At 1:28:49, the view of the animal enters the frame from the right, as Reese starts running in the forest away from the potential rapist hunter. The creature is blurred in the background, but it can be seen turning its head with glowing eyes as it looks toward the camera. I'm guessing it's a type of fox or coyote. It's kinda freaky when watching the movie though!
When I first saw it, I thought it was the creepy guy that was talking to her and maybe he had night-vision goggles or something, but after watching it over, it honestly looked like a monkey sitting on a log. I'm still undecided as to what it was.
Yes, weird. I too thought it was one of the hunters sitting on a log, drinking something and watching her pass by. But looked at again after reading these comments and can't tell what it is.
btw, was there a symbolism to the fox in this movie? playing hide and seek with her in the wilderness .. what was the point of that .. or did it happen to the author in real life. Some people might say "it" was the mother watching over her.
I didn't pause it or anything, but in that short moment, it really kinda looked like a monkey. :D
But I think it is not really important what it was, but was rather to show, that Cheryl, at that point, was in no way afraid of the wild animals anymore like she was in the beginning but rather of the human beings, who, in this case were not that different from wild animals / predators. But she didn't spend one thought about possible dangerous real animals anymore. The wilderness was her natural Habitat at that Point if you will. ;) Remember shortly after that scene, when she arrives in Ashland and is having the reaction to not get too close to the guy who is talking to her, although he does not appear threatening at all.
Yeah, I froze the frame, but it was blurry. Confirmed that it looked like what it initially appeared to be, though, a bear. Do bears forage at night? I have no idea. It was definitely too tall to be a fox, given its height as she passed in front of it.
She didn't want to get too close to that guy in Ashland because the sales lady had just told her she stunk. ("All the makeup in the world is not going to help you if you don't do something about your personal hygiene.")
