So tired of that stupid Final Girl thing. It makes horror movies boring

SPOILERS

I don't watch horror movies because they are all predictable. The moment everyone are introduced you know who will die and who will survive when it's ensemble.

Everyone will die. And that girl who has zero charisma, character development and walks around with sad depressing fart face acting like she is better then everyone else because she has "good heart" is gonna survive at the end. And all those fun good other people will be hunt and die.

So what is the point to root for them to survive when I know they will not make it?

I actually avoided trailer and only knew this is move about girl being kidnapped and they all then trapped in the house. And still that stupid Final Girl was in full effect. The moment they showed Melissa Barrera giving fart face when finding out they kidnap a child I knew she is Final Girl who will be only survivor.

Why do Hollywood keeps doing that and thinking this is what viewers want and root for those stupid Final Girls. I gave zero crap about Melissa Barrera character and her struggles with son. Every other character was more interesting.

I can't speak for this movie, but plenty of horror fans love the 'final girl' trope, so long as it's done well. I do.

reply

I'm genuinely glad that you enjoy it, but it's one of the reasons why horror is rarely taken seriously by other audiences. Tropes like this make horror seem predictable and frivolous, when apparently we're supposed to be scared. It's difficult not to shrug or laugh.

reply

To be honest I don't see how it differs from heroes in other genres, one's that we know won't come to any serious harm because of who they are. And not all final girls survive. Having said that, it's not something I think fits with all types of horror. Slashers, yes (obviously), sci-fi horrors (like Alien), no problem; basically I think it fits with physical threats. But I don't see it fitting with ghost stories (although The Grudge (US) pulled it off; but a) that was a ghost that actually presented a physical threat, and b) she didn't survive the sequel anyway).

@emori

"Fart face"----what a stupid, dumb-a** thing to say. Barrera's character survived because not only was she tough and smart enough to figure out how to survive, it was because she was good to that little girl/vampire monster. Nobody is complaining or whining about the "final girl" trope except your troll a**. Just say you didn't like the actress and leave it at that. This was a good horror comedy flick with an equally good cast, and I didn't see anything wrong with Barrera's performance, so all your whining about it is just your opinion, period. Oh, btw, if you hate horror films so damn much and find them so predictable, why the hell did you even watch this film? Just so you could b****, moan and whine about it? Oh, and your English is atrocious---you need to start brushing up on your English lessons some more.

reply

Barrera's character survived because writers made her Final Girl. That's it. The only reason.

Every Final Girl is basically Mary Sue. And it's boring.

I wanted to root for other characters to run and survive. But what's the point? They will all die except stupid Final Girl with her fart face.

And I'm not the only one. Abigail basically flopped. With so many familiar faces and budget of 28 millions it only made 25 millions in USA.

I liked the movie until the end.

Then don't watch them anymore ...

reply

I don't watch horror movies. Watched this one because heard it was about how kidnappers will get their asses by vampire girl. Which was rare premise.

I didn't know it would be final girl as I avoided trailer not to be spoiled completely.

I love horror movies, but I do agree, it does get kind of tiring. No one in this movie was likable. I liked the movie, alright, but didn't care for the ending. Here's some movies that the final girl doesn't survive that I know of for certain. Don't read if you don't want to be spoiled.

Wolf Creek (2005)
Eden Lake (2008)
Open Water (2003)
The Descent: Part 2 (2009)
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
The Last House on the Left (1972)
Candyman (1992)
The Descent (2005)
Absentia (2011)
Slender Man (2018)
The Devil Inside (2011)
Psycho (1960)
Psycho II (1983)
Psycho III (1986)
The Haunting (1999)
Cabin Fever (2002)
Cabin Fever (2016)
Blair Witch (2016)
Psycho (1998)

Plenty more

I would actually love to see for once writers having courage to let live secondary characters like Dan Stevens (Frank) to stay alive and stupid final girl to die. And to have 2-3 characters survive. I liked blondie also. To kill Finaly girl and let those 2 survive. But they never do that.

It's always either everyone dies and sad ending. Or final girl. And all those cool secondary characters die.

reply

The only problem with your hypothesis is that if some of the secondary characters survive, then the "final girl" dies, then the final girl is the one that is left. Hence the final girl problem still exists.

reply

All movies have tropes and cliches.

Final girls are simply the protagonists. The protagonist almost always has plot armor and saves the day, in thrillers, action, sci-fi, whatever. This is common place because a lot of audiences hate downbeat endings.

A lot of people consider it poor story telling to have a protagonist who is useless, unlikeable, who gets killed off early and so on. Hence the final girl is often 'better' than others. Smart, virtuous/noble, survives, saves the day.

Batman wins, James Bond wins. You know they'll never be in true danger. Yes every now and again at the end of a continuity they'll occasionally have the balls to kill off the main character. The same happens in horror, several final girls have been killed off.

So I don't understand the criticism.

reply

Because all horror movies became the same. I also have zero desire to root for character at the opening who runs away. Because you know 100% evil will kill him.

reply

HUMAN NATURE TO RUN FROM TERROR.

reply

Thats because that sad depressing fart face girl IS better than everyone else.

reply

She isn't. She is criminal who went to kindnap a person. She is evil and bad. NO matter her " reasons".

reply

Is she a bad person? Yes. Is she less bad person than anyone else in the crew? Yes.
