Moana vs. Sing vs. Trolls. Which will win the box-office?

Three animated musicals released within the holiday months of November-December. If you had to bet money, how would you predict their box-office rank?

I'll go first.

1. Sing-Universal has already screened this in a couple of different events and the reaction has been off the charts. Illumination's red-hot streak looks to even intesify.

2. Moana and Trolls- this could go either way. Moana is definitely more expensive, but Disney has proven how they can continuously make expensive films that underperform. Once again they have Thanksgiving week and that was avwipeout last year with their Pixar release The Good Dinosaur.

The much-cheaper DreamWorks Trolls is the darkhorse that may surprise. It's exactly the type of irreverent film that audiences can't seem to get enough of these days...plus it's a musical too?

Oh dear...when I started this thread almost 2 1/2 months ago I soooooo wanted to be wrong about my prediction of Sing taking the holiday crown. My gut and knowledge of box-office history lead me to this prescient conclusion.

reply

LOL...there's been so many deleted posts in this thread from those that became embarrassed after the fact when the writing became clearer on the wall.

reply

You do realize QueenFanUSA that EVERY single "deleted" post in this thread is by an administrator, NOT a poster. That means that an IMDB administrator deleted the posts. Therefore, no user deleted his or her own posts because he or she was "embarrassed". If a user deletes his or her own post, it will specifically say "This message has been deleted by the poster". If an IMDB administrator deletes the post, it specifically says "This message has been deleted by an administrator."

I wish I didn't have to say "I told you so." but...

reply

And why would you say I told you so? Because Sing hasn't even come out yet, so I wouldn't be tooting your own horn so early....

reply

@Zaph

As someone who likes to cite box office "history"...you have to see the writing on the wall at this point.

C'mon now.

Is it still too early for me to say it?

I don't know...I just kinda looked at Illumination's track record and went with my gut, Zaph.

Hard to believe I started this prediction thread over 3 months ago...my how time flies!

Anyway, Scott Mendelson from Forbes weighed in this morning that if Sing just follows an average holiday multiple it will get to The Lorax's 210 million domestic total. He also pointed out how Moana will surely not match Toy Story 2's total after losing 900(!) theaters this weekend.

At this point 210 million seems out of reach with it looking to be rather anemic for Moana especially as it continues to lose screens.

reply

Given how theres zero competition for kids until lego batman, this will have a better than average multiple. Could reach 250 million domestic, maybe even 300 million.

Got an angry message from a disney fanboy for calling it like it is.

reply

Yeah...until Lego, Sing will have the family market to itself. It's a shame it couldn't be Moana.

reply

Based on all the numbers we have so far, Moana made more money than Trolls and Sing. That might change but so far Moana is in the lead :)

reply

Sing has only been out for a couple of weeks worldwide.

reply

Numbers for yesterday are in and Moana actually INCREASED a little from the numbers on the 26th. That's got to at least encourage you a little as far as its legs are concerned. If it doesn't, then I don't know what could, considering every other movie in the Top 10 dropped from the 26th to yesterday, INCLUDING Sing and Rogue One.

reply

Looks like it will be:

1. Sing
2. Moana
3, Trolls

Moana has made $190 million after 3 days. BH6 made about $180 million after 35 days. Moana should be good for another $40 to $50 million at the box office to finish at $230 to $240 million.

Sing had a terrific hold on Tuesday and is at $93 million. If it doesn't drop a lot next week it will probably edge out Moana domestically.

It's going to be more than an "edge", unfortunately. Both domestically and worldwide, Sing is going to blow Moana out of the water(no pun intended).

Yeah...it was released a month earlier but my it's about to pass it at lightning speed.

reply

No matter which one makes more money you will say:
"Sing cost half as much as Moana so anyway it made more profit and Moana is a flop just like every other Disney movie ever while Illumination is making only huge hits and Despicable Me 3 will be more successful than even Frozen so Frozen will soon be considered an undeperformer compared to the successful Illumination films, and soon Disney films will crawl to make $100 million while Illumination will be making billions of dollars with every new film".

reply

Moana will end up winning anyway.

Adventure is out there!

reply

I don't think so. At. it's current rate, Sing will pass Moana domestically sometime next week.

reply

You do realise that the holidays are coming to an end next week?

Adventure is out there!

reply

No...a huge percentage of schools are still out until Jan. 9.

Out of curiosity, which school districts are closed until January 9? The school district I work for (which is the largest in the county) and all of the other school districts near me go back on January 3.

reply

Don't schools open up a few days after New Year weekend is over? If schools indeed remain closed until January 9, the number must be very few. I'm not an American so I don't know about this.

Don't forget that kids in the southern hemisphere are in the middle of summer break.

reply

Moana will end up winning anyway .

Again?

reply

No need to make 5-10 posts saying "I told you so!!" One's more than enough

reply

@melmannn

There are a number of posts that have been deleted from this thread that mocked me and asked if this was a "joke thread" so I would have had even more "I Told You So's" than I do now.

😉

reply

Well, Sing will win, but Moana's still a hit (and not a box-office disappointment that you so desperately trying to spin it as). Worldwide, I absolutely have no clue.
