Zootopia vs. Moana

Okay, so I bet at this point a lot of us have seen both of these movies by now. Both are regarded as new Disney classics for the era. And yet I know many people are willing to pit these two against each other to see which they think is better. In my opinion, they're vastly different. One's kind of a neo-noir action crime thriller with hints of comedy, and the other is a musical with some action and comedy thrown in. But since this is pretty much inevitable, I might as well hear which one you guys think is better in a number of fields: writing/story, characters, acting, humor, animation, music, and so on. This is more just an opinionated thing than anything.

Well I'll say you'll likely get compteing answers depending on what fan or what film chooses to post rather than a honest thoughtful reply in what is really the best quality. Also answers will likely vary now than when a film as time to cool down.

As for myself I'd have to say this. If music, slapstick-humor,visuals and a more by the numbers film are what is most meaningful to you I'd say you'll likely like Moana more. But if you prefer a more developed world, great voice acting, story, and a much more serious and relevant tone. You'll likely enjoy Zootopia more.

I posted this in another thread, but after just seeing Moana, I think, overall (story, voice acting, animation), Zootopia is definitely the winner. Kubo and the two strings is a close second with Moana coming in at 3rd best over all, for me.

I LOVE MUSICALS, and Moana made me feel so nostalgic. my nephews were definitely entertained (which, let's face it, is one of the biggest factors) but the story was just not as well developed for me. This mixed with The Rock's voice acting...I don't know what it was about it that irritated me (I actually adore Dwayne Johnson) but maybe his voice just doesn't match the design of Maui?? I don't know. It just didn't work for me or my sister in law.

The animation was ridiculously stunning and I loved Moana, herself, but if I have to choose which animated movie left me wowed this year, it would have to be Zootopia (this is because it wasn't a musical). ZT was a film I didn't even see in theaters because the "talking animals" theme didn't interest me. And yet here I am now singing it praises lol

Moana will still surely go down as a classic. 2016 has been a wonderful year for animation.

Unfortunately in the case of Zootopia a lot of people didn't watch it in theaters because of poor marketing. Many just passed it off as a silly comedy with taking animals and never thought anything else of it. Turns out it wasn't really that much of a comedy, yes it had funny parts but the film had a much more serious tone! And others just didn't know anything about it.

Of all the markets I've seen trailers from only Japan really showed the more adult, serious side of Zootopia and gave that face the film justice it deserved.

Oddly enough I've heard a LOT of people say pretty much the same thing where they didn't see it in the theater but have since seen it on Blu-Ray or Netflix, praise it and are disappointed they didn't see it in the theater. Twitter has literary hundreds of tweets with #Zootopia everyday still.

This is probably why it made a billion worldwide...

I'm talking about in the United States mostly as this is a factual comment I've heard multiple times. And outside of the USA where I actually live currently I know many that have expressed the same! My point was the film could of made more with proper marketingand not depending solely on word of mouth!

No reason for the snark!

*proper marketing

A "factual comment" except for the fact that Zootopia made over $340 million domestically, making it one of the top 10 highest grossing animated films of all time and currently the 6th highest grossing film of the year...

I think you're missing my point. I realize it is the 3rd biggest film of the year! But it could of made even more state side of the marketing would of been better! And also I am seeing many say they are surprised how good the film is and wished they would of watched it when it was released.

I think as far as merits, they're about equal. So I think it all comes down to opinion at this point. For me, I put Moana ahead. I prefer musicals with Disney animation. Not that I don't love Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph, etc, I just tend to like the musicals more. I also really liked the story and the characters, and the animation was simply awe-inspiring. So I liked Moana more, but as far as objective quality, I'd say they're about equal.

Moana was great, but I still think Zootopia is slightly better.

I'm going to say that Moana was great as far as nostalgia goes, as it really made me think about the old Disney musicals I grew up with as a kid. But let's face it, Zootopia is not only great, but it's also taking Disney into a whole new territory of social issue storytelling and it did it with humor and action and in a way that I think both adults and kids can take something away essential away from it.

Trying to create a funny, engaging YouTube channel. If you guys check it out, hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

I agree; Moana was so nostalgic and gave me so many feels lol but it wasn't something new Or groundbreaking, WHICH IS COMPLETELY FINE. But 2016 was a year that other films that were completely unique in terms of originality. I've said it before, this was a great year for animation.

I definitely prefer Moana. Zootopia wasn't bad, but for some reason I don't like it as much as the rest of the world.

Moana is better than Zootopia, overall.
