Overall it seemed racist and as others have pointed out before, if the roles were reversed, NBC would definitely face extreme backlash. Wouldn't NBC take extra caution in writing less racially charged jokes on their network? I don't get how this one slipped through the cracks along with some of Garrett's other comments.

My gf pointed out that had Jonah recently dealt with an embarrassing racist moment, this joke would have landed since Garrett would be poking fun at Jonah's situation.

Am I reading too far into this or just missing the point?

It is so funny when people come up with arbitrary rules like this. Like they want blacks to be allowed to say the N-word but then insist on losing their mind when someone else dares to. When it's just a word. So silly.

Maybe blacks don't get to dictate what racism is, if they are as opressed as they like to pretend that they are they certainly don't :)

white people always bring up the "N-word" for any excuse talking about racism. Racism isn't just about the "N-word" and if white people ever really experienced it, they would know that.
And, aside from those who experience racial discrimination, who else would dictate what racism is or isn't? LMAO

Stop with the “if the roles were reversed” thing. White people are too determined to victims of racism. Black people face real racism, hence why them making jokes like that isn’t a big deal. You’re overreacting.

Reading too much into it.

Garrett's comment isn't racist because he isn't racist.

And in the realm of the show (much like Dre's boss in 'Blackish,' if it were in his nature to be racist, the network would have no problem with it.

Also, Garrett not wanting Jonah around is Black friends isn't so much that he's white, but because he's white AND uncool/corny.

they just aired an episode thematically about racism,
very funny but definitely trying to force some stereotypical "white people-isms" down our throats while portraying the POC as good, normal humans merely observing the absurdity of whites caught up in their white people world bubbles
