Anyone else dislike Dark Matter but like this?

It seems like a lot of people on this board prefer Dark matter but honestly, I liked this one much better. Dark Matter to me felt very 90s/ early 00s. This one at least felt like it had a chance to grow into something original, even if it isn't right now.

Both show have cliches but the ones in Dark Matter just seem more...obnoxious and obvious? Or maybe they just happen to be ones that personally annoy me the most. The 'tough guy' who wants to shoot everyone, the female android, the 'mysterious' teenage girl...none of those are things I have much desire to see ever again. Both shows have fairly typical "sexy, kickass" women but I for some reason way preferred Dutch to Two or whatever her name was. Perhaps it was the actress' acting or just small differences in the writing. I also prefer the two brothers to the male characters we got in Dark Matter, and the setting seems more interesting.

Hmm, I only watched ten minutes of Dark Matter's episode 2, partly accidential. So I can't really have an opinion on that. However, it was just a bunch of people talking. It seemed very explanatory to me, so even the dumbest in the audience can follow. Both shows are Canadian, it seems. Some of my favorite Sci-Fi shows lately are Canadian, so I guess they are both good picks to watch in the future.

What interested me about Killjoys is that there is some slight similarity to "The Moon is a harsh misstress", which might (or may not) become an interesting plot element. I did find some of the locations, especially the silo/bunker in the opening were bad picks. And the main actress barely deserves to be called that; her accent should be dropped. It doesn't suit her, but I guess there is a story point to that, later. After all English still sounds pretty posh, so she's probably nobility and her parents were assassinated or some similar crap. We'll see soon.

I can't say I dislike the show, but I'm a bit weary of it becoming anything special. So far the characters are way too generic and a bit boring, to be honest. But we've only started with Episode one, so perhaps that is meant to have some character development, in the future. Personally, I'm looking forward to the 4th season of "Continuum", which has some real potential, albeit it bit of a weak 3rd season.

I just saw dark matters and it was so cliché I had some trouble with it. I am a bit intrigued with the idea that their amnesia was purposeful and their bio's contrived by the mult-corps??? Why? Just a thought..

Problem is that there are so many really great series these days and not just the premiums like Game of Thrones or P Dreadful and many more. We have,,Justified to Orphan Black(awsome),to well, way too many to list here. Syfy has a lot of work to do..some of their stuff are imports, but they have a tendency to,just not be quite as good as some...but they have some good stuff too. Don't want to rag too much.

This, right off the bat feels more fun,the good guys winning..more like Warehouse 13,maybe. I may have thought of it because of Ashmore? BTW he is not scheduled for the last three episodes..what does that mean..he isn't going to make it past those 1st 7? I like him and his bro,the other cast members I'm not familiar with. But a lot of the series that are so good that I was thinking of are really not feel good shows, they are excellent, but not feel good. We need one! This has lots of incrediable fighting that would kill anyone in the real world, completely impossible, but fun to watch. And you are right..there is something that is drawing me that DM doesn't have...at least yet. I hope they are not borrowing from Alien with the robot who may be a plant by the corps..

It is always a bit disconcerting that the future has devolved so,,better tech, but socially and morally we have returned to the Roman era of blood sport etc... But my point isn't that they are really making social commentary, but I think just trying to have a good time. A wierd kind of dissonance I know.

But I like it a lot better..a lot...I feel more connected to the cast and I haven't even seen the ending yet..lol...the other one had characters that at least so far I don't care about. The dickless wonder, big gun toting idiot could have been used for some comedy, but they didn't or haven't yet gone there..Not caring about the them isn't good...that could change, but you really want your audience connected to the players or your sunk.

This has new worlds to visit..you can do anything with that..it opens up things for a lot of fun if they have the money and creative talent. If you ever saw Faescape..it was so much fun with all the alien characters and wacky beyond anything..iive been waiting for another one like it,but so far...nothing even close...this won't either, but they have the opportunity. It just,so far doesn't look like wierd aliens is their thing.

They are contriving some things..ie the bros having silly conflicts just so we have scenes of them argueing..I love him, want to save him,but...we must have petty arguement and flex our muscles for?? Thing is it worked and had some tongue in cheek humor..so good thing here. It is a tight wire walk with writing.. so many things have to come together to make it work and look good, sound good blah,blah..

The ending kind of had a crescendo of things coming together, suspense building, with info being given to the audience about several things, tech, story etc..iand. A mystery of sorts about why the assassin was spared when she broke the oath.. And who she is? It worked...

Much better show! Or more fair, better pilot.

I don't dislike Dark Matter, but I like this MORE. Killjoys hooked me immediately while Dark Matter is something I'm willing to invest more time into in hopes of a big Aha! down the road.

... and yes, I DO realize that these are JUST shows.

I liked both, however...

If I had to make a prediction, I'd say that Dark Matter has the best shot at going past the first season. Not that I expect it to get more then two seasons at the most, but Killjoys just strikes me as the kind of action-oriented show that won't last.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want them to get canceled, nor do I think they deserve to be canceled, I'm just being realistic. Sci-fi is a tough sell today, even on a channel dedicated to science fiction. At least I think it's still supposed to be a science fiction channel. It's hard to tell with all the other crap they show.

This is a THREADED message board. Please reply to the proper post!

I like both so far. It's really too early to say much more than that. And it's not as if cliches and tropes can't be good if used well. Not everything has to be original.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I JUST started to watch KillJoys (like all SYFY shows, they are poorly marketed so I find out like.. the LAST f'ing minute about them).

Dark Matter was supposed to be hot, but wtf? I am sitting here JUST about to post a thread about how I like THIS show (WTF?) but Dark Matter was kinda... meh...

*EDIT: Dark Matter finally developed a sense of humor, not expecting that at all quite honestly. Episode three is where they officially kick off, it seems. ;)

I agree with you. I finally came around to watching current Dark Matter and Killjoys episodes. And Killjoys second episode was making things worse. That whole rescue mission (or exchange) was unbelievable from the start and rushed to no end. The characters are so "specialised" (the soldier, the assassin, the wrench), it is painful to watch their forced interaction. And when there is action it feels silly in Killjoys. Their magazines are empty, so they drop their rifles? How did they get all their gear back and dressed after being napped anyway? The thing I can hold in favor for Killjoys is that they just barely established the three as a team (took them long enough and was cumbersome).

So far they are dancing around the who's and how's of the story. Killjoys could potentially be interesting, but with these flat characters and shallow storyline (so far) they are dangerously close to ruining it for me. I'll probably watch the next two episodes and make up my mind then. I love all Sci-Fi shows, they can even be badly written, as long as they are still cheesy fun. But with Killjoys there is a chance to make serious Sci-Fi. And I feel that chance could be lost on the show. I'm not sure what it is trying to be.

reply

So you like firefly then.
I cant make up my mind just yet. I am just so glad we have a few scifi shows after such a long absence and all the cancellations. Almost human although scifi is not a good ole fashioned scifi show which is canceled but continuum is going to end next season and that is not one either and for the life of me I cant understand why they use the wild west set on earth when its supposed to be a space based show and alien races and all that..

Really didn't like killjoy, there is no mysteries to it. Besides the setting being in the future and in space, it doesn't really have the soul of a sci-fi series. It's just another cop show but in space and it just doesn't work for me.
