CONCERTS- your First, your Worst, your Greatest & your Latest.

First Ray Charles & the Raylettes in central park, NYC. with special guest Billy Preston. It was part of the great Schaefer beer "Summer in the Park" series in Central park, NYC. It was great b/c you bring your blanket, your pic-a-nic basket, your bottle of whatever, and pay your 2 BUCKS and enjoy the show under the stars.

I was 14 years old. I fell in love with the smokin' hot Raylettes. And I was instantly a live music fan forever.

p.s. Billy Preston had THE biggest afro in the history of afros, lol! I swear it had to be at least 4 feet in diameter.

Worst - Bad Company/ Jacksonville, Florida 1976 .
Th e band was good, but drunken, underage, teenage, redneck, idiots kept fighting, throwing empty beer bottles, and shooting off fireworks until the band had had enough and cut the show short.

Latest Bob Dylan/ at Univ of Alabama homecoming.

Greatest Led Zep at the historic Madison Square Garden concert the night their concert receipts were ripped off.

Your turn...

First: Sig Transit Gloria at Fireside Bowl in Chicago. It was my freshman year at DePaul and a girl I had just met asked me to go with her down Fullerton to see a show at a bowling alley. She was cute so obviously I went with....proved to be a fantastic show that was total punk rock! I mean come on, a punk show at a seedy bowling alley- Fantastic!

Worst: Ambulance Ltd at the Double Door in Chicago. Was looking forward to this back in the day but wow it was just boring. On a bright note the opening introduced me to one of my favorite bands, Autolux.

Greatest: The Fall at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. Got there early and had a spot next to the door that opens to the stage. Holy hell, Mark E. Smith walked right past me! That's like the cultural equivalent of Ian Curtis or John Lydon walk right by you!

Latest: Courtney Barnett at the Casbah in San Diego. Total detached punk rock. I have to say I was pleasantly suprised. That Aussie chick can out on a great show.

First: Molly Hatchet
Worst: Aerosmith.
Best: So many good ones. Sting, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughan (saw him about 6 months before he died), Neil Young, Dire Straits, Springstein (not really my thing, but he was amazing live), Leonard Cohen, Buddy Guy, Tool, Alice in Chains, Queens of the Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine (sadly, I saw them in 92 shortly after their self titled album came out. I had no idea who they were at the time, but they amazed me)
Latest: Slipknot

Those were concerts? I think you missed the definition of a concert. Those sound like bar acts.

First: I was 16 and went to see The Cure, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, at the NEC Birmingham. The girl who took me was total goth, 2 years older than me (and, as I thought, very sophisticated) and it was one of the best nights of my life. Got more firmly into the Goth scene after that seeing Sisters of Mercy and The Mission within the same year.

Worst: Probably Oasis, Sydney - must have been about 1997. They kept us waiting for over an hour. They weren't talking to each other so they came on, unenthusiastically played a few songs, absolutely no talking to the crowd, and stalked off the stage after an hour. Everybody was really disappointed.

Best: Seeing U2 play in their hometown, Dublin, at Croke Park in 2004. Snow Patrol opened. It was an incredible atmosphere - I think it had been years since they'd played at home. There was 3 of us, and we couldn't find anywhere to stay, so after the concert we went to see a late night movie (Mr & Mrs Smith) so we could sleep in the theatre, and then taxi'd it to the airport and slept on the floor until our 6am flight the next morning. Seeing Bowie at a charity concert would be up there as well, 1999.

I go to Glastonbury when I can, so I'd also say: Coldplay, Kasabian, Dolly Parton and Don McLean would be my faves - as much due to fan ardour in the crowd - particularly for Dolly!

Latest: Glastonbury 2014 was the last time I saw live music as I tend to go to festivals a lot more now, but I've seen Fat Boy Slim a couple of times in the past year, if DJs count.

It's too cerebral! We're trying to make a movie here, not a film!

First - If we're talking literal first concerts ever then mine was D'Angelo around the time he was blowing up off of Brown Sugar. Don't remember it too clearly but I think I was around 5 years old maybe. Had to be in my single digits at least. But if we're talking first rock concerts ever then mine would have to be the Foo Fighters in 2011 on the Wasting Light tour, easily one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. This band called The Joy Formidable opened for them and became one of my favorite new bands easily. Then Social Distortion played after them and they killed it too. But Foo Fighters just blasted on to the stage and kept the momentum going the whole show. Did a 5 song encore and ended the show with "Everlong". Solidified them as one of the best bands doing it today.

Worst - This would have to be Radiohead. I love their music, some of their albums are some of my favorites ever. But they were just a bit too boring for me live. It was in 2012 I think and for the King of Limbs album. They mostly did songs and b-sides from that album with a few occasional hits here and there like The National Anthem or Paranoid Android (which was the only highlight of the show). They're actually very tight live. The music is almost perfectly played. It's just they're not all that energetic or fun to watch in person. Much rather listen to the albums.

Greatest - That's tough. I have a few great ones I've seen. If I had to narrow it down, it'd be between the Red Hot Chili Peppers in DC back in 2013 or last year when I saw Faith No More at MSG. I've always loved RHCP growing up as a kid, but I never knew they were that amazing of a live band as they are. These guys have some damn ENERGY. Played more hits than I expected since the tour was for their latest album, I'm With You. This show made me wanna pick up my bass the next day and get better because Flea is just so freaking awesome live on that thing. And FNM at MSG last year was killer too. Refused opened for them and I thought they were gonna steal the show. Refused is AWESOME live. Probably one of the best opening bands I've ever seen. But FNM killed it. Did all their hits, their new stuff and sounded damn near perfect. Mike Patton's vocals are great live.

Latest - Just saw Springsteen for the first time last month on The River tour like someone else here did. Him and the E Street Band are a gift from God. Amazing. And Clarence's nephew, Jake, taking after him is the star of the show next to "the Boss". Loved that they came out and played with the house lights on first. That was new to me and just cool to see. Then they ended the show the same way by doing Born To Run and Rosalita. Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to. Another one too I recently saw that I loved was Korn. They did their entire first album live and regardless of what you think of them they were pretty damn good that night. One of my favorite shows too.

First: Derringer, Little River Band, Foreigner at Philly Spectrum.

Best: Queen, twice. No one compares to the late great Freddie Mercury.

Worst: Pink. Canceled show that I drove 1 1/2 hrs to, went to the rescheduled show and she sat her ass on the stage floor. THERE IS NO SITTING while performing. She didn't get the memo.

Latest: A couple of blues bands.

First:Sha Na Na (yes,I said that!!) & some comedian I can't remember the name of opening-1975 at Circle Star Theater Redwood City,CA.

Best-a virtual tie between two.1-Peter Frampton,Lynyrd Skynyrd,Santana,The Outlaws & some opening act I can't quite remember at Oakland Coliseum July 1977 (yes, the "Freebird:The Movie" performance,3 months before the Plane Crash.Always was proud to have seen the original Skynyrd & not the glorified "tribute" band that exists nowadays) ; 2-Ted Nugent,Blue Oyster Cult,Cheap Trick,Pat Travers,& Shakin' Street at Spartan Stadium San Jose,CA August 1979

Worst:Pat Travers,SVT (Airplane Bassist Jack Casady's late 70's New Wave band) & somebody else I can't quite remember (might've been Rainbow) 1981 Cow Palace. This was just after Pat Thrall & Tommy Aldridge had left & Travers was touring as a Trio. Not having another guitar player in the band really took a lot of the life out of his performance (loved the way him & Thrall played off each other in previous concerts I'd seen)This was also the show where Travers chastised from the stage somebody who had set off an M80 in the middle of a song. You never heard an arena get SO quiet,SO quickly!!Ended up leaving half way thru "Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights)"

Latest: Too long ago to remember, but I think it might've been Deep Purple (the classic lineup reunion tour) in 1985/86.

I am very Jealous of you. I have always wanted to see the Fall live. I feel like Mark E. Smith would forever put on a good show. I can't imagine his voice changing much in his old age

First- Melt Banana I was 17 it was at Emo's in Austin and I had a blast

Worst- I saw the Jesus and Mary Chain at SXSW three years ago. It was expensive and all the guys were visibly strung out.

Best- It is a tie. I saw Pulp at Coachella and they were amazing. I remember dancing my ass off and being pretty damn happy. My other best show experience would have to be seeing My Bloody Valentine. They played all of Loveless.

Last- I saw Chelsea Wolfe play a few months ago
