Well, I'm no film snob or authority on the art and science of movies, just a guy with an opinion like everyone else. And my opinion is that this movie was a piece of pretentious garbage that had nothing to say and ultimately went nowhere. It just came across to me as cheap, loud, and forgettable . . . the ultimate "look at me" exercise, with no idea how to tell a story or make me give a rat's ass how things turn out. I also love how Selena Gomez is initially painted as the group's conscience, until her character abruptly drops out of the film, never to be seen or heard from again. Interesting creative choice there.
The director, with whom I'm not familiar, seems quite in love with gimmicks and techniques. I saw lots of red filters, dramatic slow-mo's, and fractured time-shifts. Just because every color of crayon is in the box, doesn't mean you need to use them all. And James Franco's hysterical overacting, which commandeered the second half of the film (in place of any meaningful interaction between the female characters), was beyond embarrassing.
If you got anything worthwhile out of this train wreck, more power to you. But, to me, it was just a harsh reminder that investing an hour and a half or more of your life to give someone else a chance to entertain you is always a gamble. My rating: 4/10.

Granted it can be quite off-putting in nature but it is disregarded far too easily.

It's an old school style movie, in a new age setting. The girls are messed up in the head, the surroundings are dodgy, dingy, and there are crooks everywhere. The way this bit was played out, leading up to the finale reminded me in ways of old classics like Taxi Driver.
Obviously this is not a classic, but I think it is a nod to films like these. People saying it is boring, etc, are people who are expecting 90 minutes of tits bouncing around, or tons of action.
The one thing that disappointed me was the final shoot-out. I know it was obviously their vision/having the music playing during it. But it just wasn't visceral enough in my opinion. It was kind of ridiculous, surreal and over the top.
Otherwise, I thought it was a great film.
It was much better than I thought it would be. It had some very strong elements in it. The cinematography was amazing 10/10. The storyline and characters became likable through their loyalty and fearlessness. I also liked how the girls followed through in the end and came out on top. I dont mean in a feministic way, but it was a refreshing change in contrast to how women are usually portrayed in film.
I also thought the romanticizing of spring break throughout the film represented how youth really isn't that deep. That people are very much alike and want the same things when you come down to it.
I gave it a 5. Awful pacing and characterization; it takes the film almost an hour to finally pick up and tell a clear story because the first half were repetitive shots of teens drinking and acting like idiots. Yeah, I get what the theme is already, Mr. Korine. There was little to no subtlety whatsoever to its overall meaning so it struck as horribly pretentious with the way it thought it was so intelligent but really presented everything blatantly clear. I gotta say the cinematography/visuals was amazing, but that's the only real strength of the film. Everything else was awful thus the 5 (or whatever they say).
