What's Reed's motivation? [spoilers]

Why does Reed go to the effort of doing the things that he does? Is he a psycho who gets off on control and killing, or does he really care about dispelling people's illusions about religion? I'm having trouble understanding why he would do any of this. It's not like his contrived set-up would convince a true believer, but neither did he seem to take any pleasure in killing or harming people. As others have said, it all feels quite pointless.

I guess he was just mental

reply

A pointless conjecture on my part. But I see him as someone who has correctly disected the fraudulent nature of religion, but is not altogether there. So he has contrived an experiment for which he requires live subjects. Hence, his request for the visit from the two Mormon missionaries.

reply

For the LOLs.

his motivation is to lock woman up in his basetment and torture them, because hes a psychopath

all the other things are irrelevent, he just uses it to achieve his goal.

Yes and Yes. And in the process create his own form of religion/cult.

reply

That would need believers, otherwise it is just a belief.

reply

Psychotic people don't need real-life followers or believers; they can simply imagine them.

reply

The house is built in a way none can get out, so it is designed for this purpose.

I think he is more of a serial killer, probably not the first time.

But he is not very good at killing, in a locked cage he is not the alpha, so that does not make sense.

reply

Its the story of the theologically disputatious serial killer.

Which makes it altogether new & exciting.

reply

i thought he was just a lonely guy, a widower who lost his wife in something related to religion.
when he invites missionaries it's more like he wants to find his own truth by testing them.

the serial psychopath portion of the movie is actually pretty boring.
