I Knew It
I knew it would come down to Nicolas Cage on if I liked the movie or not. I'm not really a fan of his. The only movies I like of his are Con Air and The Rock. So when I saw his name in Longlegs' cast, I knew it was going to be a major red flag. And of course, I was right.
I also think that keeping him out of the marketing and leaving him a mystery for when we actually watch the movie hurt things as well. There was all this hype and mystery with the character, especially since nowadays everything is in the trailers/TV spots and marketing, but they kept him out to save something for the actual movie. Then throw in all these interviews were saying stuff like "this is going to be Nicolas Cage like you've never seen him before." Not just appearance wise (since they put all this makeup and stuff on him), but also acting wise. Plus early reviews were praising his performance and saying it was the best he has ever done. But then I watch the movie and it was like they told him to take what he did in Face/Off and double or triple the over-the-top factor for Longlegs. It was nothing really new or different. It's once again Nicolas Cage being Nicolas Cage.
When the movie returns to the opening scene of the movie, that's when I was like "This is just Nicolas Cage being his usual self. What's so different about this role than previous ones, especially anytime he is playing a villain or comic book/superhero character?"
And looking back at the marketing, I can see why they left him out. Not because there was something amazing waiting for us when we saw the actual movie. It was simply because he was barely in the movie. He maybe had like 5 minutes of screen time and most of it was in the interrogation scene.
Also, I'm very back-and-forth on his screen time and to the point where it sounds like I'm not making any sense or I don't know what I want. It would've been nice to see more of him, but after being disappointed that he was just being himself yet again, I also feel like he was in the movie enough.
But yeah. For me, this movie all came down to Nicolas Cage. I knew after watching the first trailer and seeing the cast that him being in the movie was going to be a major red flag. And it was. I didn't care for the movie. I'm glad I held back on being excited and stuff for the movie. I was still going to give it a chance, especially since I'm not a Robert Pattinson fan but I liked him in The Batman, but I held back on stuff. Oh, and some might think it's a good thing he doubled or tripled what he did in Face/Off for over-the-top factor. I don't. I'm not a fan of Face/Off. I think it's a pretty overrated movie. That's why I only listed Con Air and The Rock as my favorite Nicolas Cage movies.
