It saddens me how this is making more money than Inside Out...

Inside Out has finally come out in my country, and I saw it yesterday. It is, by far, one of the best animated films I have ever seen. I could not believe how deeply emotional and joyfully funny it was. A few days ago, I also saw Minions, and was left highly disappointed. I thought it was rarely funny and was just a lot of nonsense, and this is coming from a BIG fan of Despicable Me 1 and 2. Inside Out had a lot of meaning, whereas Minions was just 90 minutes of yellow things goofing around with slapstick and pop culture mixed into it.

Thinking about it though, I think it's very clear why Minions is making more money than Inside Out:

1. Minions is a prequel to two very successful kids films, and kids and adults are very familiar with them. Inside Out is an original idea, so people might not know what they are going into.
2. As I mentioned, Inside Out has a lot of emotion and meaning, and I have read a lot of reviews complaining it made the kids upset/bored. Minions is just a lighthearted comedy. Therefore the latter would probably connect more with the average child.

If you enjoyed Minions, then good for you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. However, I personally think that Inside Out is the superior film. What is your favourite out of the two and why?

reply

Don't be. Be happy that Inside out is extremely successful. Like you said, Minions is part of an established popular kids' franchise. Inside out is an original film, so to make over $600 million with nothing else to run on other than the fact that it's PIXAR is pretty damn good.

Box office does not always convey quality. I mean two of the Transformers movies made over a billion, and none of them made less than 700 million. Inside Out may be the superior film, but it's massive success did not beat the higher success from Minions, but both films being highly successful is great news for both (especially since Minions is about to be Illumination Entertainment's first billion dollar movie, which is pretty exciting for them).

Just because you are too stupid to understand it, it does not mean that it is a plot hole

I love them both. Minions and Inside Out are entirely different movies with entirely different goals, and both succeed brilliantly.
I favor Inside Out only because I felt it set higher goals than Minions, but who does not enjoy a good belly laugh? Kudos to both, and success to all!!!

You're not making money on it either way.

If people want lighthearted comedy, then there's nothing wrong with that.

This movie gives people what they want, and probably more importantly, they have marketed it successfully.

What makes more shouldn't matter to you, because it doesn't determine how good a movie is, just like fastfood isn't usually the best food, despite how much they make on it.

If Romanians would have made "Minions", we would have been banned from the UE...

Things are even more extreme in China, which is where I am. Inside Out came out only in October and barely anybody saw it, while Minions was a phenonmenon.

The biggest movie news website was so raged by this they released about 10 column articles for Inside Out consecutively, whilst they only do about 3 for other blockbusters like Ant-Man.

Everybody who actually went and saw IO loved it. I believe its esteem will grow with time. But since the DVD/Blu-ray market in China is close to being non-existent, I think it fair to predict that this movie is done in this market. Hopefully, it will gain reputation later and teach more people about movie quality, so they'll be more ready for Pixar next time.

Minions though nice looking has a very weak story, they really just put it on rails until it got to the end credits.

Inside out on the other hand needs a reasonably functioning brain to enjoy it.

I agree. Inside Out is brilliant - Minions isn't funny at all IMO and is just an hour and a half of Minions bumbling around speaking gibberish. Purely for small children, while Inside Out is a film anyone can enjoy.
