Two films are certainly remarkably similar and you have listed some evidence to it. Now how about some differences as well:
- Olympus Has Fallen is a darker film. It has less humor, colors scale is literally darker and it has much more on-screen blood and guts. It takes itself seriously enough and although the whole film is fiction, it leaves the impression it *might* happen. White House Down is bit easier on the tone; it has more humor, more explosions, stunts and fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it follows the formula of a Bond film or Mission Impossible film.
- On that note, characters in Olympus Has Fallen are more greyscale, charismatic on it's own right, but characterized mostly through their job and position in Oval Office. They seam more like 'real' people. Even the villains are more realistic and even though they do have a leader, they are more of an amorphous mass, uniformed and compact. White House Down has more colorful characters, we know their quirks, good and bad sides and private matters. There are more character interactions. The villains are also more colorful and unique, each being recognizable among them.
- The relationship between the agent and US President in Olympus Has Fallen has been established from before; they are old friends and the agent has more personal investment in saving him. In White House Down, the agent and the President just met and their interaction is developing through the film. Also, the agent in OHF deliberately came to the White House after the attack to save the President, while the agent in WHD just happened to be there and went with the flow John McClane style.
- Also, big SPOILER:
- The villain in Olympus Has Fallen is revealed at the beginning and the tension is building on weather he succeeds in his plans and on who makes out of it alive. In White House Down, although mercenaries are present, the main villain is revealed at the end via twist.
I actually enjoyed both on different levels. They are quite complementary. Olympus Has Fallen is more of an action-thriller with elements of horror, while White House Down is more of an action film with elements of comedy, thriller and adventure. So, both work for me, depending on my mood. If I want something nail-biting, I'll pick Olympus, if I want more relaxed action, I'll pick WHD. Both are easily 8/10 for me.
