Philip and Elizabeth. Are you rooting for them, against them or

neutral ?

reply

Against. Probably some have forgotten that poor kid Philip shot at the Diner or restaurant for expediency's sake. I haven't.

reply

100% for them. Screw the FBI, the KGB is by far the coolest intelligence agency out there.

And the long term commitment of the Directorate S and its sleeper agents is just admirable.

reply

Against.

There's nothing likeable about either one of them.

reply

For Philip, against Liz.

reply

My "logical" side says root against them, hope they get caught soon, they are scum.

My "emotional" side likes them, as bad as they are, maybe because I still can remember Russell as "Felicity". I find myself hoping they don't get caught but at the same time aren't able to do anything that will harm the USA.

I am always firmly aware that it is a fictional TV series for entertainment, and realizing that the show would NOT have a very long run if they are caught and imprisoned quickly, would it?

It is an odd mix of feelings isn't it
Have NO idea how it will all end

reply

Consider that the FBI was aware of and kept their eyes on the real Russians in this saga for 10 years before they arrested them.

So 5+ seasons is relatively short

reply

From things I read about the 2010 case was that the illegals for the most part were pretty ineffective and therefore it was determined that it was more valuable to keep an eye on them and what they were doing than to arrest them.

It wasn't until some politically connected people who were targeted by the illegals began to cross the line and were doing things that could be considered in violation of national security.

The decision to arrest the illegals rather suddenly after all those years was more to save the politically connected individuals from their own stupid actions.

reply

Death or capture

I would say my memory is not what it used to be. But I don't remember what my memory used to be.

reply

Without a doubt I'm pulling for them. We know how the big picture ends so I'm sure Philip and Elizabeth will be caught and punished but that doesn't stop me from rooting for them.

Who would have thought?

reply

How can you watch the show and not pull for them? It's human nature.

reply

How can you watch the show and not pull for them?

Definitely for them. I remember just before the show premiered the writers and producers were saying that this is the exact response they were hoping for. They wanted the audience to be conflicted about their feelings. They wanted us to root for them in tense moments and then in the next moment wonder, "What the hell am I thinking? They're Russian spies!" I'd say mission accomplished. Pun intended. 

reply

Yup

reply

Yes, you are absolutely right. It's impossible not to rooting for them, at least by Phillip! He is the more "human", the sensible part in the couple.

reply

Rooting. Its a shame that they will lose. Socialism is superior to capitalism.

reply

Against them 100% Eventually they will have to suffer the consequences off all the lives they have destroy and evil *beep* that they have done.

reply

I concur.. The Soviet Union was much cooler than the US.

reply

Define "cooler" because few sane people would agree with you.

reply

Tell that to the millions of Ukrainians they starved to death in a few months. The Baltic women and children they packed into box cars and shipped to Siberia and the men they tossed against walls and shot and....

reply

Democratic socialism, yes, but that's not what they represent but a totalitarian state on the verge of collapse. The show has done a good job of showing why each side could legitimately fear the other and at least alluded to the scars of WWII on the Soviet psyche, but life in the USSR was grim for most people.

reply

Venezuelan "Democratic Socialism" shows otherwise.

Norway has the best standard of living in the world.

reply

Norway is quite an outlier when compared to most countries. It has a small population 5M+, yet it is sitting on a sea of oil and natural gas. About half of Norway's exports are oil and natural gas and those revenues are the main source for Norway's massive Sovereign Wealth Fund.

But Norway isn't a socialist country anyway. It is a capitalist country with generous safety net. It has a free market economy with low levels of regulation and corruption. I would have to do some research, but IIRC, the government owns the oil and gas fields and leases them to private companies for exploration and extraction. I think that one of the few areas where there is government ownership.

Most businesses are privately owned and there are low barriers to entry for businesses. Employees have generous benefits including unemployment benefits, but it is also relatively easy for employers to adjust their work force to meet market requirements.

People pay very high taxes and together with the sovereign wealth fund, the people enjoy generous benefits. The people do have a very high standard of living, but you have to include the effect of the rich natural resources that are currently augmenting that standard of living.

It's very hard to compare economic systems of very small counties with very large ones. It doesn't matter what economic system you use. There are just too many other factors in play to make the comparison illuminating.

"Totalitarianism" is a propaganda term made up in the 1950s as part of Cold War efforts to villify a geopolitical rival

It has no real definition and attempts by serious historians to understand USSR society reveal it to be empty and vapid (the concept of totalitarianism)

Soviet society was nowhere near what youve been led to think... MANY RUssians long for a return to it, there weer TRADEOFFS betwen then and now. Some things worse, SOME better

So yeah, that's how I feel anyways

reply

Tell that to the farmer's whose lives collapsed after Russia came in and collectivized the successful farms in the countries they invaded and took over after WWII.

reply

Only someone who has never lived under socialism would say that. No, Scandinavian capitalist nations with strong safety nets don't count. If you look at breadlines and say that they are superior, your IQ must be in the single digits.

I decided to try out the whole trolling thing everybody are talking about. Wasn't as fun as I expected.

I don't really mind if they're arrested/killed/sent home. As long they're together in the end.
