Was this the DUBMEST MOMENT IN THE HISTORY OF FILM?

It's already bad enough they turn Star Lord into an idiot who can't wait five seconds to beat the crap out of a soon-to-be-defenseless Thanos -- but as soon as Star Lord started punching Thanos, why didn't Spidey spend half a second to subdue Star Lord with web spray and then go back to ripping the gauntlet off?

reply

Yes man, you smart. This film insulted your intelligence. Pity.

Excelsior!

reply

Thanos deliberately told Star Lord that he killed his girlfriend so that SL would interfere with the Avengers' efforts to rip off the gauntlet, I think. It was rather weird.

reply

Not weird - I think you’re right on the money

Thanos knew exactly how Quill felt, and he knew he was losing his gauntlet

I think it was all about manipulation

reply

No. It made perfect sense. Star Lord is not an idiot, he's a human (mostly) with human emotions.

Speaking from personal experience as someone whose girlfriend was murdered, when you hear news like that, you practically black out and lose all capacity for reason. If her killer had been within arms' reach when I received the news, I would have reacted the same way, no matter what the consequences of my actions may have been.

reply

Thanks for sharing and helping us understand his thought process. His reaction makes total sense if you really take the time to put yourself in his shoes.

reply

Yeah, I had no problem with that, and anyone saying it's some kind of cop out or lazy writing lacks understanding of basic human nature. Starlord did what nearly anyone would do, and he's been written as a character who always acts first thinks later. Lazy writing would have been to have him rein it in and wait for the gauntlet to come off.

Alternate theory-- Dr. Strange knew Starlord had to do that in the one victorious timeline, and orchestrated it, or outright told him to do it.

reply

I've heard other people say that about Dr Strange as well. It's an intriguing theory. It's going to be a long year. 😞

reply

Still doesn't explain why Peter Parker didn't spend a split-second to subdue Starboy with web goo.

reply

Maybe he was too distracted trying to pull a universe-ending gauntlet off the hand of the most powerful being in existence to think about what Starlord may or may not be about to do?

reply

Peter takes his cues from Stark. Stark was the one trying to control Quill, so Parker didn't interfere

reply

Not to trivialize your real world experience, but I have to add ... I thought Pratt was amazing in this scene

He went from cocky to scared to enraged across just a few seconds. It looked like he aged ten years in one instant.

I noticed the same thing in GotG, when he finally read his mom's note, and again in GotG2 at Yondu's funeral. Guy's got some acting chops.

reply

Sorry for your loss.

reply

Dis is very good pt but only 2nd dumbest moment in history of film since ur berf vid takez ze cake there.

reply

Hez gotter berf vid? How u kno?

reply

You're going to have plot hole or "oh, c'mon" type moments in EVERY super hero/comic book based movie ...or are you that dumb to think otherwise?

reply

*SPOILERS* I thought about this too, another dumb moment was at the end when Thanos is wrecking everyone and Thor comes in at the very last moment. Where was he the entire time?

reply

I assumed he was taking out the remaining forces.

reply

It just seemed as if almost everyone was there to fight Thanos. Thor, being one who can practically fly/jump out the gym would have been a prime candidate to be there. It would seem as if he would prioritize Thanos over the grunts.

Either way, I still think the Starlord moment was just terribly poor writing. It angered me because I thought the movie did so many things right (especially for having so many characters), but I could just not get that scene out of my head. Still really liked the movie, but I wish that part had been changed.

reply

He was probably looking for him but with the army in the field and the fight trickling over to the waterfalls and ditches, it probably took some time to find out where everyone was.

The Starlord thing is frustrating, I understand.

reply

About Thor being late, he's fighting the enemy and looking for Thanos. But since he came later to the battle, I guess he was not connected to the Team Ration. I remember Captain America calling for backup, I think he says something like "everyone in my position we have incoming" or something similar. Which is why most of the heroes are there at that moment, but Thor did not have any way to know that, but after a while when he either notices that everyone is the same location or he sees Thanos.

On the other hand, I don't think Quill reaction is lazy writing, I think is a reasonable reaction to someone like Quill, passionate, impulsive and not the smartest in the room. You would react that way if you were him, even Iron Man knows that which is why he tries to avoid it, but clearly fails to do so. Another theory that I am quite confident in it is that this was Dr Strange plan all along, the only outcome he says the Avengers winning was by losing first, and by keeping Iron Man alive.

We'll have to wait a year to see!

reply

He was destroying Thanos' ships, very busy at it, as the movie showed. He had no communication device to hear when Captain called for backups, so he probably couldn't know Thanos himself had arrived. Damn, Captain didn't even say "Thanos is here", he only said we have company (or incoming, I do not remember well, but he never said Thanos). And while it was the "last moment" for us, the viewers, why would it be the last moment for Thor? He didn't know Thanos had obtained the other three stones and that he was getting the last one at that very moment.

What a bunch of pathetic nitpicks in this thread. So, you surely thought it was dumb when Stark went crazy on Bucky for killing his parents (even knowing he was being controlled at the time) and wanted to kill him and even Captain America if needed. Or with Quill loosing it when he knew Ego killed his mother.

reply

The Stark moment was a bit dumb, but this is a billion times worse because the fate of billions of people hang in the balance and Starboy couldn't handle his shit for five extra seconds. Five seconds! That's all he had to wait to beat the crap out of a defenseless Thanos! Five seconds!

reply

Bingo

reply

I just gotta say I don't know I can say dumbest ever but those stupid Emo Peter dance scenes in Spider-Man 3 are way worse than anything that's in the MCU.

reply

ya as Others Have said, They set the moment up earlier in the film...When Quill was forced to try and Kill Gamera, Thanos was there, I seen They truly loved each other...

Thanos then Intentionally told quill he killed her because He knew he would lose his shit...

I do agree its kinda of Dumb moment...but it was set up

I also think there might be more to this moment in Avengers 4...as you said, Its a DUMB move and IMO an extremely ODD scene because its such a mistake at such an important time...Literally almost every single person that talks about the movie remembers that part and calls Quill an idiot and says hes responsible for everyone dying...

I just cant imagine Marvel Studios putting in this kind of Scene, that is so ODD, so Important without it not having Great Meaning...I think somehow in Avengers 4, that Moment and scene is going to be revisited and some kind of twist is gonna happen...

I could be wrong, It could just be an ODD scene...

reply

I can see where you're coming from...because it was a bit of a strange scene. I don't know about some kind of twist happening, but I bet its brought up again...that someone addresses it...maybe even Gamora herself.

reply

"When Quill was forced to try and Kill Gamera, Thanos was there,"

No way! Gamera was in this movie, I'm definitely going to see it right away. Does Godzilla or Mothra make an end credit appearance?

reply

no but there was this really awesome part where Star Lord and Thanos are fighting to The Death, Star Lord is about to Stab Thanos with this Giant Green Spear....they suddenly realize their Moms have the same name, ALL fighting stops and they decide to be best friends....

I even hear in the sequel Thanos is going to be Suicidal because his new best friend is dead, and cares about nothing But Bringing "Clark", I mean Star Lord Back from the dead....

lol
