True Coen bros fans, how does this rank among their films?

Is it them on top form? Or were you disappointed? I'm just curious.

It's my third favorite, after A Serious Man & The Big Lebowski. The only one of their films I haven't seen is The Man Who Wasn't There.

My feeling is that at this point in their career, the Coen's can't make a truly bad film (not the case for their entire career, contrary to some other suggestions in this thread). They now typically come up with a story with depth, and of course the filmmaking aspects (in respect to how it carries the story) from their mature crew ensemble is going to be excellent, probably true for any other film they make in the future. They're at a symbiotic plateau that now just make great things naturally.

Without mentioning other Coen brothers films, many of which do not reasonably stand up to comparison for many reasons, this one gets an 8/10 from me.

I will say though that it's hard for me to get worked up about the era folk-scene minutia that so many here are. Accurate or not -- and it certainly comes off as relatively authentic -- it's not what the film is about to me.

Of course, if it were glaringly non-representative, that would detract from the story. And I'm certainly glad that we got that well-done, early sixties treatment for the story to live in. It is wonderful to be immersed in such an experience, whether we got to live in those times or not (I was under 10, so remember little of the time).

Instead, it is about Llewyn and his struggles, regardless of Dylan or Grossman, but more compared to those around them and how he internalizes what he gets from them. And possibly about how in the end, he learns to put a little less weight into that (Jean is really the a-hole in this story).

And I suppose many of us can reflect that within us, we are sometimes near a turning point of doing something greater. Whether we do it or miss it is a thing of chance, or our own doing, is left to the viewer.

I think it’s top draw Coens, but they’ve made so many great films. I’d probably put it sixth or seventh.

Second best, after Fargo.

It was an interesting piece of work after boring A Serious Man and True Grit.

I think it's one of their best. Easily in my top 3. Probably my favorite behind No Country for Old Men and Big Lebowski.

It's not in my Top 5, but I'd put it at Number 6.
