Olivia Munn found Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg's lack of X-Men knowledge "very frustrating"

Although the series produced a number of memorable instalments throughout its 20-year history, fans of Marvel’s mutant superheroes are unlikely to be shedding too many tears over 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise coming to an end following the studio’s recent acquisition by Disney.

With fans already looking forward to the inevitable Marvel Studios rebiit, the final instalment, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, arrived with little anticipation, and unsurprisingly it tanked hard at the box office, where it is currently on course to become the biggest superhero flop of all time. Yikes.

A lot of the criticism towards the Fox X-Men movies has been aimed at Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, who have perhaps had the biggest influence on the studio’s handling of the franchise over the years, and now X-Men: Apocalypse actress Olivia Munn has chimed in, stating that she was “very frustrated” by Singer and Kinberg’s lack of knowledge about the X-Men mythos during her time on the 2016 movie.

“No, because I get like that too,” said Munn when asked if it frightens her how crazy some people get over comic to movie adaptations. “I think that people wouldn’t get so crazy if it was just a really great movie. When I was doing X-Men, I was actually surprised that the director and the writer didn’t even know that Psylocke had a twin brother. And I had to talk to them about a lot of different things about Psylocke and some other parts of the world that they didn’t know and that, as a fan, was very frustrating.”

Thankfully, with X-Men and Fantastic Four now back at Marvel Studios, fans can rest assured that a lack of knowledge of the characters and world will no longer be an issue.

Super unsurprising.

Now to be fair to them, apart from their “one or two” misfires, Singer and Kinberg did manage to make some fine X-Men films. (By no means comic accurate, but fine films nonetheless.) I mean, the impact the first X-Men made cannot be overestimated. However, it seems obvious to me that the two weren’t concerned with following the source material. In fact, Singer WAS against sticking to the source material.

Sure, Simon has gone on record to say that growing up he was a fan of the comics as much as the next guy. Singer, on the other hand, had no knowledge of the comics when he was approached to direct this film and it’s quite clear he never made an effort to do his research afterwards (other than apparently familiarizing himself with the classic 90’s animated series). With that in mind, inevitably some of the choices these two made with the films were going to be, well, lousy. (Worth noting, is being unfamiliar with the comics is the least of Singer’s problems of course.)

Granted, I would rather have a quality film that captures the spirit of comics but ultimately does its own thing over a mediocre and soulless film that sticks closely to the source material (a la Watchmen). Still, you can’t deny they did some of the characters+storylines in this franchise pretty dirty.

I really liked Munn as Psylocke btw. Kudos to her.

Olivia Munn SLAMS disgraced director Bryan Singer saying he went MISSING for ten days on the set of X-Men due to a 'thyroid issue'

Thyroid issue? Is that what they're calling benders these days?

Interesting.

Okay, I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure even with inflation X-Men Dark Phoenix made way more money than Howard the Duck. Anyway I actually am one of those fans who look forward to Marvel's take. I like Gambit and Brian Singer hated him so much that the character only ended up in one film by Fox where he's barely in it and doesn't get to do much. I also hated Brian Singer's take on Rogue. Have nothing against the actress but I don't like how he wrote her. Then again I'm pretty sure Brian Singer was also against doing stuff like the Shiar, Star Jammers, Mojovision, Arcade, and Mr. Sinister. They should be introduced in future movies. I know a Mojovision character was introduced in Deadpool 2 but he wasn't an important character.

Their X-Men movies were good in their own right, as a separate thing from the comics.

Do you know what I find frustrating? Olivia Munn's complete lack of acting ability. She was lucky to even be in the movie, she's a B-movie actress at best.

reply

Olivia Munn should be thankful she's even getting offers to act in Hollywood. Unless she wants to be known as the "beard" for closeted men.

But Bryan Singer gave us X2, which was an incredible film.

And Olivia Munn was one of the worst actors in any xmen film to date. It doesn't matter how much she knew about Psylocke's backstory.

This article is old, but it just sounds like more propaganda to disparage what fox did, and to pump up the mcu. I hate people are retroactively acting like X2 and DoFP weren't fucking amazing.
