Moana vs. Sing vs. Trolls. Which will win the box-office?

Three animated musicals released within the holiday months of November-December. If you had to bet money, how would you predict their box-office rank?

I'll go first.

1. Sing-Universal has already screened this in a couple of different events and the reaction has been off the charts. Illumination's red-hot streak looks to even intesify.

2. Moana and Trolls- this could go either way. Moana is definitely more expensive, but Disney has proven how they can continuously make expensive films that underperform. Once again they have Thanksgiving week and that was avwipeout last year with their Pixar release The Good Dinosaur.

The much-cheaper DreamWorks Trolls is the darkhorse that may surprise. It's exactly the type of irreverent film that audiences can't seem to get enough of these days...plus it's a musical too?

I started this thread on September 21 and today is October 24.

Oh my, what a difference a month makes. The laughter about Troll's box office prospects has become strangely muted.

I hate to say "I told you so!" but...

You haven't been proven yet - it's only just opened in some of the foreign markets. It's still a question of "We'll see" when it opens in US markets. And, in either case, it's opening a whole two weeks before Moana. Can't you just be happy for another studio? Can't there be more than one for you? Disney will be fine - you worry too much!

OhNooos

I'll have you know that I root for more than just WDAS.

I also champion Pixar.

I support great animated films. DreamWorks hardly have any and Illumination have absolutely none.

Sorry, I don't believe you. Pixar and Disney are part of the same machine and that's who you root for, no matter what they produce. Directors and writers for Disney films also work on Dreamworks films. Do they suddenly become "bad" because they've gone across town? I don't think so. This is bias on your part. You would root for those Dreamworks films if they had the Disney/Pixar label. I've also noticed that you are not on the board of Kubo and you've never mentioned Kubo in all of your posts. My guess is that's because Laika isn't currently a financial threat to the Disney/Pixar corporation at this point, and the fiscal concern is something you raise often.

My point to you is that Disney is doing fine and you don't need to be so worried and competitive. There's room in the market for more than a couple of companies. And, if you are a true fan, then you can relax and open yourself to the many wonderful animations out there. I suspect that as a Disney/Pixar nerd, when you go to see a film made by another studio, your bias prevents you from appreciating them. Try to go with the open eyes of a child and forget the corporate wars. You'll enjoy more.

It looks like the laughter about Trolls in this thread has officially ended as it debuted to $900,000 Thursday previews. That's $250,000 more than Home and that film went on to a $52 million weekend. This may be on track for a $60 million domestic OW.

Hate to say it...but...I told you so!

I will never understand why you worry over the earnings of every Disney film and why you seem so jealous if another studio does well. I'm glad Trolls is doing well. I hope it's a hit. I also hope Moana is a hit and I think it will be. It looks to have all the classically Disney elements that audiences love and have come to expect.

This whole competition thing is weird to me. I guess if you have money riding on it, it matters. There was an article claiming that Trolls was either doing better than Dr Strange or not being slaughtered by Dr Strange the first night it opened. And that was described as a "disappointment".

Anyone want to readjust their Trolls prediction?

reply

Trolls doing well? Good for Dreamworks. Nowdays they have a hard time to make a hit that isn't a sequel. It might make around $180-190M in USA, just like the Croods. Worldwide I could see it getting to $400M.
But then, I think Moana will open at the $60 million range, will gross over $250 million to the US and might get close to $300M, and as for worldwide, I think it will make just over/under $700M.
Which I don't think is the case with Sing, at least so far.

Oh and also, Disney is having an awful year, really! Too bad they are going to be the first studio ever to gross $7 billion worldwide in a singe year.

180-90 million domestic? I think that sounds about right.

Anyone else want to readjust?

reply

LOL!

The mockers are strangely silent.

Okay, then.

It's simply not possible for Trolls to beat Moana, we're talking about a Disney film here and almost always they make 500,000,000+ usually worldwide. One of Disney's most recent films Zootopia beat over a billion dollars in revenue and became the top 20 or so highest grossing films of all time.
