The writers really dumped on his character. They made him a sad attention starved spineless coward and ultimately left him absolutely no redeeming qualities. I'd always hoped for the slightest attempt for redemption which would have IMO made for an interesting arc but instead the writers were content with him being the cowardly bad guy throughout.
