It's ridiculous how everyone suddenly started hating this movie just because the sequels were bad

That doesn't make this movie any worse. Everyone loved this movie before The Last Jedi came out.

This film wasn't bad, bad. It had some interesting ideas. It could have taken off in a better direction. Everyone looks badly on it now, because the sequels were horrible and whatever promise was in this one was squandered.

The episode movies aren't normal movies. They're saga films that come out in chapters. Ended up being none of these stories or characters went anywhere very satisfying. So it brings the whole thing down.

It got overpraised because people had been jaded by how joyless the prequels were and now were relieved to see something done in a similar spirit to the originals.

Then people realized it was just a remake of the 1977 movie, and that Rey, Finn et al weren't the same as Luke and Leia.

The funniest thing to me, as an original trilogy fan, is seeing prequel fans bashing the sequel trilogy. When I see this, I always tell prequel fans "now you know how we felt when the episodes I-III came out" haha.

This movie was hated right out of the gates. It was considered a ripoff of the first Star Wars movie with a Mary Sue instead of Luke Skywalker.

I never liked it that much but then I never wanted an episode 7, 8, and 9.
