Anyone else dislike Dark Matter but like this?

It seems like a lot of people on this board prefer Dark matter but honestly, I liked this one much better. Dark Matter to me felt very 90s/ early 00s. This one at least felt like it had a chance to grow into something original, even if it isn't right now.

Both show have cliches but the ones in Dark Matter just seem more...obnoxious and obvious? Or maybe they just happen to be ones that personally annoy me the most. The 'tough guy' who wants to shoot everyone, the female android, the 'mysterious' teenage girl...none of those are things I have much desire to see ever again. Both shows have fairly typical "sexy, kickass" women but I for some reason way preferred Dutch to Two or whatever her name was. Perhaps it was the actress' acting or just small differences in the writing. I also prefer the two brothers to the male characters we got in Dark Matter, and the setting seems more interesting.

The exact opposite. The characters are poorly acted and the overall show looks like they were working with no budget to produce it. Dark Matter is everything this show wanted to be, but it failed in every way. Way below my standards to watch more than the pilot.

3/10 for the effort.

-The music is absolutely horrible. Normally the music in TV shows don't bother me, but in this show the music is just garbage. I don't know who chose the music for this show, but that person needs to be shot. The music is so bad it completely kills the onscreen action.

Really? I thought I was the only one! I just started my own THREAD on the Toxic music score.
The kiddees seem to like it. Are the demographics all Millennials and younger for this show. It that it?

You're my friend.

This show is weak and the “music” makes it unwatchable.

This review of both shows heading into S2 pretty much reflects my thoughts exactly. I think my main issue with Dark Matter is its overabundance of bland characters that I just don't really care about.

That review is pretty perfect! "Sprightly" is an awesomely accurate description of the tone of Killjoys. (:

I gave Dark Matter a whole season to grab me and it just never kicked in for me. Also, I just couldn't stand a couple of the characters. So even though Joe Mallozzi has a charming blog, I have given Dark Matter a pass for this season.

I just delight in Killjoys though! So happy it is back.

Thought I was the only one. I love Killjoys, it's more action packed and just overall better. Though, I fear Dark Matter will last longer since more people prefer it over Killjoys.

reply

I'm expecting both shows will probably last the same amount of time, given how they're joined at the hip on SyFy's schedule, unless one's ratings fall off dramatically.

I still really enjoy both, even though I do prefer Dark Matter.

I watched the whole of season 1 of dark matter, and the first ep of season 2, couldnt remember who was who, and didnt care much for any of the characters, in fact the only characters I remember is the doctor from Lost Girl and Wil Wheaton

I think with so many characters and so much going on it was too muddled, and for me it was bubble gum tv, put on didnt want to think too much, but kept forgetting what had happened, and didnt care enough to find out. The body swap thing and numbers then names, and I was so indifferent to them that they all blurred into one, stereo typical pretty people

Killjoys however didnt waste time on the back storys etc, I admit to coming late to the Killjoy party as Space bounty hunters sounded terrible to me, so first watched episode 4 I think, where it was D'avins first hunt as a killjoy and the body ended up being squashed, I liked it sky plussed it for the next week and every week got better, so I had to get all the back eps.

I never felt confused with Killjoys, the characters stand out, everyone is different and has a clear place

Episode 5 was the one that really hooked me, the creepy spaceship and the crazy old man

I think Killjoys benefits from fewer characters and ones that are written really well, you remember them, and all the side characters and you dont feel over loaded with pointless information

I was eagerly awaiting both DM and KJ even before they aired their very first episode; and while both shows are on the cheap side (and even some of the actors, like DM's Anthony Lemke, made a few jokes about this in various interviews), I found them enjoyable enough to have great anticipation for their second seasons.

For quite a while, though, I have been enjoying KJ considerably more than DM. I think KJ benefits from a faster pace, a whole lot more humor/bantering between the characters (DM is really dour most of the time), and a LOT more consistency in characters and storylines. It seems fresher, more dynamic, and more engaging. (And yes, I know it is an oxymoron, as both shows are chock-full of TV tropes and clichés.) Also, I agree with the poster who wrote that KJ seems to have more stylish camera work.

At the same time, DM seems to have CGI/FX that are an entire level above those seen in KJ: their buildings and spaceships are more elaborate and detailed (even if their design is more reminiscent of the 1990s) and rendered at what appears to be a higher resolution(?). This is a particularly sore point for me: many of KJ's f/x are almost bottom-of-the-barrel... And, of course, DM benefits greatly from having spent much of its budget on a single steady set (the Raza's interior) where most of the action takes place, while KJ seems to prefer using a larger variety of (especially external) environments, which would be (again) refreshing if they were not so poorly realized so often.

In terms of the season opening episodes, both series put forth something a bit flawed. KJ's 2.1 was very good, but 2.2 came across as muddy. The creators introduced 3 or 4 major changes/new plot lines/new characters in a single show, half of which would have needed another episode to fully flesh out, hence 2.2 turned out to be a little hurried and confused. By comparison, DM's 2.1 and 2.2 started out more coherent, but quickly devolved into a 'red wedding' whose only purpose seems to have been to work as a giant reset button for the series. I am hoping the actors playing One and Six left on their own, for greater projects. Admittedly, I have found their characters more and more annoying (especially after having re-watched the entire S1 before the new season), and I suspect this feeling was shared by many viewers (which is presumably why they were written out?), but I hate when actors fall victim to flaws in the script. It was certainly not the fault of Roger Cross and Marc Bendavid that they were required to play hard-core intergalactic criminals with the personalities of angst-ridden high school teenagers...

Regardless, I am really looking forward to the rest of the new season from BOTH shows. I just wish DM were a bit easier to watch. Its characters often act out of character from one episode to the next, and they are so saddled with constant self-doubt and immature self-pity, it is hard to believe they are the toughest mercenaries of the Galaxy when they keep acting like rejects from The Breakfast Club...

I lose track with Dark Matter too easily, Im not as involved with it so dont worry too much

I find numbers and names and face changing and double crossing too much

Killjoys is easier, Dutch has a dark past, but we see a lot of that. D'avin is our introduction to the world, hes new to it and he asks the questions the others always explain whats happening
Johnny is the heart and the moral side his interest in the religion helps us understand that as well
They are very flawed characters as well, which makes them easier to connect to

Dark Matter I dont feel connected to any character at all

I didn't care to watch Dark Matter but gave it a try last month and found it enjoyable. It was more difficult to watch, though, because I didn't like One for much of the season and he was front and center.

Well, this spoiler might be good news to you, then: As of right now, One is dead. He got shot and killed in the first episode of season 2. The other characters all know he's dead, because it was even reported on the news that his body was identified by DNA--- so it sounds like he's permanently dead.

With sci-fi, you never know, tho...
