I couldn't even tell you what was CGI and what wasn't.
I'm assuming people who say things like this are either just children or people who worked on the film, or are people letting nostalgia blind them to logic. Nothing else truly explains it. As someone who has worked in the computer industry for decades (and with graphics as well) I seriously appreciate the effort and technical aspects that went into this film. It's impressive. The scene where Baloo is floating on his back and his interaction with the water around him I thought was particularly impressive from a cgi standpoint.
That being said--the animals in no way looked real. Very few scenes did I stop and go 'Wow, that looks real.' They did a great job capturing manerisms--ears twitching, subtle movements of paws, tails, etc. The scene where Bagheera chased Shere Khan was great; the side shot looked like a real panther running. But Baloo? He looked horribly fake, as did every one of the 'wolf cubs'. Even Mowgli's mom looked bad in most scenes. Again, I appreciated it from a technical aspect--the interaction, the layering of the fur, you name it--but never did I get 'lost' in the film and think I was looking at real animals. Never did they achieve that, which is unfortunate. Probably the closest they got was some of the background monkeys and other animals.
He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.
