CONCERTS- your First, your Worst, your Greatest & your Latest.

First Ray Charles & the Raylettes in central park, NYC. with special guest Billy Preston. It was part of the great Schaefer beer "Summer in the Park" series in Central park, NYC. It was great b/c you bring your blanket, your pic-a-nic basket, your bottle of whatever, and pay your 2 BUCKS and enjoy the show under the stars.

I was 14 years old. I fell in love with the smokin' hot Raylettes. And I was instantly a live music fan forever.

p.s. Billy Preston had THE biggest afro in the history of afros, lol! I swear it had to be at least 4 feet in diameter.

Worst - Bad Company/ Jacksonville, Florida 1976 .
Th e band was good, but drunken, underage, teenage, redneck, idiots kept fighting, throwing empty beer bottles, and shooting off fireworks until the band had had enough and cut the show short.

Latest Bob Dylan/ at Univ of Alabama homecoming.

Greatest Led Zep at the historic Madison Square Garden concert the night their concert receipts were ripped off.

Your turn...

Before I mention mine, I just know that it is going to be difficult, if not impossible, for anyone to top the OP's Led Zep Madison Square Garden concert. Can you spot yourself in the audience in The Song Remains the Same?

Mine:

First - Jethro Tull, Standard Bank Arena, Johannesburg. 1993.

Worst - had a few bad ones. Richard Thompson (of Fairport Convention fame) was probably the worst. Not a bad performance, just dull. He only did acoustic stuff and there was a sameness to it after a while. Enmore Theatre, Sydney, Australia, 2001. Most disappointed I've been at any concert was the two times I've seen Bob Dylan live.

Latest - Little Birdy (Australian band), The Metro, Sydney.

Greatest - The White Stripes. Enmore Theatre, Sydney. 2003 - on their Elephant tour.

Not yet, but lord knows I keep trying. 

You know, sometimes Led Zep used to be criticized for being arrogant and aloof, but I gotta say my respect for them grew immensely when they STILL took the stage and absolutely rocked even after they had been ripped off for a hefty sum. And that 45 minute drum solo by JPJ was awesome!

First: Led Zepplin, 1970, Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto. I was 14 and "at the library." Nothing will ever top that.

Worst: Can't think of one that sticks out.

Greatest: See First

Latest: Eagles, 2013, ACC, Toronto

Coming up: The Who Turns 50, April, ACC, Toronto

I thought The Who at the photo shoot last night (He is Racist Fire) was great. 'Pete' really looked like Pete, but 'Roger' looked as much like Roger as 'Plant' looked like Plant. They seem to have a problem with blond, long, thick curly-haired front men.

Damn, a lot of old people here. Any millennials out there?

My father took me to see King Crimson in some dark nightclub when I was 12 or so and I was bored out of my skull. Would like to see that show now. The first concert I had asked to go by myself was Pearl Jam at MSG in 1998. It was early September and the night Mark McGwire hit home run 62. Everybody in the crowd celebrated when Eddie announced it.

Latest was the Arcs in December 2015, Black Keys' Frontman Dan Auerbach's side band. Solid little show and got to meet him afterwards

Best was probably Rage Against the Machine in 2008 Rock the Bells Tour. I never thought I would see that lineup and they absolutely murdered the show. Everybody in the crowd lost their mind and they sounded, I presume, every bit as good as they did in 1992

Worst. I have never seen any awful shows, Stone Temple Pilots reunion show in 2008 was pretty flat. By the numbers, not a lot of inspiration there.

Over the last year, I have also seen U2, Faith No More and a few others.

First: Cheap Trick, 1979

Worst: Roger Waters, sometime in the late 80's

Latest: Megadeth with Suicidal Tendencies, Children of Bodom and Havok, night before last.

Greatest: So hard to say, saw so many of the "greats" in the 80s.

reply

First: Bad Company & Damn Yankees 1989

Worst: Meatloaf 2014 (we walked out)

Latest: Mumford & Sons 2014

Greatest: U2 Actung Baby 1992 & The Wall 2012 (tied)

reply

Worst: Meatloaf 2014 (we walked out)

Saw him in Poughkeepsie around 2009-good show! However, others in the audience were concerned that his performance wouldn't be good. Seems he is rather inconsistent in recent years.
Fortunately the night we saw him he was right-as-rain.

Was that the night Watter's World was there? Interviewing Dave Mustaine for The O'Reilly Factor?

reply

No, I think that was in NYC. I saw them in Niagara Falls.

The best concert I went to was a benefit concert in 1992 on Kauai for the victims of hurricane Iniki. It was held on the high school football field and it lasted all day. There were some Hawaiian singers I didn't know, but it was organized by Graham Nash's wife as they lived there at the time. Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Jimmy Buffet, Jackson Brown and Bonnie Raitt performed. There were no seats on the field - everyone was standing and I'm sure there was security, but I didn't see anyone. You could wander anywhere, including around the stage. I'm sure a lot of the people were pretty stoned. It was different from any concert I had been to and really great.

First- Ratt/Bon Jovi-85 maybe? Bismarck civic center. my dad was a police officer and got me backstage with 40 hot chicks.. Sambora came up and asked how the hell I got back there.. then they all took the chicks on the buses and I stole as many sprites as I could carry off the crafts table... lol

Worst- Stryper/white lion. 1988 Bismarck white lion was my favorite band at the time and they cancelled.. so was stryper and some *beep* local bar band.

Best- Kiss reunion 1996 st. paul. My favorite band all time and I waited overnight for tickets and was dead center 2nd row on the aisle... Ace ends his solo, kissed the pic and right into my hands.. greatest single day of my life other than birth of my kids..

Latest- Warrant at a rib fest in Fargo ND.. I have to get out more..

First- Def Leppard in 1983, Pyromania tour, I believe it was at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit (I was 12, long time ago!). Krokus and John Butcher Axis opened up.
Worst- Dave Matthews Band in 1998, Crash tour. At the O'rena in Orlando. They sounded terrible, we left after 4 songs.
Greatest- tie between Nirvana in November, 1993 on the In Utero tour at the Lakeland Civic Center with the Breeders and Cum as the opening acts and the Smashing Pumpkins in October, 1993 on the Siamese Dream Tour at the Edge in Orlando with Swervedriver as the opening act.

First - Sparks, Fairfield Halls, Croydon. Mid 70's. Clips on YouTube
Best - Bruce Springsteen & ESB, Wembley Arena 1981/2
Worst - Off the top of my head, Rainbow at Wembley Arena. Infamous 5 songs played and then piss off concert. Cue destruction.
Last - Springsteen, River 2016, Toronto.
