I'm sorry, folks...

but I just don't consider this one of my favorite movies mostly because of the director Paul Feig (the guy who did that terrible 2016 Ghostbusters reboot). The only things I liked about the movie was the cinematography, the music, and some of the action sequences. Everything else, though, made this painfully mediocre. Not to mention WAY too mean spirited at times as opposed to being funny.

reply

Yeah, not a good movie.

It was one of those movies I wanted to like, but there was nothing there I could like.

reply

I agree. If there's a particular 2015 movie I liked, it's the Cinderella remake.

reply

The "Cinderella" remake was passable, no more, which makes it the best of all the Disney live-action remakes!

Drew Barrymore's "Ever After" from 1998 is rather better, possibly the best version of the story made by Hollywood... for what that's worth.

On the bright side, at least Spy wasn't as terrible as that Peter Pan origin story which was too fucking anachronistic and had a generic chosen one narrative and that boring Fantastic Five reboot which tried too hard to be like Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.

reply

I will give "Spy" credit for being somewhat original, because I've given up on remakes and retreads. And Peter Pan for that matter, I didn't even like the book as a kid.

reply

But it did have wonderful banter from Jason Statham referencing many of his past movie stunts but staying in character as the tough yet oblivious spy.

Also some of the chemistry is good in this film. Jude Law was great!

reply

Ok those parts I didn't mind at all actually. The only problem is that I didn't laugh at the other humorous moments.

reply

I give this a break. Its fun enough to pass time. I think McCarthy gets too much hate. I'd love to see her play against the bumbling hero type and go for something toned down, like her character's in Gilmore Girls.

reply

Wait. Those Jason Stratham over-the-top quotes were stuff he’d done in other movies? Even funnier than I thought!

reply

When I rewatch it soon, I'll jot down the ones I recognize and tie them to a film he did
xD his character added so much more fun to this movie!

reply

Share them here! He was great, and Melissa McCarthy’s insults to him were the best, especially the one about cutting off his dick and gluing it to his forehead.

reply

It’s a pretty mediocre comedy, the odd moment here or there but too bloated with some forced gags that didn’t hit, and it completely sinks at the end when all of the women, be they heroes or villains, look at each other with a ‘we’re all on the same team at the end of the day girls, men are the real enemy’

It was the first time I’d had my nose rubbed plum into woke propaganda in the theatre and I vowed to stay away from any Feig projects, and anything with these ‘comediennes’, going forwards.

reply

Sorry you had to go through that. Like in all honesty, the live action Cinderella remake from Disney was WAY better than this.
