CONCERTS- your First, your Worst, your Greatest & your Latest.

First Ray Charles & the Raylettes in central park, NYC. with special guest Billy Preston. It was part of the great Schaefer beer "Summer in the Park" series in Central park, NYC. It was great b/c you bring your blanket, your pic-a-nic basket, your bottle of whatever, and pay your 2 BUCKS and enjoy the show under the stars.

I was 14 years old. I fell in love with the smokin' hot Raylettes. And I was instantly a live music fan forever.

p.s. Billy Preston had THE biggest afro in the history of afros, lol! I swear it had to be at least 4 feet in diameter.

Worst - Bad Company/ Jacksonville, Florida 1976 .
Th e band was good, but drunken, underage, teenage, redneck, idiots kept fighting, throwing empty beer bottles, and shooting off fireworks until the band had had enough and cut the show short.

Latest Bob Dylan/ at Univ of Alabama homecoming.

Greatest Led Zep at the historic Madison Square Garden concert the night their concert receipts were ripped off.

Your turn...

Latest: Black Sabbath at the United Center in January...Very impressed with this show and they played Hand of Doom for the first time since the early '70s...

Greatest: Fare Thee Well at Soldier Field last July 3rd, 4th and 5th...Went to all three shows and it was the greatest three days of my life...The Grateful Dead is my all time favorite band and to see them 20 years after I went to the last Dead show with Jerry Garcia was beyond amazing...

Worst - The Grateful Dead at Carrier Dome Syracuse, c '83...they were FINE, I was given a free ticket, in the absolute farthest rear seat of huge venue (band was smaller than ants & sound was mud back there), I was alone, stone sober, and not a big fan anyway.

Saw them as headliners at a Day on the Green that tour.Left about 3/4ths of the way thru.Ann was singing out of key the whole time & was obviously F.U.B.A.R.Nancy seemed to be just "phoning" it in.I think they were both going thru break-ups with their boyfriends/band members at the time.

I was sitting in the side seating....so I could see the stage, and the area just immediately backstage. Ann was going back there and chugging from what was obviously a liquor bottle between songs. By the end, she was just blotto. She tripped and fell on the guitarist in mid-song, which sent them both to the floor, then gets up and screams at him on stage, as if this was somehow his fault.

I left feeling like I had been completely ripped off. Worst concert ever! Such disrespect for the fans and the time/money we laid out to see her perform.

Absolutely love the idea of this thread, and enjoyed reading what others had to say.

Most have limited their selections to one, which is difficult to do, but I will do so:

FIRST: Emerson Lake and Palmer - December, 1977 Nassau Coliseum on the Works Volume II tour. They were my favorite band growing up, so as you can imagine, it was a super thrill, and a great show.

WORST: Blondie - Summer, 1979 in Asbury Park, NJ - Right before "Eat to the Beat" was released. They absolutely couldn't have cared less, and were just going through the motions. The first and only time I ever saw people walking out of a show. If I've seen other bands going through the motions, then at least they hid it well from me.

LATEST: I wasn't even going to bother, as it was in 1999, but since others listed "last" shows earlier than that, then OK. I think it was The Moody Blues in Atlantic City.

GREATEST: Heart - Winter, 1979 - Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ - Opening night of the second leg of their "Dog and Butterfly" tour. I read an article once in Rolling Stone that said any group can be the world's greatest rock'n roll band for one night. That night, I believe I saw that in Heart. I was a so-so fan of theirs until this show, when I became a big fan. It was a small venue (around 3,000), and because it was opening night of the second leg of their tour, they were pumped up. Added Bonus #1 - I think that was the first time they ever performed Zeppelin's "Rock'n Roll", which they did as an encore, and just about brought the house down. Added Bonus #2 - Coming out for the Encore, Ann Wilson gets attacked by an overzealous fan climbing onto the stage, and was subsequently pulled off by roadies, who did God-knows-what to him backstage.

First: I was 11 when I saw a local bluegrass/country outfit. They had banjos, a steel guitar and all that stuff. Other than that, I'd say Depeche Mode in 2001. It was a great concert during which I felt the rush of being a part of such a big gig for the first time.

Worst: Battles, 2008. The guitarist was so strung out on heaven's high he could barely play at all. At one point he even put away his instrument, lit a cigarette and began wandering across the stage, visibly disoriented. It was like showing a big F to the audience.

Greatest: There were many great gigs I'd attended: Autechre (three times), Aphex Twin & Krzysztof Penderecki, Amon Tobin, The Cure, Bauhaus, DJ Shadow, TV On The Radio, Massive Attack, but the greatest was David Bowie in 2002. That was in Berlin and the man performed two of his albums in their entirety: "Low" (1977) and "Heathen" (his then latest). Plus a handful of hits and some obscure songs that resulted in a 3 hour show. Mind you, he was 55 at that time. I saw Bowie a year later and it was an equally marvellous experience.

Latest: Richard Devine, 2016. An electronic music producer, a master of synthesis and a modular synthesizers virtuoso. To make matters sweeter, the concert took place in a modern Philharmonic Hall.

I'd love to see Radiohead, Boards of Canada and Timber Timbre live. And Coil but that won't happen for obvious reasons.
